Mangione will also appear in court on March 19 for a hearing on his federal charges, including murder through use of a firearm, two stalking charges and a firearms offense. Mangione could face the death penalty if convicted, which is not an option in the state charges against him.

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealth Group chief executive Brian Thompson, arrives for a hearing in Manhattan Criminal Court on New York state murder and terrorism charges in New York City

He has pleaded not guilty to shooting dead UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4.

Around 1:40 PM, the Mangione supporters in the public line briefly erupt into cheering for the arrival of Manhione’s defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo. Audio clips of the cheering intermittently loops on reporters’ phones in the press queue.

Looks like there’s both green Super Mario Luigi outfits in the crowd, along with maroon sweater tributes to Mangione and Agnifilo’s matching outfits from the previous court appearance.

Most of the public line (all but maybe twenty people) did not make it in to the courtroom on Friday afternoon. The "Free Luigi" scarf woman, did make it in.

2:24 PM Mangione enters, wearing black bulletproof vest over a green sweater, with white collar shirt peeking out. His attorney Karen Agnifilo requests he be unshackled during the status conference. Court security opposes the unshackling.

Mangione's signature eyebrows arch up while an assistant district attorney updates the judge on the status of evidence production.

2:31 PM - outdoor crowd cheering can be heard in the 15th floor courtroom.

2:38 quick hearing essentially over. Judge sets motions schedule, but no trial date.Agnifilo asks the judge for time the defense lawyers to speak to Luigi alone because of his overriding federal custody.Judge says he's ready to remand Luigi to New York state.

Agnifilo tells judge, on federal custody issue - “When they’re hanging the death penalty over year head, you have no choice but to consent.”

The judge held a sidebar and then just walked away.

2:47 - Luigi exits, shuffling while waist shackled on top of his green cableknit sweater."No outbursts," a CSO barks. There were no courtroom outbursts.

This article says that LM's manifesto was over 200 pages... ? I do not recall that. Thought he was just scribbling in McDonald's.

Also in today's news:

I think whatever one thinks about LM, he has become a "symbol" for some larger than life issues. IMO.

Lol, these people are so creepy.

They confused "words" with "pages." I'd expect nothing less.

During the press conference, LM’s attorney expressed frustration that the chief of detectives and the city mayor did an interview with HBO to discuss evidence in LM case; talking about paperwork and forensics that we (defense) dont even have.

Though they (defense) did receive that info today.

So I will give her kudos for speaking up about that. All accused deserve a fair trial.

moo

Justice for Brian Thompson's loved ones

Hopefully they're weeded out in Voire Dire.
IMO some good questions for the prosecution to ask during voir dire would be "Have you ever posted in an online community which supports LM?", "Have you ever participated in a protest related to healthcare or in support of LM?", and "Have you ever attended or attempted to attend a court hearing for LM?"

A couple dozen members of the public were allowed into Friday’s hearing, including one wearing a “Free Luigi” scarf.

The killing also has sent shock waves through the corporate world, rattling executives who say they saw a spike in threats.
After a jury is seated and the trial begins, I hope that the court will prohibit clothing that demonstrates support for the accused.

There's no way he'll get away with murder in a trial. Too much evidence against him. What are the chances that he'll get pardoned one day by some future president, because it would bee seen as a popular move?
i remember both biden and trump strongly denounced what happened - of course we don’t know who will be president of the US next (and after that, and after that) but for now i think it seems unlikely there will be a president who wants to do so. i could be wrong though!

my best guess for the trial outcome is there won’t be acquittal, jury nullification or death penalty, but i could see a long prison sentence or a hung jury. pure speculation of course.
