NY - UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fatally shot in Midtown. #12 *Arrest*

I seriously doubt that LM has 10,000 admirers in New York City and, in any event, he's not going to "walk free" from both his state and federal charges. He's going away for a long time, and will be forgotten as other news stories emerge and he's behind bars where he belongs.

Justice for Brian Thompson!
He has "fans" all over Reddit.

Just one of the many subreddits devoted to him has over 32,000 subscribers.

They see themselves as "champions of change" and "engaged in the cause."

They are planning to be outside the courtroom at his hearing and cheer him on.

That is sickening IMO. I'd bet the average age of LM's 'fans' are between 20-30 years old. Let's see how many actually show up in person rather than post/ride the social media wave of indignation. Blah, blah, blah.

Please go away and let the Justice System handle this case based on facts and evidence rather than trying to create a SM Martyr.

IMO, his fanbase is mainly teenage girls and young women who are attracted to his good looks. Also, he's intelligent, comes from a wealthy family, is well traveled, and from social media seemed to be a young guy enjoying life. I highly doubt that the vast majority of his fans care one way or another about the health insurance industry, and unfortunately they can overlook the heinous crimes which LM has been charged with because they find him attractive.

If the perp was an unattractive guy, I doubt there would be multiple online fan communities dedicated to him.

Ya know... murdering someone in cold blood would be all I needed for me to stop considering someone's looks, intelligence, wealth, etc. Those things won't matter if he shoots you dead! JMO!

Agreed. Personally I find LM unattractive, but it may be my bias based upon the fact that he is charged with the planning and death of an innocent man he didn't even know from any Industry of Capitalism he could have pulled out of a hat. He's a danger to society and I don't believe he'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

Maybe his fangirls and boys will keep him in commissary and misguided love letters heroizing his 'sticking it to the man' over the next 40+ years. Which did absolutely nothing to further a solution to a very real problem.

“I don't expect that there'll be an insanity defense,” Abrams tells PEOPLE. “I think that would seemingly defeat the entire purpose of what he allegedly did and why allegedly he did it.”

“I think it is very troubling that Luigi Mangione, based on the facts we know, has an enormous amount of support, and people donating to his defense fund,” says Abrams, who notes that the defendant comes from a wealthy family. “Of course, he deserves a defense in court. But this is not a guy who needs a defense fund.”

The LM defense fund hasn't raised that much money if you compare it to another case that garnered national support of $2.9 million, the Daniel Penny case. $300,000 pales in comparison and won't last very long, but the attorneys are milking it in the media for all it's worth, trying to show there is lots of sympathy for their client. They should be transparent about how much they are receiving from LM's parents to cover the costs of his defense. But I guess that wouldn't go over so well with the public.

Would like to know more about how LM's family stands with LM.

Fortunately for them, they have managed to stay out of any media spotlight.

Doesnt matter about LM looks, he's accused of murder. Allegedly he shot an innocent father of two young boys in the back.
Yeah, the accused is a coward. moo
Thats all I need to know about him. He's ugly inside. Thats what matters; what's inside a person.

Hes (LN) is not smart, hes stupid.

Hes lazy and traveled the world because he could. He messed up his life, not his back.

Trial will reveal the facts and evidence -- totality of the circumstances.

His fangirls and fanboys are clueless on the case perhaps; too young and naive to know better? Who knows, who cares.
Some people just need to idolize a person, or worship someone? idk, instead of putting more energy into themselves.

Send this clown LM money even though his family has more than enough funds to cover his defense. It can go toward more matchy matchy outfits.

Just a moo ;) And, yes, innocent until proven guilty in a court of law!

Justice for Brian Thompson's loved ones

Oh, agree completely.

He’s cute looking, but hardly unique or special.

Once his mask was off he looked just like a million other young Italian males here in NYC.

Ted Bundy was considered good-looking too, and these guys always attract sick fans.

Right now he seems to be fading into yesterday’s news here, but I’m sure when the trial starts he’ll be front page news again.

This article mentions LM. It's interesting that he is being mentioned, IMO.

I think The Independent used this story as click-bait to try to get some mileage out of the LM/United Health Care news story.

They don't mention that U.S. health care systems (same in Canada, for that matter) do not normally cover medical care outside of the country. Nor do they cover repatriation costs. That is why people take out travel insurance when they go on trips.

Just click-bait, IMO.

True, but not everyone knows or thinks about travel insurance, and travel insurance has limited coverage, too. So people could use mental gymnastics to say it's still the same "cause."

I suppose some readers will not make the connection about the lack of travel insurance of this person during his trip overseas. But even my elderly mother would always take travel insurance for three months when she would go to Florida from Canada every winter. I wouldn't travel abroad without taking travel health insurance. And this guy was going abroad to take part in risky activity such as skiing.

In any event, I don't see this as having anything to do with United Health Care, but as you say, it could have an impact on those who don't understand how real life works. Like the LM supporters, I guess.

Edited to add -

College students from other countries (Canada, UK, Germany, India, China, etc.) are required to have health insurance before being given their immigration documents (I-20 visas) to allow them to come to the U.S. to study. They also have to prove, in advance, that they have purchased repatriation insurance.

Mangione’s new website includes a link to a GiveSendGo crowdfunding page. Supporters have been making donations to help pay his legal fees. The initial goal of $500,000 was reached quickly, and the new goal is $1,000,000.

I find it disgusting that these attorneys are seeking to make money off of the murder of an innocent man and father of two.

A Manhattan grand jury charged him with an 11-count indictment, which includes one of murder in the first-degree and two of murder in the second-degree, along with other weapon and forgery charges. His Friday court hearing is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. ET.

The first-degree murder charge alleges he killed the executive “in furtherance of an act of terrorism,” which is legally defined as an intent to intimidate or coerce the civilian population or a government unit. One of the second-degree counts also alleges Mangione committed murder “as a crime of terrorism.”
