I practice criminal law in the tri-state area, and extradition between states is routine. There is no basis to extradite someone to another state before charges are filed. My guess on why charges haven’t been filed yet? He was just identified this morning (LE did not know his name prior), and NYPD and prosecutors had to travel to Altoona to question him. I’d expect charges to be filed in the next day or so, though.
Welcome! I'd like to encourage you to be verified as an attorney because all of our verified attorneys give us great information in their posts.

I had a pinched nerve in my spine one time, and the pain was godawful. I was seriously contemplating suicide if it couldn't be ameliorated. Luckily it was.

Not making any excuses for him at all, but constant, chronic pain can really alter one's thinking, as other posters here have said.

Do you expect a domestic terrorist type charge if the manifesto is indeed directed toward UHC and leadership? Or, a first degree w/lying in wait, stalking? I guess gun charges? With what we do know for sure, what would you expect?

(article behind paywall) Luigi Mangione, 26, Arrested in Connection With UnitedHealthcare CEO's Killing in New York - WSJ

<snip> “A review of his reading diet suggested that, at some point, his ideas about activism had crossed into an interest in violence. In January he wrote a chilling review on the Goodreads book-review site of Theodore John Kaczynski’s “Industrial Society and Its Future,” also known as “The Unabomber Manifesto.” He gave it four stars.”

<snip>. “He was a violent individual—rightfully imprisoned—who maimed innocent people,” Mangione wrote. “While these actions tend to be characterized as those of a crazy luddite, however, they are more accurately seen as those of an extreme political revolutionary.”

I think there is no need to rush now. They can wait for DNA and fingerprints (now that they have his on file) and they can tie up any loose ends before charging him. They don't have to worry about him getting bail or being released until dec 23 so why not make sure you have an airtight case before charging?
I had that backwards, and deleted the posts.

I agree with the statements. We aren’t Russia. And Kaczynski isn’t a hero for the same reason this guy should not be.

People can affect change by voting, talking to others (politely) and working hard at things like helping others to become informed, donating money, helping others to vote and becoming personally involved in local politics.
This is why I think something was going on mentally. He's clearly an incredibly intelligent person; a very logical and thoughtful one. He has to know on that level, that murdering this man isn't going to affect any sort of change. Someone else will merely take his place in that company, and life will go on.

Insurance companies aren't suddenly going to say "you know, he's right. Maybe we should focus less on profits, and focus more on our customers and their health."

Everyone hates health insurance companies. That's nothing new. We all know someone who has been screwed over, if it hasn't happened to us personally [Raises Hand]. But his belief that this would accomplish his stated goal, is just absurd. I think a few years ago he'd agree with this.

Something happened and he underwent a dramatic shift, apparently isolating himself from friends and family, and directing his rage towards this company.

Maybe there will be change down the road, and people at creating that change he wanted. It won't be because he shot a father of two kids in cold blood though.

I think it’s the same guy but he looks very different in his jail cell photo vs the Manhattan pics where in every photo released he was wearing a hoody.

Out of curiosity, I’ve never been on a Greyhound bus, do they have WiFi?

no idea about the bus
I think he looks spot on to the taxi pics
however, the hostel pic looks different to me - I was actually expecting him to have light-coloured hair

Thank you! I’ll figure out how to get verified and do so.

Totally agree.

I imagine they are in a state of shock after not hearing from him for months and then this. I don't even know how I would react

He looks slender in the hostel photo to me. His nose looks more delicate and his jaw line not as defined and his chin ends in a point. Although it could be lighting and the angle of his face in the photo.

yeah I had this image in my brain (from that photo) that turned out to be nothing like how he really looks
except the wide smile

Why didn’t family or close friends identify him as a potential suspect from the photos?
I really don't think any of those 4 pictures gives enough of a view of what his actual face looks like for somebody that he knows to identify him. His actual face does not look like what I was expecting. It is clearly him just looking at certain parts, not to mention the ironclad evidence on him, but if that was my son I would not have been alarmed by those photos. Especially if I thought he was living in Hawaii and had not heard him with any anti-insurance rants.

Agreed 100%, and also from personal experience, serious physical injury for prolonged time can really affect one's mental health and so I can see this playing a part in LM's altered thinking.

I was fortunate to find Christopher Reeve's book, Still Me, which was a profile in courage and an inspiration to me because if Reeve was able to fight back and regain his life, despite becoming a quadrapalegic, I could also do the same with my much less serious injuries. As many have said about his book and his actions, he truly became Superman after his injury and his personal response to it.
