CANADA Canada - Jack, 4 & Lilly Sullivan, 6, Vulnerable, wandered from home 10am, Gairloch Rd, Landsdowne Station, Pictou County, NS, 2 May 2025 #5

"The only thing in the mine today is bats. The mine was sealed after the body was found in 2002 but a pipe was left to give bats access to the first tunnel. Historical mine shafts often provide an important habitat for Nova Scotia’s bats during winter hibernation. Bats need very specific environmental and climatic conditions and need to be in a place where they are undisturbed during the winter."

Malehya marked the children absent from school at 6:17 am and four hour later she made the call to 911.

So, wait, at 6:17 she was up and coherent enough to remember she should mark children absent at school, yet some three hours later she was in bed drifting in and out of sleep, while the kids were awake and runnning around the house?

Weird.

This article is behind a paywall but new info is: They were in New Glasgow getting groceries. They spent that night at home and Daniel worked on the fence at the back of the property. His mother owns the mobile home, but resides in the camper. Malehya marked the children absent from school at 6:17 am and four hour later she made the call to 911. They discuss copper mines in the area and Alex Penney whose body was not discovered for 19 years.

The children were last seen in public on May 1, getting groceries with their stepfather, Daniel Martell, in the nearby town of New Glasgow.

I was under the impression that MBM and the youngest daughter was there as well, not sure anymore

That's really early for the school to be open and answering phones, so they must have used an app or an email was sent.
When my daughter was younger…. if she was suddenly sick the night before school and I wasn’t planning on sending her the next day, I was able to call the school that night and leave a message saying she wasn’t going to be in the following day. I would state the date as well. Not sure if you can still do that

That brings into question whether he actually made it home with both Jack and Lilly (if MBM wasn’t shopping with them). Also interesting that he was working on the fence that evening - the fence that the children supposedly climbed over to wander off… MOO

Dangerous dog back there comes to mind again. Why the back of the property where that other fenced in area for the dog is? Why is fixing the fence so important that he has to do it at night?

As a mom to 7 kids I find this one of the most normal things about this case. Granted, every parent's experiences are going to be somewhat different. For me, this happened often when they were all 6 and under.

Very good question. He gets few shifts at work, but must fix a fence at night, that night. Convenient planting of a story line? Maybe he needed supplies and picked them up at hardware store? Maybe all rumours. Bet the rumour mill is rampant in the community.
Goggle maps or Goggle earth and fake drive along that road, both directions. IMO there is zero chance kids would walk that. It's boring, except for a few houses one way, there is zero out there. They did not wander the road, and that leaves the bush. Not along there they wouldn't, so it would have to be thru backyard if at all. Miles into that bush would be hard work for kids and it too would be boring. I think if they went into bush, the oldest would have the house insight, and not stray from eyesight of that home.
I think dogs would leave evidence, and can't see a dog mauling two kids at same time. If it did happen, then why lie about it? It was an accident.
Back to abduction, murder or sold.

So it hasn't been reported what types of dogs lived/live on the property?

I think a fatal dog attack that was covered-up seems incredibly unlikely, though.
There's only been a single mention that the mother of DM has a dog. No other details about size, type, age, etc. The dangerous dog/death coverup speculation doesn't seem at all probable to me.

I agree. As someone posted above, if it was a dangerous dog attack, you would just report it no need to cover up IMO.

If Daniel told Malehya that the fence was secure and there was no way the dog could get out and get into the area where the kids played, and the dog actually did get over there, by digging or whatever, then he was wrong and could possibly cover up evidence of his mistake.

I find it interesting that it was DM alone seen with the children, getting groceries the night before they disappeared.
Why would he take them, given that at least one was sick enough to miss school, and given that MBM was home, and could have looked after this wee sick child?
Why fix the fence at night, as commented earlier, when he was only working 1 shift per week? You’d think he’d be caught up on his household handyman projects.
Why did MBM separate from DM the next day! And then cut off all ties and ultimately change her relationship status to single? I understand an experience like losing children can cause enough strain on a couple to break them apart. I don’t think that usually happens the next day. What we usually see is a couple standing together and supporting one another, leaning on each other. What is the foundation of this split, at such an early point in this crisis?
Why has DM lost access to his daughter? This is an odd outcome, imo. Has MBM made allegations against DM, to indicate he is a danger to the child? There is no indication in news sources that MBM has lost access as well, so I am assuming the younger daughter is still in her custody.
Is DM fighting for the chance to see his daughter?
DM has commented to the media in defense of MBM, to leave her alone, expressed concern for her mental health. Yet MBM has not said a word and is not defending DM. Yes, her family has acknowledged the advice of LE not to make any more comments. Yet DM has made comments to media. Presumably he would also be under the same caution from LE, not to speak to the press.
I am glad for the fairly complete update in the Globe and Mail article mentioned above. These are all questions I am left with, and it is all just my own speculation and opinion.

Where does it say that he was working on the fence in the evening?

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

I am sceptical that he was working on the fence the very night before the children disappeared. It just sounds like yet another thing he said to make himself look good.

I think the grocery shopping trip was probably unrelated to the children going missing. But I am curious if anything besides food was purchased.
