NYPD police commissioner says the gun is a match.
Video of the killing - check
Picture of him with mask down at the hostel - check
Fingerprints match the water bottle the killer drank from - check
He was caught at McDonald's with a manifesto and notebook outlining the killings - check
Gun in his possession matches the gun used in the killing - check
EDITED TO ADD WHAT OTHERS HAVE KINDLY POINTED OUT:
Had in his possession and was actively using the same ID from the hostel - check

MOO, but I think he's made it pretty easy on the Prosecutors of this case.

I wonder why he kept the gun. He doesn't seem to have had much thought into evading capture long-term, given he left his DNA and fingerprints scattered around the scene, and continued to mask rather than change his appearance some other way.

Did NYPD disclose how they tracked him back to the hostel where he made another mistake by showing his full face on camera?

...

There is a difference between motive and a defense. We like to look at motives here on WS because there are multi-facets to a crime. We wonder and ponder. Why did this person do this? What happened> True crime is also human interest. Motives are generally are not defenses to murder. (In some cases they may be, but not this case)
Good point ^^^ (BBM)

My mind keeps going back to him keeping the gun he used. Why would he do that? There had to be a reason. I'd have thought he'd have gotten rid of it in a way he figured it couldn't be found, yet he kept it.

I keep wondering if he was considering suicide on his own, or suicide by cops. Was he considering a shootout with LE to go down in a blaze of gunfire? If so, it appears he didn't even go for the gun when LE approached him or we'd have heard about that. So was it suicide? Or something as simple as protection?

Maybe wanted to keep it as it was important in a sentimental way ?
I know, it's repulsive to speak of a murderer that way.

I’ve noticed the photo several times, which initially promoted me to wonder if I should have my vision checked. But no, regardless of the media source each time I can’t unsee how his front teeth oddly stand out. It’s as if he has a six teeth fake overlay that doesn’t match the rest of his teeth because they’re too high. What’s with that?

My best guess is he had his front teeth knocked out and is in the process of getting implants and meanwhile is miswearing a dental bridge?

Interesting.......

That is alot of teeth for a healthy young man... Also, this pic is probably several years old. So, if he is still in the process, it sure it taking a long time. This pic isn't his mug shot.

I lost a front tooth and my temporary bridge did not look like this...

It may just be his natural teeth...

On the thought that LM was inspired by his brother:

"His actions are like a virus," David Kaczynski said in a phone interview. "They could be like a virus unless they understand he was a very angry and disturbed man.

"To the extent that he may have attributed at all to sort of normalizing or recasting the violent acts as beneficial to humanity is a terrible mistake," David Kaczynski added.

David Kaczynski said he understands that people, to this day, still may look at his brother's writings and find connection with his belief that rapid technological advancement is eroding human freedom. But violence, he added, cannot accompany change.

"Just like acts of love can send out waves of benefit to other people, to humanity at-large in ways we can see and ways we can't see," David Kaczynski said, "acts of violence do the same thing, albeit in a very negative manner. It really gives me a great deal of personal pain to think my brother's actions have in any way contributed to influencing a man like this to kill an innocent human being."

1/3 of me says he was careless
1/3 of me thinks he planned to kill again
1/3 of me thinks he kept it for suicide by cop, he was not expecting to be found by police munching on a hash brown with the gun in his bag

Am thinking the latter option

I think he will be kept in solitary confinement

1) Many prisoners have kids and will be angry at the thought of 2 kids being left without a dad, they have made bad life choices ending up in jail but protective of their kids

2) He is a national celeb now, one of most high profile prisoners in the country, that makes a very big target on his back for a prisoner after a bit of fame/notoriety

He gets a jail sentence he will not mix with the other prisoners imho
This was discussed on CNN last night - The Laura Coates Show. He would not fare well in a NY state prison in general population. He would be better off in a Federal prison which have a somewhat better track record of maintaining safety of inmates.

I get the feeling that LM is more akin to an angry incel like Elliot Rodger than Ted Kaczynski. He just happened to pick a target that a lot of folks feel animosity towards, which is the only thing making him popular versus someone like the sheriff that shot the judge in Kentucky. In fact, I’m pretty sure a lot of the folks rooting for LM were aghast at a sitting sheriff shooting a judge - even though the situations aren’t all that different when it comes down to brass tacks. Feel morally outraged? Kill the person! Public support of the victim should apparently determine justifiableness, according to some.

Won’t be too long until that concept transforms into people on the “good side” getting killed by vigilantes over perceived moral wrongdoings.

JMO
You know, I was thinking the same yesterday, i.e. the incel connection which is the motive for several crimes.

FOX 5 NY has exclusively learned that police say the person was walking near East 81st and 85th Street when they saw the bag, noticing writing on it that mirrors markings found on shell casings in Midtown the morning of Thompson’s shooting.

I am puzzled as to why he would keep the gun but discard the bullets - unless he kept just one for himself in the barrel? MOO

Probably a dumb question, but if someone requests a public defender, do they have to pay them?
No. As long as they qualify for a free attorney.

dated 12/8....says not finger printed yet on it too...maybe old info?
It was his intitial booking. I'm sure they've printed him now and have filed paperwork to get dna.

The fact that LM stayed in the northeast and made no attempt to disguise himself still baffles me. 5 days - take the bus to Little Rock, Omaha or Des Moines. Get a job using your real identity for a while, lay low and reinsert yourself into society. Massive blunder to stay in the NE still wearing the same mask etc. Would love to know if he had seen the released pictures of himselWonder if he had f from CCTV around NYC.
Well-said. Cannot fathom that he might not have had a plan after leaving NYC.

And you know of course what will happen next: letters from adoring female fans will be pouring from all over the country. Pity that this incel will not be able to profit from them, as I don't think they'll let him come out again.

This may not matter, but they are a little misleading, Those mountains are nowhere near his apartment; he lived in Surf Break first, which is above the Ala Moana shopping centre near Waikiki, and the apartment he moved to is a few blocks away, and no mountains there either.
So misleading. I'm sure they have sweeping views, but it's moving closer to downtown Honolulu. It's not as glamorous as they're making it sound, why do that, tho?

Plus, I thought the article said he was renting this apartment. It's a cash flow proposition, not so much inheritance.
