Possibly for reasons in regards to motive ?
Anyone else want to chime in ?

Eta : Was already answered.
Omo.
Police may be looking at the insurance to see if LM contacted his vitcim direct or even met him.

That was entertaining, in a twisted kind of way.
I predict LM will not do well in prison, unless he's able to get into a federal prison. Can you imagine going from living in Hawaii to a cold, nasty, concrete jail cell in PA or NY in the dead of winter? He will need to be on suicide watch, IMHO.
He's quickly becoming the folk hero behind the prison walls and outside, isn't he?

If I were Brian Thompson's family I would start a media blitz. He needs a face, his life story, the loss to his loved ones and friends, his impact he's had on others lives. Right now he's not personal to people. Luigi is. They need to show up at his next court appearance. I bet Luigi's family will be there.

The best motive in the world is not stopping him from doing 30 to life ...imo
Nor should it. You do the crime, you do the time. You cannot buy your way out of prison. MOO

I just typed this into Google SE

motive for murder: pain

Every. single. link on the first page referenced Luigi. I didn't reference him in the least.

The media is handing him the best motive/plea possible, and on a silver platter.

[edited for typos]
I so agree with you: the media is indeed handing him a motive on a silver platter. It is revolting

I see. So you are saying that it was NOT a toss up, as though "he couldn't decide". That he would not have hurt innocent people by using a bomb. Good. I thought for a minute you believed it was a "toss up" in his mind. Its amazing how words can be so misconstrued. And thanks for your clarification and setting the record straight. Whew.
But he did hurt innocent people. He assassinated a father of two sons, a husband, a brother, a friend, a colleague, and he hurt his sister, his parents, his uncles and aunts, his cousins, and the memory of his grandparents who achieved much in their lifetime and gave back to their community. And he hurt civilized society - the vast majority of Americans who believe in legal recourse to settle our differences, not vigilantes who take the law into our own hands.

He's a murderer who will now spend the rest of his life in prison as justice for Brian Thompson.

Thank you- the family of Mr Thompson needs to speak out-- sadly he is not only forgotten in all of this hoo-ha about the murderer-- people diagnosing the murderer-- - people excusing him because perhaps he had on-going pain (and that may not even be true)---people making this murderer a hero--- I hope the family of Mr. Thompson speaks out soon- it must be so horribly painful for his family- I will say this again and again: social media is toxic!!

There is the possibility of a rapid mental decline, specifically during that several month period where he dropped off the map. Friends were looking for him. Family was looking for him. He was a ghost.

The back pain offers a possibility of an explanation in that regard, which is why law enfacement sources have said they are looking at that as being somehow related.

Was he angry due to pain and/or the process (health insurance)?

Did the pain cause some sort of mental change?

Is there some other explanation for how a seemingly intelligent, well adjusted man with no criminal record, much less a history of violence, decided to blow away a father of two in broad daylight?

Fortunately, I think there are enough pieces there that law enforcement should be able to put together a picture. I'm very curious myself, as this is not a trajectory I've ever seen before in all the years I've followed murder cases.
Always appreciate your insights, Mass Guy. Agree that LM's pain may have caused some mental changes. The median age of onset for mental illness is 25-27 years old. It's quite possible that chronic pain, problems sleeping and significant stress related to his physical health -- e.g. his back issues and Lyme Disease -- could have triggered the onset of a mental illness. Behavioral changes and distorted thinking can be associated with mental illnesses.

Robin Hood of the digital age. He cannot be made into a folk hero.

I hope the Judge makes an early decision that motive is excluded.

I think that as soon as motive is mentioned, the defence will put the insurance industry on trial.
The rules of evidence would govern what evidence would be allowed to be presented at trial (and what the jury is permitted to consider in their deliberations).

The Pretty Boy Floyd of the 21st Century. His cause was/is worthy, but he took it too far when he resorted to murder. MOO

I am a lefty, learned to write in the mid-late-60s in a progressive school district and was never pressured or forced to use my right hand, at school or at home.

A family story about my lefty grandfather who would have been learning to write in about 1905 was a different story, no surprise there.

However, several years ago I dated a left-handed man who learned to write around 1960 and who *was* physically restrained, at least for a while. And that was in San Francisco! I was very surprised to learn kids were still being restricted at that late date, especially in such a progressive community.

So yes, it is possible. And of course at home, pressure might *still* be applied in some families.

I think it's important to remember, in this case, that LM's comment about his mom forcing him to use his right hand wasn't especially recent and doesn't even sound like a serious complaint in my view; but was mentioned by him in a book review (? I think I recall?) years ago.

Personally, as awkward as it may be, especially at a large gathering with many people seated close together, to accommodate someone who is a lefty (there is a tendency to bump elbows with the person next to you, especially while cutting food with a knife which forces the elbow out), I would still rather accommodate that person by letting them sit at the end of the table, rather than have them flailing about with little control over their 'wrong' hand while wielding a sharp steak knife! MOO
As a 71-year-old lefty who has battled my entire life with scissors that are "backward" and constantly jockeying for the end of tables, I sometimes wish my mother had tried to pressure me to be right-handed. Having said that I have never used that as an excuse to murder anyone. LoL

I am completely oversimplifying this need for causation, I get that we wring our hands in the hopes that we can understand. But to quote Chris Rock: “Whatever happened to crazy? What, you can't be crazy no more? Should we eliminate crazy from the dictionary?”
I think may people have opined that he got to the point of killing bc "mental illness" which is just another way of saying "crazy".

IMO he is likely not your garden variety crazy ( that's most of us here loi) but he likely has serious mental illness with real codes and descriptions in the DSM. Just my thought.

