They just started. He will have to sign on to any agreement if there is one so he will be a part of the negotiations if he wants to.

<modsnip> JMO.
Once you sign the negotiations are over, lol.

Switch Putin and Zelensky around and your post will be correct.
Yup.
Putin is the aggressor, and he is the one that will not give up.
Trump is enabling a dictator and will inspire other dictators.
As the Prime Minister of New Zealand said, “New Zealand remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine as it defends itself in a war that Russia started. It’s mounting the defence of a proud, democratic, sovereign nation, but also the defence of international law.”

The fact that Trump is siding with Russia and North Korea, well, it pretty much says it all. He's siding with dictators, rather than democratic nations.

The press conference was about an economic deal. If you watch the video, notice the shock on Trump and his cabinets faces when he starts talking about security, bringing out photos, talking about how Obama didn't help him, he went all the way back to 1996.
Zelensky engineered/plan to disrupt the press conference. He is 100% at fault. That's like Trump going to visit the King and bringing out photos of the revolutionary war and asking reimbursement for the revolutionary war damages. You don't get invited for one thing and then change the narrative. He blindsided everybody.
Moo
I'm watching it now and have done a synopsis below: In watching the first 19 minutes, it is very clear that there isn't an agreement at all and discussions haven't finished and that Zelensky and Trump are poles apart. Trump is talking about ending the war and compromises and deals with both sides and a deal having been made over minerals. Says he's an arbitrator or mediator. Zelensky is talking about Trump and the US being on Ukraine's side (in response to a question about that). They are just not talking about the same thing! Zelensky is clear that Russia is an aggressor who invaded them and is doing terrible things to prisoners. It was clear from the start that they weren't on the same page or talking about the same thing.

Start of video/meeting:

Trump starts making a speech to camera about the deal. He goes on to talk about he's spoken to Putin and there are thousands of dead. Zelensky's face looks like he is in pain at that point. At 1:35 Trump then starts making negative remarks and political points about the Biden administration - which he does later as well.

Trump is basically saying a deal is done and will be signed later. He then invites Zelensky to speak
Zelensky starts saying he hopes this document will give real security for Ukraine . He says more about how he wants to discuss it and the infrastructure for security guarantees (so basically it doesn't sound like a finalised agreed deal!).

Zelensky says somethign about it's good to try and together stop the war and Putin is a killer and a terrorist. So it sounds like they weren't on the same page right from the start. Zelensky says of course no compromises with a killer. And asking for the US support.

They were not talking about the same deal! As Zelensky explained later in the Fox interview - the deal was not what they expected. There weren't the security guarantees in it.

Zelensky talks about the final point he wanted to talk about - wanting US help with - getting 4000 abducted children returned to Ukraine and exchange of prisoners, then he gets the images out.

He says he wants Trump to understand the situation they are in. Before and after images of released prisoners and what the Russians have done to them.

That even during a war there are rules (about how prisoners are treated) but "these guys (Russia) don't have any rules.

He then shows Trump images of what's been done to children but he's not going to show them to cameras as he suggests it is too unpleasant so he's only showing them to Trump.

Trump then opens questions from reporters

1st question. How much money are you/we putting into xxxx and how does this provide long term security for Ukraine?

Trump says it will be shared income from the resources in Ukraine (or something like that) providing US resources for AI, computers, weapons and many other things.

Trump starts saying something about - the other day they were talking about security and he said "let me make the deal first". Because they;re losing soldiers - 2000, 3000 a week.

At 10.13 he then starts criticizing the Biden administration again.

He (Trump) says this is an incredible agreement for Ukraine because we have a big investment in their country

Trump is about to take another question but Zelensky wants to make a point and is allowed to speak.

Zelensky says in the document there was a very important point about business

A slight friendly disagreement where Zelensky says Europe gave a lot and Trump says - but much less and Zelensky says no. (Earlier Trump had made the point that the US had given more money than Europe which other European leaders have said isn't the case).

But it was all very jovial and laughter - the disagreement over whether Us or Europe gave the most.

A further question for Trump from press - something about history

Trump jokingly replies something about being far superior to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Trump talking about having a great 35 days and this would be a great achievement if we can get the war to stop. He's talking about what a great first month they've had and there's never been such an opening to a presidential time like "we've had".

