It seems odd that a purchase in Connecticut stood out without it being something odd.
My guess is that particular weapon is a rare purchase, so was narrowed down to CT fairly quickly.

I can see both. I don't know of that dark area near the eye is an eyebrow, but if it is, then it seems pretty bushy to me, not something typical of a woman, but could be. I think this nose is very distinct and that smile is as well as the chin being very pointy at least from this angle. Someone surely will recognize this person from these features. Even the fit of the jacket is odd.. maybe there is a thick layer of clothing under the jacket or even a bullet proof vest? I think the face is of someone very tiny, but the jacket give the impression of someone with some meat on their bones.

It could be a feminine male or even possibly someone born a male, but identifies as female now. I am not sure how to word that and I mean not disrespect if this is not the correct way to describe this.
It's a male! Look at the hands in the Starbuck's pic. Not fully convinced they're the same person.

However, the person in hostel pics is also male. He appears young (20-30)

Police stated the words on the live rounds and shell casings were meticulously written with a sharpie. Not that it matters, just wanted to clarify.
It strikes me that the words - while seeming to mirror the three "D" words in the title of the book critical of health insurers - could ALSO represent a threat intended to intimidate any potential witnesses, particularly with the one word changed to "DEPOSE."

Is it possible that the victim might have been willing to - or weakening toward a willingness to - cooperate with authorities against others in the DOJ investigation of several executives for monopolistic practices and insider trading?

Ok, got sidetracked for a bit due to an impending tsunami and evacuation.
Caught up now.
So they have his fingerprints now. Time will tell if that helps any. And it was a burner phone....hopefully they can glean some info from that re: the phone convo just before the shooting/ if there was an accomplice.

Thanks for posting that! Here is part of the timeline they put out. Why would he be exiting the 57th Street F train station and coming from the Upper West Side to midtown that early in the morning if his hostel was across the street from the Hilton? Where was he that early if not at the hostel?

  • 6:15 a.m. ET: A surveillance camera image obtained by the Washington Post appears to show the suspect in the United Healthcare CEO’s murder leaving the 57th Street F train station before the shooting. The Washington Post timestamps the image at 6:15 a.m. Investigators believe that the suspect may have taken a subway from the Upper West Side to midtown.
  • 6:17 a.m. ET: Video at a nearby Starbucks shows the assailant buying a bottle of water and two energy bars roughly 30 minutes before the shooting, according to police.
  • 6:30 a.m. ET: Around 6:30 a.m., surveillance video captured what appears to be the gunman on the phone.
  • 6:44 a.m. ET: Thompson walked toward the Hilton Midtown after leaving his hotel across the street, police said. The masked gunman was “lying in wait” outside the Hilton as Thompson made his way to the hotel to attend his company’s annual investor conference, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The gunman came up behind Thompson and shot him in the back, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said. He then walked toward Thompson and continued to shoot, stopping to clear a gun jam before firing again, Kenny said.

Someone will recognize him, I'm sure of it.
Yeah! This isn't like some of the cases that are huge to us true crime nerds and maybe the state where it happened, but if you ask your parent or barista they've never heard of it and you're shocked (like Abby & Libby for me.)

No, this case is the top story everywhere. A manhunt for a CEO-killer in Midtown? Grisham could have written this and the media can't get enough. And I can't tell you how many people have had a claim denied unjustly by insurance, and even though they would never ever kill someone, or even approve of this happening, this piques their interest. Plus, the suspect isn't like Kohberger or Watts or James Holmes where a small group of deeply disturbed Reddit ladies are able to convince themselves he's attractive; this guy is giving Chalamet and breaking the internet on every social media platform right now, for those of you (wisely) not on the socials.

MassGuy is right. Tick tock.

I am thinking maybe the words written on the bullet casings are red herrings. Just seems a little too on the nose. Maybe the motive is something more personal, but the perp is trying to make it look like it's about insurance.

Likely not connected, but I searched for similar announcements from this account and they seem to be exceedingly rare.

According to Citizen, it’s a police-involved shooting: 2 people shot, suspect in custody. Likely unrelated, but the story is still developing.

I dont think he used a suppressor. Rather, the built in barrel of the gun is designed to function as a suppressor. Not surprisingly, it also looks like one.

ah i see, i was under the impression there was actually a (separate) suppressor on it. So then are these guns just more likely to jam by the way they are built?

The gun used by the shooter in Wednesday’s shocking Midtown slaying appears to match a B&T VP9, an update of the Welrod pistol — a suppressed firearm developed in the Second World War, sources told The Post.

A recent purchase of the gun by the Connecticut-based gunmaker is an investigative lead in the manhunt for the killer, who used an apparently silenced pistol, sources said.

Horrible crime, but intriguing. Get away on a bike. Words on bullet casings.

The Brügger & Thomet VP9 (Veterinary Pistol 9mm) is a manual repeater, magazine fed, integrally-suppressed pistol created by Brügger & Thomet (now B&T) for use as a veterinary pistol for putting down sick and wounded animals. The design is based on the Welrod pistol.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the shooter went to Starbucks unmasked, left a water bottle, and took a Citi bike. He's either the stupidest shooter on the planet or gives zero f*s.

EWR is an international airport...LGA is not. LGA has flights to Canada and that's about it. Most flights to Europe depart in the evening. I think it's highly unlikely he went to the airport before the shooting.
Sure, yes. But the guy could have grabbed a connecting flight through IAD or any other hub to almost anywhere, not necessarily to Europe.
