I think it was very bad communication prior to Zelensky's visit, and also assumptions - particularly on Trump's part. Zelensky had been clear the deal was not finalised and there needed to be further discussion.

The press conference did neither of them any favours in the public eye. Trump was seen to be having a tantrum about Biden and conspiracy theories, Vance spoke loutishly and was demeaning. Zelensky was made to look a fool to the Russians.

It was a total disaster. The talks should have happened BEFORE the deal was signed and the press conference AFTER the deal was signed.

One concern I do have tbh -Musk has said he does not understand why America is in the UN or Nato. At this point I do not even trust Trump to keep quiet if talking with Trump about things other leaders have said to him if he gets angry. At this point it does seem like we are moving towards the European army that has been muted for a while now.

As a result of these days, we see clear support from Europe. Even more unity, even more willingness to cooperate.

Everyone is united on the main issue – for peace to be real, we need real security guarantees. And this is the position of all of Europe – the entire continent. The United Kingdom, the European Union, Türkiye.

Of course, we understand the importance of America, and we are grateful for all the support we’ve received from the United States. There has not been a day when we haven’t felt gratitude. It’s gratitude for the preservation of our independence – our resilience in Ukraine is based on what our partners are doing for us – and for their own security.

What we need is peace, not endless war. And that’s why we say security guarantees are the key to this.

The other issue was Trump and Vance are both English speakers. Zelensky is not great at it and did not even understand everything they were saying to him.

The funny thing as I understand is some papers that are not positive to this adminstration are not even allowed in the news conferences.

   Last night, a senior Ukrainian official told the BBC that the terms of a deal - to allow the US access to rare Ukrainian minerals - had been agreed.
   
   Reports suggested a US request for $500bn (£395bn) in potential revenues from using Ukraine's natural resources had been dropped. But we also learnt that Ukrainian security guarantees had not made their way into the deal - something Kyiv has been pushing for.
   
   Twenty-four hours later, little more is known. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenksy has said it's important that at least a "sentence" about guarantees is included, but US President Donald Trump reiterated his stance that such assurances should be made by Europe, Ukraine's "next door neighbour".
   
   We do, however, know Trump and Zelensky will thrash out the terms of the agreement in a meeting in Washington DC on Friday. Trump said so during his first cabinet meeting - during which he also hinted at a possible Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin would need to make "concessions" for that to happen.
   
   It's a busy end to the week for the US president, who's also hosting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer - tomorrow - for talks where Ukraine is at the top of the agenda.

   In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirms that Kyiv is "preparing for negotiations as early as this Friday" with the US, in reference to the bilateral minerals deal we've been reporting on for the majority of the day.
   
   "Guarantees of peace and security - this is the key to ensuring that Russia will no longer be destroying the lives of other nations," he says, adding:
   
   "I will meet President Trump.
   
   "For me and for all of us in the world, it is crucial that America’s assistance is not stopped. Strength is needed on the path to peace."

   A little earlier we reported on the next steps Kyiv had said it would take to get the minerals deal with the US over the line - the first being a meeting of the government to back it.
   
   The Ukrainian government has now given the green light for the country's official delegation to sign a bilateral minerals deal with the US in Washington later this week.
   
   Ukraine's Prime Minister Dmytro Shmyhal made the announcement at Wednesday's cabinet meeting in Kyiv, after his ministers analysed the text of the draft deal.
   
   President Zelensky is due to lead the Ukrainian delegation heading to DC, with his American counterpart Donald Trump praising it as an opportunity for Zelenesky to sign a "very big agreement".

The deal sets up an investment fund to search for minerals, and set outs how revenues would be split.

“But we also know that there have been infringements on free speech that actually affect not just the British – of course what the British do in their own country is up to them – but also affect American technology companies and, by extension, American citizens, so that is something that we’ll talk about today at lunch.”

Sir Keir then responded: “Well, we’ve had free speech for a very, very long time in the United Kingdom and it will last for a very, very long time.

“Certainly, we wouldn’t want to reach across US citizens, and we don’t, and that’s absolutely right, but in relation to free speech in the UK I’m very proud of our history there.”"

Does Vance just believe conspiracy theories on Elon Musk's Twitter? Or has he actually been to the UK? I don't think so! Like he hasn't been to Ukraine (once possibly).

He is not a diplomat - he is a loud mouthed troublemaker IMO. He should not have been at that press conference - it should have just been Zelensky and Trump. Not Trump and a bunch of <modsnip>.

I prefer a president who believes in democracy. JMO.

The whole world is moving towards more authoritarian leaders. Putin, Xi Jinping, Modi, Erdogan, Orban, now Trump. We don't know how the things will be in Canada or France.

It reflects the economy, but also, one can view it as cyclical pendulum movements. It will swing in the other direction in a while.

Your link above. It was known in advance, that the agreement still needed to be finalised. Zelensky was expecting that, Trump was ignoring it and just wanting it signed.
