This is really amazing police work right from the start. How many people visited that Starbucks in the 30 minutes or so? And they picked out his cup?
Judging from the way it was written, I think he tossed it in a public garbage can not too far from the shooting scene, which they saw him do on street camera.

Is this new?

Police said the gunman fled the shooting scene into Central Park on a bicycle. Video surveillance of the park showed that he exited it on the west side without his backpack, according to a law enforcement official. Officers searched the park on Thursday but were unable to find the pack, the official said
Didn't that photo of him on a bicycle, after he exited the park, show him without a back pack?

No. They had something like a thousand officers scouring the park looking for that backpack. To date, they haven’t found it.

John Miller said they searched dumpsters, trash cans, and did a grid search.

They must have missed it, or some opportunistic person grabbed it when they saw it unattended.

Good article. To people wondering how they got the water bottle:

Investigators pulled DNA from an Ethos water bottle that was found in the alleyway of the building that used to house the Ziegfeld Theater, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. It was the same spot where the shooter is believed to have pre-positioned an e-bike used for his getaway and where he dropped a Motorola burner phone, the person said. Police also tested DNA from a Starbucks cup the suspect dropped in a garbage can before he gunned Thompson down.
Bumping this since I still see people thinking police had to go thru multiple trash cans.

But they were able to find the water bottle and coffee cup........
Maybe they had surveillance that showed which trash can he dumped it in?

No security was with BT on this trip.
Big mistake. I checked the websites for the two HC companies I worked for, both have removed BOD and Company officers. Word is everyone's being very carefully and the Corp office has extra security. Both have large contacts with UHC. Moo

Anthem BCBS backtracks
on plan to limit anesthesia services during surgery. This was insane, doctors have been speaking out. How does anyone know how long a surgery will last, potential complications, just crazy the extent large insurance companies are going to.

Could the perp have had an informant among the hotel staff or another guest?
The right employee might be able to offer the perpetrator and say, his spotter(s) a wealth of "usually" type information:

- Usually the big wigs dont stay at the same hotel as the meeting. In fact, from what I have seen, the CEO types usually like either hotel "H", hotel "O", or hotel "T".

- Whether with body guards or walking alone in their thoughts, they usually avoid the main entrance and slip in though a certain side entrance- Yes, I can show it to you...

- CEO type big wigs usually arrive early (they have been early their whole lives- right?). But... they usually dont arrive too early. After all, they are the star of the show. Look for him to be about an hour or so early.

- They are usually easy to spot in the halls. Dressed for business, but whether alone or with an entourage, they are not carrying anything. @Simply Southern great observation. Now that you reminded me, the same is said about military generals.

It's probably fruitless but given we know the suspect rode through Central Park I'm currently looking at the recent visitor photos on park attraction reviews. Never know, we might see someone in the back of a photo somewhere... (Yes I know even new reviews might be old visits but some might not. Yes clutching at straws.)

[ETA: and possibly stashed his backpack]
You never know.

Do we know how long Brian had been in NYC before this happened?
I asked this yesterday and someone answered he'd arrived on Monday, December 2nd.

IMO MOO

With all due respect, an "alleyway" seems equal to a garbage can in my opinion and the article specifically states the coffee cup was dropped in a "garbage can"

My Personal experience- The chance of finding an empty trash can on the street in Manhattan is less than being struck by a meteor with your name engraved on it by aliens. This is truly a lucky break and excellent police work (no kidding).

When they arrived they didn't know he had been to Starbucks or had a cup to find. That was hours later.

Wouldn't the lack of finding the backpack by now indicate that he likely met an accomplice in Central Park?

He arrived Monday.
Why are people saying he arrived Monday? It has been reported that he was in town for 10 days. Am i missing something?

BT arrived Monday. The killer had checked into the hostel 10 days prior.

Maybe he chucked it in the back of that trash truck.

BT arrived Monday. Not the shooter

On one photo with the bike he had the backback on. But that was before the park.