Lots of our comments are obvi just chatter and speculation - just all posters trying to make sense of things based on our own experiences /personal biases.
We really have very few puzzle pieces to put together for Luigi.
He went to an ivy league school, he was "elite" and his grandfather a developer etc.
To most of that I personally say with my own biases - So what. None of that is key to why this happened.
I know many people or "elites' who went to ivy league schools, go to prep and ivy league schools and even speciffically Penn in my own family - none are killers nor are they activists. I have two real estate developers in my extended family and I also work in a field directly related. we are not activists or killers.
I know we are grasping onto anything to try and explain this tragedy. Patience - it will come

He is clearly very bright but oh so young and not so emotionally intelligent. This age group overall to me reads soo young emotionally. Maybe just a reflection of the times we find ourselves in. Its hard to be taught right and wrong and ethics at home, only to go out into the world and see all the injustice and yes corruption, double standards etc.

Deciding how to navigate that atmosphere while not losing my own personal ethics and identity and reamining a decent person, has been a life long challenge for me in the corporate world. A very delicate balance. You certainly dont get rewarded for doing the right thing ethically IME - you get rewarded for $$$value generation to fuel the stock, no matter how you achieve it. The old -Do what you have to do to achieve goals, just don't get caught - was very prevalent.
Just my experience and all my opinion and ramblings

I'm very curious about him leaving his job at TrueCar in 2023. Are there any details about that? Was it the same time as his back injury? Was he fired, did he quit, layoff, etc? Whatever those circumstances, it could have contributed to his downfall.

I wonder if ML was trying to apply for disability and that he didn’t meet the guidelines.

"Effective Altruism."

@Parsnip Thx, but credit should go to @waldojabba (TYVM :) ).

JW's post about EA preceded mine noting Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX infamy as an example of someone who advocates EA but is actually just virtue signaling.

LM is also from similar background imo but seems oblivious to his privileged origin & circumstances. jmo
To me a representation of Effective Altruism (EA )might be Melinda Gates. Not the phony grifters IMO

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed> Due to the nature of this case--BT gunned down in front of a hotel in midtown, BT being the CEO of UHC, photos of LM distributed & the health care struggles that most Americans have or have known others to have and the rage many have about the US health care system--this case was already garnering tons of attention.

We were already in shock that BT was murdered and then we were totally in sshock and incredulous that a person like LM was arrested. Many of us are struggling to figure out how LM could have gone from his positive and well-regarded life to becoming a murderer. Many of us are trying to figure out how this radical change in LM could have happened since LM is very bright, highly educated at an Ivy League school (U Penn), athletic, strong leader, well-liked, and came from a well-regarded and affluent family.

At least, this is what I'm finding so hard to wrap my head around. What on earth happened to LM? Clearly some major things happened in LM's life that caused some major personality and behavioral changes, and led him to this point. I wonder whether his back issues, Lyme disease and other major life events (including perhaps being laid off) brought about the onset of a mental illness.

JMO

Agreed.

A person can be crazy (at varying levels !) but still evil, cunning, and able to formulate a plan and see it through ?
LM's escape and pathetic attempts to cover his tracks shows he is fully capable of premeditation, and knows what he was doing was wrong.
Omo.
Or, a person can be crazy and mentally ill and still be able to formulate a plan to do evil things, but not necessarily be evil himself. JMO

One of the earlier posts here said they laid off 24% of the workforce at once, then went out of business. 2023

Wild, befitting of a circus, not surprisingly. Was curious of conditions/rights incarcerated in Commonwealth.
First, after booking, did he place any calls? Contact lawyer himself or reconcile family? (Calls to attorneys protected, all else recorded and potential incrimination)?
Perused menu next two weeks, the three ‘hots’ don’t seem so bad, depending on chef and quality of ingredients though, admittedly, atmosphere and presentation lacking.
The ‘cot’ portion, scoring a single is a vast improvement over a shared hostel room or contoured into a bus seat but that good fortune tempered no doubt by the realization that this 6’x8’ (perhaps 8’x10’?) with a 24/7 Epstein watch is as good as it ever is gonna get and a galaxy away from the ocean view Honolulu penthouse with refreshing tradewinds.

Visitors allowed, will he remain a recluse? Access to any media or able to research his defense? Ironically, reading a lotta books and writing letters—like we all used to do back in the day—seems to be the extent for this—no doubt, brilliant and engaging—self-proclaimed 21st century pioneering thinker with clipped wings. Exercise yard, and importantly and also sadly ironic, the quality of medical care, orthopedic and mental?
One thing seems to be certain, however, as verified by Ashley’s expert guest on the clip, Gene Borrello, ex-Mafia tuff turned turncoat bearing a strong resemblance to the accused assassin.
Once extradited to Rikers, during lengthy trial and sharing an address with PDiddy and SamBFried, the ex-wonderrichboy will be paying—a boatload—for protection.
This aint Grandaddy’s country club with polite society.
I am guessing that his family arranged for an attorney for him as soon as they heard that he had been arrested in Altoona. His current attorney from Altoona says he first met with LM at the courthouse the morning of his court appearance, just after the outburst from LM in front of the media when he arrived at the courthouse.

It's possible he told his attorney that he doesn't want any visits from his family at this time, and I am guessing that the attorney is acting as middle man between LM and his family, conveying messages back and forth, and of course only disclosing to the family what LM authorizes him to disclose.

I think his family will be helping him behind the scenes in whatever way they can and at some point they will visit him in person, whether in PA or in New York.
