I truly think he was taken aback to have been stopped and wasn’t thinking clearly. He had been that Marc for a number of days and pulled it out by default imo. If he had a laptop I have to believe that he was aware of the story with the hostel, discovery of his use of fake ID and image of face.Did he in fact "hand-in" that same fake ID or did LE find it when searching his stuff? Either way I don't see the purpose of keeping that ID on you as it no longer serves a purpose other than tying you to a crime.
I really doubt his mother has UHC. The reason: They could afford the best policies available.@alcaprari23
A manifesto found online, with the subtitle, "Luigi Mangione's last words", mentions UnitedHealthcare 7 times, details his mother's physical ailments as well as his own. To be clear, this is not confirmed to be the manifesto found on him today at McDonald's. Here are excerpts:
"I authorize my own act of self-defense in response to a hostile entity making war on me and my family."
"These might be my last words. I don’t know when they will come for me. I will resist them at any cost. That’s why I smile through the pain."
"Each appointment was promised to be fully covered, until the insurance claims were delayed and denied. Allopathic medicine did nothing to help my mother’s suffering. Yet it is the foundation of our entire society."
"They promised coverage, and broke their word to my mother. With every delay, my anger surged. With every denial, I wanted to throw the doctor through the glass wall of their hospital waiting room. But it wasn’t them. It wasn’t the doctors, the receptionists, administrators, pharmacists, imaging technicians, or anyone we ever met. It was UnitedHealthcare."
"That’s where UnitedHealthcare went wrong. They violated their contract with my mother, with me, and tens of millions of other Americans. This threat to my own health, my family’s health, and the health of our country’s people requires me to respond with an act of war."

Because things sometimes go wrong in surgeries, particularly to the spine. IF a patient ends up on life support for decades. and insurance has not covered the procedure, the hospital could be left holding the bag and bankrupted due to the costs (magnified by any number of similar cases)I don't understand - why couldn't he just pay for it?
$60K actually. $50k thru FBI and $10 thru NYC Police ... I think.I think it should be split between the customer who advised the McD's worker to call the police. They worked together.
Very interesting. And what a tragedy for everybody involved. With his intellect andInteresting article.
Sounds like the typical American Dream immigrant story.
Great-grandfather who couldn’t read or write and then his son becomes a very wealthy land developer and owner of multiple high-end clubs as well as nursing homes, etc.
Philanthropic family and buildings named for them. Politician in the family.
How very different it would have been, had Luigi felt that health care was a corrupt industry (it is) but worked from within his family’s empire to improve things, rather than murder another man who presided over stingy health care insurance.

Very talented family. Agree with Arkay - what a positive difference Luigi might have made if he had worked within his family's empire to try to impact change in the health care industry.Interesting article.

Ironically, if he had his curly hair uncovered, wasn’t wearing a mask and gave law enforcement his legitimate ID, maybe they wouldn’t have arrested him.I truly think he was taken aback to have been stopped and wasn’t thinking clearly. I bet he had plans to toss it somewhere eventually and was caught off guard. Imagine he takes out his wallet and 4 ids are all sitting next to each other, he also can’t really flick through them in front of the officers.
To be honest though, I don’t think it matters. Had he shown his real ID or one of his other fake IDs, I think they would have found a way to search him. Their visual ID seemed to be strong confirmation of the NYPD suspect and they asked for back up to further that confirmation. The ID getting running as an obvious fake just helped speed up their ability to search and arrest him.
why does it imply that?
I'm Canadian so all this info re: U.S. insurance coverage is a bit confusing.
I'm thinking yes. Probably around the time LE asked if he'd been in NY recently. JMO!!!Did he pee his pants?
The care is multi-faceted. It needs approval from different entities. If you are a big time super billionaire you can make things happen and you have the power to get things done. If not, and your procedure is $200,000 and you want to self-pay with cash in the US, you still need to get past the liabilities involved with each person involved with that procedure. This takes time, and obviously you need the procedure asap. And additional costs, legal, for instance. Edit: people are infuriated that AI is involved with approving and denying life-saving and improved quality of life care claimsI don't understand - why couldn't he just pay for it?
I am inclined to think that manifesto is fake just like the video posted and taken down earlier today.Every 14 year old boy in America is drooling over that alleged manifesto. "This is why I smile through the pain". I hope he didn't write it, because it's rather pathetic for an Ivy Leaguer.
Ironic if he uses a parent's pain to justify murder but is estranged from the parent and making them worry about him.
Also is he imagining his financial need? His parents own two country clubs.
Why didn’t family or close friends identify him as a potential suspect from the photos?I’m sure they’ll be in touch with him really soon, and they’ll figure it out.
No way this guy doesn’t wind up with a private attorney. This family has money, and someone would want this case to make a name for themselves regardless.
Agree - so much heart break for all of the people and families connected with this tragedy.Too many heart broken families on all sides….
CNN showed a new mugshot of him in a vest
Yeah, Luigi, because Kaczynski sure changed the system by murdering people.
