MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was killed in a Midtown shooting Wednesday morning, sources told PIX11 News.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, sources said. Video posted to Citizen showed police tape on the Midtown street as police arrived at the scene.

He was rushed to an area hospital and later died. Thompson was in New York City for an investors meeting at a Hilton hotel, according to sources.

The shooting is being investigated as a possibly targeted hit, sources said.

Is this proven to be accurate, Monopoly money in the backpack?

I did see the link but otherwise I’m not seeing it in mainstream news yet.

If this is true—-wow. That is a real “screw you” message to LE.

Very dystopian. Makes me think of the “Joker” movie.

I don't know if I hope it's true and we can trust the reporting or if I hope it's not true and we can't trust the reporting.

This whole case feels like we're being punked.

Yup. NBC Nightly news reported on it.

In it, you see Thompson walking down the sidewalk, wearing a bright blue suit jacket, and dark pants. The gunman comes into view behind him, appearing to first strike the victim's left leg (he limps to the right, in the direction of the building).

He turns around and faces his attacker, before collapsing.
We don’t know if BT received a call/text or even a call from the front desk to stop by for a message that morning (could have been a written message delivered the night before/very early morning) maybe the message was to let him know someone was waiting for him? Or maybe a threat? I don’t know why it bothers me that BT looked back after he was shot in the leg, except to physically see who the shooter was, instead of looking at his leg. I’m probably overthinking this.

Heres msnbc

The New York Police Department says they did not find a gun inside the backpack they recovered in Central Park that potentially belonged to the person of interest in the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting. A jacket and Monopoly money were among some of the things found in the backpack.

Yes, Reuters reported it.

No word on the type of jacket (although IIRC it was reported elsewhere the jacket was Tommy Hilfiger), but my first thought was what if it is a fleece jacket that was in the bag? — i.e., UHC is fleecing the American public.

Putting Monopoly money in the bag was definitely a deliberate choice — I wouldn’t be surprised if the jacket was a deliberate choice as well.

I understand it’s a serious situation and someone died and it’s very sad and I feel horrible for his family.

That said… I literally laughed at the Monopoly money in the backpack. Imagine being a detective and being so excited that you found what you thought is the holy grail and you open it..and it’s full of Monopoly money.

Lots of high profile dissent and disapproval of UHC. (UnitedHealthcare CEO's slaying adds tragic twist to parent company's tumultuous year)

Between a software attack, protests, lawsuits, insider trading accusations and layoffs by one of its subsidiaries, Thompson's killing adds a tragic end to a troubled year for the company.

And--- medicare group leaving due to practices. And--DOJ lawsuit. Yipes. Seems like disgruntled folks could come from anywhere in the corporate structure dealings.
