I was wondering if there will be a "manifesto" found also... just seems like this person, IF their motive was to honor a family member or attack the "system" would want to get credit for his actions so he had to have told at least someone about his plan, his thoughts to do it, or something!

According to WaPo, UnitedHealthcare announced the investor meeting would take place on Dec. 4 at 8am in NYC, but did not disclose the exact location. So it seems like the gunman must have had an inside source — an attendee, hotel staff, someone within the company?

Police are running forensics on the discarded phone found in the alley/pedestrian plaza, so hopefully they will be able to track down whoever he was talking to.

I think there are several possibilities for motive but I am not subscribing to any of them at this time because AFAIK,

wait for it

here it is

no evidence of motive whatsoever from LE has been presented. None, zip, nada, zero.

When any such evidence is revealed by the skilled investigators I know are working on the case--by that I mean NYPD--I'll rethink.

I’ve been watching Anderson Cooper and his guests— John Miller, Andrew McCabe and Geraldo Rivera.

Both John Miller and Andrew McCabe (former FBI chief) think the murderer was definitely well-trained and well-informed. They know he made mistakes, though, as in dropping the water bottle and power bar wrappers from Starbucks in the escape alley.

Geraldo is focused more on the insider trading that netted the victim $15,000,000, and he seems to believe it might be an angry stockholder who lost money due to this.

I vacillate between motives. Could be any angry person, whether a stockholder or a patient whose claim was denied, or who has a family member whose claim was denied.

I also vacillate between whether the shooter is the person with motive, or instead was hired by the person with motive.

IMO I don’t think this has anything to do with domestic life and marital issues.

I wrote several pages back that I thought I could detect the killer’s ethnicity. I didn’t want to state it specifically but to my eyes the man looks Russian, or from another part of the former USSR.
I see that now a lot of posters have said the same, so I feel okay to state that now.

There are many communities in South Brooklyn that have become overwhelmingly Russian or from affiliated former Soviet nations.

If indeed the killer is from this ethnic background, he could have come right over from Brooklyn. Not necessary to fly in from Eastern Europe. There is a Russian Mafia presence tucked in among all the others who have come here to NYC to have a free life.

I know this for a fact, as I have taught thousands of children from this background and I’ve had parent/teacher conferences with some fathers who boast about it.

JMO.

Two points. About insider trading - if there was an investigation, BT was not only the subject of it. He could also be the potential source of information about other people involved. I see many interested people, not only disgruntled stockholders but someone else. Insider treading often involves a web of connections; someone wanted to conceal own involvement, perhaps?

But it is equally possible that the roots of the case lie in Minnesota and not something recent. According to this article, BT used to work for PwC. The situation might be far more complex. One can find an executor in NYC, but who knows where the roots are?

I’ve already seen a hundred people on social media today who blame United for the death of their loved ones. The average industry claim denial rate is 16%. United’s is TWICE that at 32%. All day long I’ve read families who say their kid or parents were denied cancer treatment by an AI analysis of the claim, and because the appeal process took so long, by the time they prevailed, it was too late and the cancer had spread too far. Or the people who were taken to an ER in network but all the doctors there were out of network and they ended up in bankruptcy. Not to mention that United’s Optum stopped paying out doctors offices during the months long hack, and then the doctors went bankrupt because they couldn’t pay rent or staff, United came in and bought private practices for pennies on the dollar. Or the insider training being investigated by the DOJ allegedly done by the victim and his colleagues to the tunes of 100s of millions of dollars.

This isn’t me victim blaming - but under the circumstances I’d be much more surprised if this *wasn't* related to his job in some way, especially since doing it on the way to the annual shareholder meeting sounds a lot like trying to send a message.

Oh for sure, I’ve seen those too and people are definitely rightfully angry. 32% denial is outrageous. I guess I was thinking of it more from just a psychological perspective of like, insurance companies have unfortunately been a racket for YEARS (/forever) and it was only in 2024 that someone decided to take out a CEO of one? (I’m genuinely asking, I don’t know if there’s ever been violence against health insurers specifically. I know politicians and other corporations of course).

I guess I could go either way at this point as to motive until we know more.

But where’s the manifesto? Most fundamentalists willing to murder are prepared to take themselves out, all in the name of the cause. Maybe evidence of this will surface later, but it would appear that our shooter wants to live and remain anonymous.
Well to be fair the Unabomber wanted to live recluse and anonymous, but you’re right he still did send his manifesto letters to the media. so it’s curious we haven’t seen anything like that yet.

While New York law enforcement continued their manhunt, Thompson’s community reeled from the news.
The block where the family has lived for seven years was subdued Wednesday morning. One neighbor said Thompson was “very quiet”.

Several Minnetonka police cars camped outside the campus, and the department appeared to position a security tower to monitor the headquarters. A spokesperson for the Minnetonka police department said it’s proactively stepping up patrols in the area of UnitedHealthcare’s campus and has been in touch with the company’s security team.

The Minnetonka police department spokesperson was not aware of any specific threats targeting the campus.

Police records show there have been many calls from company headquarters since January 2021, but a substantial number of those were 911 hang-ups.

As CEO, Thompson led a firm that provides health coverage to more than 49 million Americans — more than the population of Spain. United is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans, the privately run versions of the U.S. government’s Medicare program for people age 65 and older. The company also sells individual insurance and administers health-insurance coverage for thousands of employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs.

The business run by Thompson brought in $281 billion in revenue last year, making it the largest subsidiary of the Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group. His $10.2 million annual pay package, including salary, bonus and stock options awards, made him one of the company’s highest-paid executives.

SBM

I suppose it’s possible that out of many, many, many individuals or families that have been utterly destroyed by insurance denials, this time someone unbalanced was willing to commit murder where others wouldn’t.

In the sense that it has indeed been a racket forever, but this person didn’t pay attention to it until it struck down his own family and a rage was born.

Just speculating. I’ve no idea.

I’m sure there are plenty of tall and thin people who feel that United Healthcare unfairly denies claims and rips people off. It appears that at least one such person was at the above linked protest and can be seen standing to the left of the girl with the megaphone

Jmo

the suspect doesn't look that tall to me
also, the suspect seems younger JMO

Shooting him in the back does feel like a youthful lack of confidence. Don’t we usually hear about two quick shots to the head in contract killings? He seized the moment because he couldn’t get closer to his target. You’d think a seasoned professional would be mindful of cameras.