Trump says this is one of the most important things because think of the death - whether they;re in Russia or Ukraine (Zelensky is starting to look pained and uncomfortable). Zelensky chips in with something - "they came to xxxx" Trump carries on "it should have never started. If I were President this would never have started."

Another question from a press member (sounds French) to Zelensky. Do you feel like the US is on your side as the President of France is on your side at this point.

Zelensky replies something about the United States being on "our side" from the very beginning of the occupation. And I think that President Trump on our side and of course I am sure the United States and President will not stop support - this is crucial for us, it's important for us. And he says the President talks about the people who are dying but they came for our territory, they came to our land, they began this war and they have to stop and I think this is the question, the most important question - can President Trump, I hope yes, with some other allies, to stop Putin... withdraw his troops from our land, and I think that you asked about the history - I think that if President (gestures to indicate Trump) or when he will stop Putin, President Trump will bring peace to our country - I think he will be on this wall (gestures to presumably famous people paintings on the wall).

Trump then says - we've had very very good talks.

Another question from press to both of them (sounds British) - President Zelensky has said there are no compromises with Putin, do you think (to Trump) there are going to have to be compromises that President Zelensky will have to make? And President Zelensky - is there anything you think you may be able to offer or bring to the table, for example, elections (?)

Trump: I think you're going to have to always make compromises, you can't do any deals without compromises, so certainly he's going to have to make some compromises, but hopefully they won't be as big as some people think you're going to have to make. So that;s all we can do, I'm here as an arbitrator, as a mediator to a certain extent, between two parties that have been very hostile, to put it mildly. They've been very hostile and this has been a vicious war. It's been a vicious war. You know it;s a very level battlefield and those bullets go out and I've said many times, the only thing stopping those bullets is a human body and xxin the case we're talking about young human bodies stopping a lot of bullets - it's dead level. It's great farmland, it's great land but there's very little protection against the bullets and other things that are being shot. So all I can do is see if I can get everybody at the table and get an agreement. I think we're going to end up with an agreement, otherwise I probably wouldn't even be here today.

Zelensky doesn't get chance to say anything - the press start clamouring and Trump takes another question. Zelensky lifts his hands as if to say - I didn't get chance to speak.

Press (American). Mr President, do you think ultimately your legacy will be the peacemaker and not a President that led this country into another war .

Trump: I hope it will and I hope I'm going to be remembered as a peacemaker. This would be a great thing if we could this - to save lives, more than anything else, Second is to save a lot of money but I consider that to be far less important. Thank you Brian (?) for that question. I hope I'll be known and recognised as a peacemaker, this would be a great thing to stop. This is a very dangerous situation. You know this could lead to a third world war. This was headed in the wrong direction. If this election was lost - and by the way we won it by a lot - this was a mandate - we won every swing state, we won the popular vote by millions of votes, we won everything. If you look at the areas of red - take a look at a map, this was a big mandate. And this was one of the things - that we're gonna get this thing settled. If we didn't win I think this could have very well ended up in a third world war and that would not have been a good situation (hinting at criticising former administration). What was your second question?

Press: My second question was for President Zelensky. Do you ever ... why don't you wear a suit?

Zelensky: What? (Looks surprised and checks the question by asking what).

Laughter in the background

Press: Repeats question - Why don't you wear a suit? You're at the highest level in this country .. and you refuse to wear a suit. I just ... do you own a suit?

Zelensky: Yes, yes - problems - puts his hand on his heart (still looking surprised)

Press: A lot of Americans have problems but ....something about this office?

Zelensky, looking down at the floor then at the reporter, in a polite relaxed tone "I will wear a costume after this war will finish. (Gesticulates to reporter) "maybe something like yours, yes, maybe something better, I don't know - we will see. Maybe something cheaper, yah, thank you.

Stops at 19:19 (I need a break).

I think it helps to read a transcription - without accents - to actually hear/read what people have said.

Once you sign the negotiations are over, lol.
You have got to be kidding with the last paragraph...
No I'm totally serious about that.

Zelenskyy doesn't trust Putin at all so maybe that feeling is preventing him from wanting to use diplomacy to end the war. He sure made that clear during the PC.

