Further on that topic, maybe a foolish notion but I’m going to admit I’ve wondered if the two missing children were taken and are on the reserve for their protection, especially if there’s been recent CPS involvement deeming them at risk of intervention. It doesn’t take much these days, for example simply a report from a school about a child being hungry or not being clothed properly. Purely my speculation…while hoping for a best case scenario.
Indigenous Peoples have lost their children to residential schools, day schools, boarding schools, the ‘60s Scoop and child welfare.

We have a responsibility to put them first. They are even more important than the Elders. The Elders are important because they teach the children, but the children are the most important.”
Indigenous people ‘know the best for their children’
Great article, it explains a lot. It talks aboutthe resdential school system and all the harm done. if people take time to learn about it, they will understand the atrocities done.
There is an overrepresentation of indigenous youth in the child welfare system, ( as well as prisons) like by a long shot.
People will argue that the same thing is still happening, families are still getting their children taken away ( those stats are a possible indicator of that) which also speaks to the why? ( intergenerational trauma) . whats worse was they were losng their sense of culture by being put in non-indigenous placements
Not to sound like a broken record, but when the TRC came in, they did a HUGE canada wide conference in several cities, allowing residential school survivors to speak about their experiences. I went to one it was very powerful.
From those conference's the TRC came up with reccomendations and calls to action, IE, educating young generations, and learning about the res school became part of the school curriculum, and many other things like how reserves/ bands have the right to govern their own people ( child Welfare) Developed a criteria for involvement in child welfare.
It has also been dangerous ( at times ) for social workers to go on to reserves. (bad outcomes) Theyre not taking it anymore and rightly so.
There is a history that Canada has to be accountable for. We have some harm to repair. A promise of good intention and not the intentions of the past, is in part why they do those land acknowledgments
There is a lot to know, anyone interested can read, I dont want to push anything on anyone.
It's a big deal around here. Many people take it seriously
The pope even came to Maskwacis last summer to make a formal apology,
