Just riding around the country with a murder weapon on my person even though there was probably tons of places to get rid of it. Criminals can be really stupid.

I wonder if the suspect was wearing a mask at the McDonalds and it made him look suspicious?

In my experience, in 2024, wearing a medical mask is much more common in large coastal cities than it is in smaller interior towns.

John Miller on CNN:

An employee looks at this person in Mcdonalds and she believes he resembles the photos that have been put out. She calls 911. Police engage man and that's when they found all that stuff on him. One of the ID's matches the NJ drivers license name. Documents that seem to be relevant to this case. Would stop short of calling it a "manifesto." Carrying documents that may relate to motive.
Good for her! She's going to get a nice reward for being aware and making the call.

I’m shocked that he still has the weapon and everything else on him. Maybe he just didn’t care about being caught after the fact. Crazy!
He'll probably enjoy the hero worship he'll get from certain people.

Thinking the same. If it actually is a B&T, that's a $2,000+ gun. Unless its stolen or he has nothing to lose, he wasn't going to dump it.

Then he's an idiot. I'd gladly forfeit $2K to not go to prison for the rest of my life. JMO.

The man was in the McDonald’s at 407 East Plank Road in Altoona at about 9:15 a.m. today when another customer recognized him and called 911, a senior law enforcement official said

Law enforcement authorities have requested the passenger manifest of the Greyhound bus the man is thought to have taken to Altoona, to see if any names match any of the fake IDs that were being carried by the man detained in the McDonald’s, according to a senior law enforcement official.

The man arrived in Altoona on a Greyhound bus, a senior law enforcement official said. Brian Thompson’s killer is also believed to have taken a Greyhound when he arrived in New York City 10 days before the shooting.

The 26-year-old was picked up at a McDonald’s in Altoona after an employee thought he looked like the man in New York Police Department photos and called police, the sources said. Among his fake IDs is one NYPD believes was used by the killing suspect in New York.

The NYC perp was last seen entering GWB on Dec. 4, about 7:30 am.

Sort of hard to understand why 5 days later he is on a bus through central PA, only 270 miles from NYC.

If he had taken the one of the NJ buses that day, he could have been in Altuna by dinnertime. He could also have been on a plane to LA or Paris, or Toronto.

So where was he for 5 days, as the manhunt spread out?
If it is him (and so far, it sounds like it is), where was he headed? Home? Interior USA to put distance from NYC? To another target?

Fingers crossed they got him!

According to which ID, though?
They didn't say. But CNN also just said one of the IDs, when Altoona PD checked with NYPD, "seems to match" (words to that effect) the name on the fake one used at the hostel. Also just said again that ID "relates" to the NY fake one.

If they recovered a computer with him as reported, there will be a ton of info on there.

McD tipster will be eligible for the reward money, per CNN

John Miller more:

This could come together very quickly and solidly in regards to evidence. Can determine if gun matches in a relatively short period of time. "Smoking gun." They have DNA and fingerprints to connect him as well.

Applauding citizen involved here who had the care to make a comparison. Can imagine person looking at her phone and then looking at the suspect. This person would likely be eligible for the reward.

That's what the live updates on NYT say. I hope it's OK for me to paste here; I have a subscription.
An “elderly patron” of a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., provided the tip that led the authorities to hold the man for questioning, a senior law enforcement official said.
It's OK to paraphrase, not quote.

He planned to use it again. IMO.

Really dumb to keep the ID. Really dumb.

Good!