He needs to put his emotions aside and try to do the right things to save his country. In other words he needs to stop being a big baby. JMO.

I think you'll find you're in a minority there, with respect. Strength of support for Zelensky since that meeting has been absolutely massive - in Britain, in Ukraine and from most European leaders. People have been posting support all over Twitter. Zelensky's popularity has risen in Ukraine as a result.
Maybe the minority here, but not in the country (the U.S.). President Trump has a clear mandate to negotiate the end of the war between Ukraine and Russia, and that's what he is trying to do. The U.S. electorate does not want to continue to support this war and that is one of the mandates that President Trump has to the electorate and taxpayers of the country.

I haven't followed every post here on the this thread, but has anyone discussed yet how a "reporter" from TASS (the Russian propaganda media) was able to be present in the Oval Office for the Trump/Zelenskyy meeting? Well-respected AP wasn't allowed in yet Russian agents were. When questioned, the White House said, "oh, there must have been a mistake". NOBODY gets into the White House, let alone the Oval Office, by mistake. Trump is inviting Russia into the Oval Office.
Shameful!!

No stand up guys in that lineup. Get rid of them, they're not for America, just themselves. Weasels.

What lineup are you referring to? The Cabinet members in the new administration are impressive, starting with the Vice President of the United States, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, etc. It's an impressive lineup.

"The White House did not address how the unapproved reporter was able to gain access to the Oval Office."

"Trump has increasingly tightened media access to the White House, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt last week announcing that the administration would control who has access to the White House in the Oval Office press pool"

And, the so-called reporter who asked Zelenskyy why he wasn't wearing a suit? Well that's Marjorie Taylor Greene's boyfriend. No bias there, right?!?

And here's a photo of Winston Churchill visiting the White House in 1942 and not wearing a suit. No one questioned him.

It was all a set up against Zelenskyy. TASS "reporter" and the suit question from MTG's boyfriend. Disgraceful.

Zelenskyy doesn't trust Putin at all so maybe that feeling is preventing him from wanting to use diplomacy to end the war. He sure made that clear during the PC.

He needs to put his emotions aside and try to do the right things to save his country. In other words he needs to stop being a big baby. JMO.
You're referring to Putin in that last sentence, right? Because Zelenskyy has been nothing but a hero to Ukraine.

"The White House did not address how the unapproved reporter was able to gain access to the Oval Office."

"Trump has increasingly tightened media access to the White House, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt last week announcing that the administration would control who has access to the White House in the Oval Office press pool"

Of course they didn't. They clearly provided access. Putin must be happy. Clearly Trump is in Putin's pocket. There is no other explanation.

I'm talking about Putin and Trump who are negotiating that deal for themselves. They have not behaved well for years in many facets of their lives and one of them has done all those things at one time or another. As a result they cannot be trusted.
The 47th President of the United States is trusted by the majority of the electorate, he has a mandate to try to negotiate a peace plan and stop funding the war in Ukraine.

What I take from that first 19 minutes is talks were not complete. Trump is trying to do a business deal but hasn't finalised the details about security for Ukraine or what the compromises will be. Because he hasn't finished a peace deal as yet.

Zelensky, I suspect, has been briefed to ensure that the Us will still support Ukraine in the meantime and help stop Putin, before the deal is signed. It was an unfinished deal and essentially a press conference for Trump to promote himself as a peacemaker and criticize the previous administration for aiding the war rather than trying to stop it.

On the other hand - I think the idea of negotiations and stopping the war is good. However, that wasn't possible at the start because Putin was going to do what he was going to do. He wouldn't listen to anyone. There was a pause at the start, but then Putin went ahead and invaded.

The next stage to try and stop Putin was sanctions. Ukraine were defending themselves against invaders - and still are.

Trump and Zelensky were not suited to have this conversation in public - because final agreements hadn't been reached. And possibly misunderstanding on both sides also because Zelensky has one world view and Trump has another (predominantly self promotion although trying to achieve peace is a good thing - if it's realistic and if it has the security needed for Ukraine - not some airy fairy - do a minerals deal with me and Putin will leave you alone).

Yes, it seems clear that a WH authority gave the Russian reporter admittance to the Oval Office. Especially with their "crack down" on which media they are allowing into the Oval Office.
