MIDTOWN (WABC) -- A search warrant is being sought in connection with the suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Police now appear to be closing in on the identity of the shooter, sources told ABC News
Why would they release this information and tip him off about the search warrant?

Police have searched a hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where they believe the suspect may have been staying.

Further details of what the search turned up were not immediately clear.

Very interesting. I know where one is, though I'm sure there are more than the one I know. At any rate, there are likely other guests at the hostel who can provide more info about the suspect - and that is good!

Because they are confident in their investigation?

Maybe they also know he's gone from that location by now?

idk

ETA: And/or, the info can put pressure on the suspect, which can lead to him making mistakes. It would be stressful to know the NYPD is hot on your trail. jmo

This would be a source close to the investigation, and not investigators themselves. This wouldn't be authorized for release, but big city police departments tend to leak like a sieve. Good for our purposes though.

especially since he was wearing such a high end backpack! And since we know it had a gun and some personalized ammo in it, he was probably sleeping with it tightly clutched in his arms.

Yeah, he doesn't look like a budget traveler with that backpack. jmo

New video of the gunman riding a bike on the Upper West Side after the killing has been released (video in article below)
<snipped>
Three spent shell casings were found at the scene along with three live rounds from a 9mm, and NYPD detectives are working to determine whether the words on the casings were meant as a message from the shooter and a hint at his motive. They believe the shooting could be the result of a grudge against the insurance company.

A new video released on Thursday shows the alleged suspect biking out of Central Park, on West 85th Street, after the shooting.

[…]

A canvas of surveillance cameras on the perimeter of Central Park also revealed a person resembling the suspect entered the park on the Upper West Side, near the Fredrick Douglass houses, hours before the shooting and exited the park on the west side sometime after the shooting.

While I do understand that concerns about health companies denying claims are out there and family members feel that their one has died because of such actions exist; it is not quite as clear cut, and prevalent as one might believe. In many cases, it is an opinion based on the care or something that the family wishes could have been done, but no direct proof or knowledge that it would have saved the person. Upon googling, I found very few notations of people dying due to insurance claim denial. However, to the individual who suffered the loss, I can see how they would blame the insurance company. Anyway, all to say is it could be that, but I think there is only a slight chance that the suspect has committed this because of something like that.
I don't think that you're going to find a lot of "notations of people dying due to insurance claim denial" for several reasons, one of them being that not many people want to, or are able to, go to court against an insurance company's sharks who are on retainer for millions, for defamation. Etc. (Also, it doesn't have to happen that a company denies a life-saving drug and the patient dies a month later, directly due to not having the drug. The point is, very, very, many people have their lives wrecked by delays and denials in the insurance industry. In my book, your doctor -the person who is actually educated and trained to provide medical care, isn't the one giving it- it's the CEO of abcinsurer who got an MBA at Harvard, and the others in the pharmaceutical-insurance-federal complex.)

These companies are hugely powerful and profit-driven. I recently read here about someone seeing "hundreds" of complaints online about UNC. Hundreds? Millions would likely be more accurate. The hatred people feel at these ginormous insurance companies is palpable. And UHC is on the top of the heap for being the target of it. (With good reason, IMO.)

Another person here pointed out how awful it is to rage at the poor employee on the other end of the phone and it is. But, WHO does one rage at? Do you think Brian Thompson is going to answer the phone? Can you talk to a live person and get any individually-oriented response to your individual problem at your insurance company? I can't. I'm lucky if the Chat-bot isn't too busy to take my call.

All of this is to say that no one should have gunned down Mr. Thompson on the street. However, there is rage. Absolute rage, and rightly so, at the handful of elites who control the lives of tiny, powerless, often elderly and sick people, all the while ensconced in their cushy lives, with their millions and billions.

this case was on the news here in the netherlands this morning!

my guess would be the shooter is a young guy with ideological reasons, who knows the city quite well

one thing that bothers me - would an anticapitalist go to starbucks? it seems a little bit silly because starbucks is a symbol of capitalism. but i guess his ideas could be more specific than being against everything capitalist. or maybe he’s not very consistent with living according to his ideals when he needs some caffeine, lol

To be honest, no true coffee aficionado would go to Starbucks. But maybe it is a good place to pass the time if he know BT's plans.

Huge errors on his part:

While a suspect has not yet been identified, police believe they will recover good forensic evidence from a water bottle and two power bar wrappers that were discarded at the same Starbucks where police also obtained the surveillance video of the suspect. They say the unspent bullet rounds and the cell phone, which they now have a search warrant to examine, will help in their investigation as well.

The People’s Action Institute, which led the April and July protests, said it was shocked by Thompson’s death — but still used the tragedy to highlight what it said was a “crisis of denials” in America.

The People's Action Institute X post about their Minnetonka Minnesota protest at UHC in July with a link to what their demands are.

the suspect doesn't look that tall to me
also, the suspect seems younger JMO
Very gracious movements. At a certain point, I even thought, could it be a woman? But probably the Starbucks stuff knows.

Interesting again! I guessed he took the subway down from UWS and then transferred to the F. But perhaps he rode his bike to the crime scene?

The image of him at the F train station doesn't show him with a bike so maybe he was in the station simply to keep warm while he waited? It was cold yesterday morning.

I cannot wait to hear what NYPD pieced together.

Or to make it look like it was.
Agree. He was being investigated by the DOJ correct? Do we know how far along that investigation is? Curious to know if depositions have taken place.

They will get the DNA results and fingerprints off the empty Starbucks coffee cup and empty water bottle. How long does this take?

Charlot, those are fightin' words!
Actually, I don't care for Starbucks as a company, but I have to admit, I do LOVE their coffee! I rarely order it, only if someone asks me to meet them there, and then I have the secret pleasure of savoring what seems to me to be a little cup of heaven!

Take a look at the video where the gunman is on his cell phone talking to someone some minutes before the shooting. There is a guy who is striding along with the gunman and I wonder if that guy striding alongside the gunman is an accomplice. Note how that guy purposefully walks at a fast clip paralleling the shooter, but staying a consistent 7 or 8 feet behind (perhaps so as to appear that they are not together.) That's extremely unusual and very uncommon walking behavior. Add to that the fact that the gunman is talking to someone on a cell phone also lends credence to the thought that this is the act of more than one person.
