I've been skimming back over some of the reporting on this case, and there are a few things that, IMO, it's surprising we haven't heard more about (someone please correct me if any of these things have been clarified and I missed it):
1) A more detailed description of what the kids were wearing that morning, or at the very least what they were wearing the night before/whenever the parents last saw them.
2) What Lilly might've had in her backpack (especially the supposed blanket - if she did have a blanket with her and at least one piece of it came off, surely it would be useful for the public to know what it looks like in case they find any more?)
3) Had the kids had anything to eat or drink that morning? IIRC neither parent mentioned anything about getting breakfast for them, so either they hadn't had anything (which would probably reduce how far they'd be able to walk), or they got it themselves (which raises questions about whether they were used to being left to their own devices in the morning).
4) What was the kids' relationship with each other like? E.g. did they generally get on? Was Lilly protective of Jack? Was Jack the kind of younger sibling who'd always follow his big sister if she wandered off somewhere?
5) Maybe this wouldn't have produced anything relevant, but I'm a little surprised none of the journalists who've interviewed DM have (AFAIK) asked him much about what the day before was like, particularly why they decided to keep both kids home on the Friday when they were well enough to go shopping the day before (sidenote - maybe I'm way off-base here, but I can't help wondering if the trip to New Glasgow was done deliberately to ensure that there were confirmed sightings of the kids on that day. That's total speculation with no evidence, though, of course)
These are great questions, and I have wondered, in particular, about 2 and 4:
2- Did Lily take her backpack with her even when she was just playing outside, or was it strictly for school and trips to town or to the store, etc.? To me, this matters as to her intentions that morning. Was she just playing in the yard with her backpack? Or was she planning to go somewhere?
And did her backpack usually have schoolwork and school supplies in it, or did she carry stuffies and her blanket, etc.? If it had schoolwork in it, did she take those out and replace them with snacks, etc. to run away or go on an adventure?
And regarding the blanket, how did a piece of the blanket fall off? Was it already worn and in tatters? Did the piece come off as a result of great wear and tear, or did it seem to be ripped by a branch or person? Or was it cut with scissors?
Also, did Jack have a backpack or any little bag or case that he carried with him at all? One of my sons had a little case that he always carried when he thought he was going somewhere when he was about Jack's age. It held a collection of his favorite little toys and items at that time.
4- I do think it's important to know their relationship. If they planned to leave together - even to explore the woods, etc., would Lily have helped him prepare to go out? It did they behave more like peers? Could he have wandered off and she went after him and they both became lost? It she left, told him to stay, but he followed her anyway and they both became lost?
Also, were the kids known to always wear their boots, even when just playing in the back yard? Or did they only put them on when made to, in order to go somewhere?
Lastly, I do think it would have been somewhat (or rather) dark in those woods at that time of morning. It would be nice to see exactly how dark. Many kids are adventurous, but usually not in the dark at that age. Unless it wasn't dark or unless they were comfortable back there from going back there with parents at other times. MOO
