“We’re exploring all avenues in this missing persons investigation,” says Staff Sergeant Curtis MacKinnon, Pictou County District RCMP. “We have officers from multiple disciplines dedicated to finding Lilly and Jack, including highly trained RCMP major crime and forensic investigators.”

To date, more than 180 tips have been received from the public, and are being followed up on. Officers have so far identified 35 people for formal interviews as part of the investigation, including community members and those closest to the children. And on May 8 and 9, the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team (URT) scoured bodies of water around Lansdowne Station; URT’s two-day operation didn’t uncover any evidence.

“We continue to work day and night on this file,” says S/Sgt. MacKinnon. “Like all Nova Scotians, we want answers, and we want to know what happened to these children.”

Is this sounding as if they are now moving away from the theory of the children wandering away?

I think they were moving away from that theory in the first 24 hours.

I can't see fb, so thank you for adding this.
It is so aggravating that one must be a member of FaceBook to view posts and videos put out by public agencies, particularly in cases involving missing persons or potential crimes. FaceBook should make those pages publicly available to everyone (even if read-only or view-only) since they are so important to getting the word out.

In cases such as this one, FaceBook's member-only policy is limiting distribution of important public announcements.

I wonder if the brown shirt and pants combo is what we see in one of the photos that's been used in a lot of news reports like this one.

But I also wouldn't be surprised if he was in just a pull-up.

So 35 people for formal interviews! This is great news!
That's a LOT of people who may know more!
IMO JMO
The fact that so many people can perhaps give information leads ME PERSONALLY to think it's not just the mother and step father who knows what has happened to these children!

Go RCMP go!

Agreed, there should be exceptions.

Hence why I immediately asked if I could post here (knowing I couldn't) so attempted a link ...I knew someone would be able to find it properly though so Websleuthers could have the information too!

This tells you which Facebook posts/pages can be posted. LE ones are allowed.

They are "partners" rather than married, and I wonder if that is because some kind of child-related benefit would be reduced if they were married. I have also wondered if the mother moving out from her partner's home may have something to do with child-related benefits dependent upon being a single parent and the now public revelation that she is living with someone with whom she has another child. I don't know about Canada, but in some similar circumstances in the USA, a person may have to pay back benefits previously received under the assumption of single-parenting and non-cohabitation once it is learned that assumption is not true.
In Canada you have to inform Canada Revenue Agency, immediately, of any change of address or marital status for the very reasons you cite above. What you shared is exactly what I was thinking.

In order to be recognized as a common-law union in Nova Scotia, you have to be co-habitating no less than two years. A legal FAQ page, linked, delineates the difference between married/common-law and how the Matrimonial Property Act applies to common-law unions.

Seeing as how DM’s mother owns everything, 50% of nothing is nothing.

If she had been presenting herself as in a relationship and living together to the public at large, but then for whatever reason had to publicly broadcast a change in status, given the publicity surrounding the parents, maybe Canada Revenue Agency would take the time to reassess earlier returns to make sure the information she presented was accurate and true. jmo/moo

180 tips as well... that is also good news as it indicates people either observed things or are aware of things that may be relevant and they are reporting such to LE.

Still praying the kids are found alive and placed somewhere safe.

We have previously touched upon whether or not DM could be on the autism spectrum (ASD). There has been nothing said confirming nor denying this, however, the way he speaks could be "Compensatory Strategies"
Autistic people may develop compensatory strategies to manage social interactions and navigate communication. These strategies can include using past experiences, logic, or other coping mechanisms to regulate social behavior.
in addition people with a previous Traumatic Brain Injury may also use compensatory strategies.

There are many possible reasons for DM's demeanor and speech patterns and the way in which he expresses himself. One possible one is deception but there are other equally valid reason.

Will share these out!

I was wondering if they usually see her family on the weekends and if so, they would see the children weren't there.
A part of me hopes both are involved because then I think it less likely the children are dead and more likely that the two adults gave the children away or sold them as some kind of informal private adoption... and that they are alive. Or possibly, one is dead due to some kind of incident (drug overdose, physical abuse), and the other given away or sold/adopted out because that child witnessed something about the incident that the parents didn't want revealed to authorities. (ETA: I think this less likely because I would imagine that, even going through underground channels, it would take awhile to put together giving children away or selling them, so wouldn't happen quickly on the heels of an incident involving one child.)

I keep thinking how odd it is that they seem to know what Lilly was likely wearing (and doesn't it sound like a cute outfit with backpack that a child might be delivered to adoptive parents in?...), but seem to have no idea what Jack was wearing, other than a pull-up and his rain boots. But then, where is he? Searchers found no signs of either child other than supposed boot prints near the house (one set or two?).

If something happened 2 days earlier than the children were reported missing, that would give the holder of the children (or child) time to get out of the country before authorities started looking.

Really hoping a deep dive into phone and other electronic forensics leads to recovery of two alive children.

Actually, the father would be legally responsible too, based on what the Criminal Code says:
Criminal Code

Duty of persons to provide necessaries

  • 215(1) Every one is under a legal duty
    • (a) as a parent, foster parent, guardian or head of a family, to provide necessaries of life for a child under the age of sixteen years;
    • (b) to provide necessaries of life to their spouse or common-law partner; and
    • (c) to provide necessaries of life to a person under his charge if that person
      • (i) is unable, by reason of detention, age, illness, mental disorder or other cause, to withdraw himself from that charge, and
      • (ii) is unable to provide himself with necessaries of life

What are necessaries of life? It doesn’t appear to include the scope of negligence in child minding other than obligation in providing basic things such as food, shelter, medical attention, etc.
JMO

Some common examples of failing to provide the necessaries of life include the following:

  • Failing to provide your child with food;
  • Failing to provide your foster child with medical attention;
  • Failing to provide your spouse with medical care; and
  • Failing to provide food, to person with a mental illness under your direct care;

This link won’t open for me. Is this news report really stating the two missing children were last seen on the road past their home at about 10am Friday?? If so, that’s major news.

Could be possible they were either hoping to catch the school bus or were waiting for someone to pick them up???
