And apparently LM's mother didn't recognize her son from his picture being on aired on the news everyday for the past week????

Sounds to me like LE had no idea who their suspect was until they were called to McDonalds. If they had, they would have contacted mom and the SFPD.

Iirc the pics came out Saturday night. The family appeared to think he was in California.

Oh don't get me wrong - if we're right about his motivations I understand them, I just can't get my head around why someone like him, in his position and with all the privilege he has in life, would opt for the nuclear option as a first move? It's insane. If he were a 60 year old who'd worked 12 hour days for 40 years ending up with some chronic industrial disease that he can't get treatment for living in a trailer park with no funds then I could sort of see the angle there.

I get it that the people at the bottom are getting no where because it's extremely difficult to fight enormous vested interests. People like him, though, might stand a chance of actually getting somewhere. I just don't understand why someone who's intelligent and well educated could arrive at the decision that shooting someone in the back is the morally right thing to do or that it would actually change anything.

If he'd decided to run for office or start a political campaign specifically for the purpose of changing American healthcare he might have got somewhere. I've heard it said that UH covers somewhere in the region of 50,000,000 people - that's a lot of voters and from what I've read a huge number of those really don't like that company! As it is he won't change anything now. You can't use violence to address every problem because just doesn't work for most things. If MLK had decided against peaceful protests and mobilising support and legal cases and shooting white state governors instead do we think that the cause of African Americans would have benefitted?

Sorry, I'm rambling somewhat but I just fail to see why today it seems that extreme violence seems to be a first option rather than a last resort in so many things in life. It seems to be especially the case in the US, it has to be said.

From the limited information available online and in the news media, he had serious, chronic damage to his spine. That condition alone is probably going to severely limit his activities for the rest of his life. He probably didn't have a future in politics or activism. If his claims for rehab therapy or pain management were denied by his insurance provider, he'll have terrible pain to face.

We'll probably find out how much other factors played in pushing him towards murder, but yes, other alternative kinds of activism would have been better. JMO, depression may have played a role in his decision. I've worked with many cancer patients facing financial disaster due to limited or no health care. It's a double whammy to deal with a diagnosis and treatment, while adding financial failure. Many refuse treatment and die, even when they could have survived.

I don't know what FEP is, but I guess he was bus hopping.

In 1963, our family took a Greyhound bus trip from San Francisco to New Mexico to Florida to Wisconsin to Seattle. Four kids and one was in diapers. It wasn't very fun. (What were they thinking??? Our previous trip had been via train). Anyway, it can be done.....

wow... that sounds amazing to me. Not fun, but amazing. This included both parents??? Assuming one parent had to work, and in 1963, assume that to be Dad. How was he able to take that much time off?

'how long WAS that trip. I cannot imaging---being confined with my parents for any length of time. geez.

I get that he might have back problems but I don't see how that would affect him as a politician or activist at all. Indeed, being able to say that he's one of the people being trodden on just strengthens his case, imv.

Lots of people have done those things whilst being far more crippled than him - Chris Reeve immediately comes to mind.

Also, I'm not at all convinced that whatever injury he has is much of a challenge to him given the videos we've seen of him.

I really doubt the family had any hint. They thought he was 3000 miles away.
I know, I was thinking the same thing, even though he was missing (or unreachable) who would think he'd be across the country? especially if you dont believe he'd be capable of doing something like this.

Please forgive if I'm posting out-of-turn here, as I haven't read the thread for a few hours and so am likely behind about 2,000 posts...

However, regarding "cutting ties and dropping out of society": Withdrawal from people/social life is often a consequence of chronic pain. In fact, it's quite common.

Don't know if it has anything to do with LM, but just responding to this post.

I definitely agree with your sentiment here. I have severe back pain. I ended up with additional horrendous nerve damage after i received a spinal injection from my pain management doc.
Couldn't stand, couldn't walk, couldn't DO anything.

One of the side effects of severe back pain, and nerve damage.......... is that others just don't understand just how severe and debilitating it can be.

backing off from socializing ---BECAUSE of the pain,
backing off even more when people just DO NOT UNDERSTAND the pain.
I feel like I became a hermit for about 5 months--

Exactly. There are elected officials who are in wheelchairs, missing limbs, etc. I fail to see how back pain would prevent someone from a political career.

His extended family is HUGE, and extremely prominent in social circles. His picture was clear as day. I find it hard to believe not one family member, or other person, didn't recognize him.

In fact, I'd opine that someone did, and likely notified LE, but he was on the run, and they couldn't find him, until the ID at McD's.

Who knows? I'm 4000 KM away from New York, and I saw his picture. Maybe they don't watch the News? ;)
But now that you mention it, I remember hearing something that made me wonder if they were contacted,. Did they have any DNA from anything? could he have been ID'd through FGG?

I think so too. It's simply unbelievable to me that no one who knew him recognised him. The police will likely have had his name within minutes of the unmasked pic coming out.

He was clearly no novice with firearms so I wouldn't be at all surprised that if he regularly shot with people some might have an inkling from the mannerisms in the shooting video.

This is a big question for me as well....
The one picture--the supposed flirting smiling picture--- was SOOO clear.

So, sifting through the media coverage - including (especially?) the wonderful efforts from ppl posting in this thread...

It seems like something happened with this guy in mid-November that caused alarm with his own family and was part of the spiral that led to him allegedly shooting Brian Thompson.

His mom reports him missing to the San Francisco Police Dept. on November 18: Luigi Mangione reported missing to SFPD weeks before shooting

The details surrounding this are still unknown but clearly she had a reason to do this.

We also know he's alleged to have arrived in NYC on November 24 (6 days later) on a bus that originated from Atlanta.

The fact his Mom reported him missing from SF on Nov. 18 doesn't mean that's the day he actually disappeared. But there is clearly something going on in his life at this point that made his own mother believe he was in total crisis mode - and that crisis appears to have resulted in the alleged narrative that started up in NYC on Nov. 24.
It seems like he had basically been out of contact all year. My guess is that she reported him missing on Nov 18 because maybe they were waiting for Thanksgiving, like if he doesn’t contact or surface for Thanksgiving than something is really wrong.

They knew he wasn’t in Hawaii because the friend who appeared on the news who ran the co-living space also didn’t know where he was. His last address was in SF, probably where his previous employer was.

IMO, I think basically the timing of the missing persons report and the shooting was a total coincidence of timing, I don’t think they influenced each other. Like others predicted earlier, the family started to really wonder where he was since Thanksgiving approached and he was still out of contact and not at home. The annual conference just happened to be the week after.

Right and certainly some of these family members got together for Thanksgiving around the 28th, and that's when everyone would be talking about or whispering about cousin Luigi, who was MIA.

His mother reported his as a missing person on November 18th in San Francisco - certainly before that she would have reached out to siblings, parents, nephews, cousins etc. to see if anyone knew his whereabouts before taking a measure such as contacting CA LE, to file the missing person report.
