The backpack was big and grey so that it would be noticed and that’s what LE would be looking for. A prop/diversion.

Once he dumped it, then his all black like everyone else on a bike make him more difficult to find.

Next, he goes to community where women wear a niqab- only eyes visible and he’s invisible again. Not sure what he would do there long term … but could hide easily.

I understand it’s a serious situation and someone died and it’s very sad and I feel horrible for his family.

That said… I literally laughed at the Monopoly money in the backpack. Imagine being a detective and being so excited that you found what you thought is the holy grail and you open it..and it’s full of Monopoly money.
It's a terrible film, full of cliches.

I wouldn’t assume the Monopoly money was left by the killer. It seems more like a troll who found the bag did it. It was in the park for two days remember. The TikTok generation seems to think this is a game. More so than the killer who was professional and methodical but not frivolous.
Except for the messages on the casings…

Monopoly money fits.

Yeah, like escaping the crime scene via 6th Ave, which is also called Avenue of the AMERICAS and the escaping the city via the GEORGE WASHINGON Bridge Bus Terminal.

We could go on and on, I bet.

Ugh, kind of overlooked this because it seems so obvious but you’re right. This really feels like a parody of a Cold War operation.

There are more than enough Americans who share this sentiment. There is no need to look to foreigners!
Would he be this confident if he were on American soil? With those two public photographs, I think LE would have had plenty of calls supplying his name by now, with some assertive callers. This guy was exceptionally cautious about getting out of NYC safely but fearless about all the evidence that emerged later. That makes him less likely to be in America, I think.

We went through the insurance battle when my twin sister was diagnosed with breast cancer when we were 31, so I do get the agony of dealing with an absolutely inscrutable insurance company that is impervious to the human suffering it engenders.

Nevertheless I am just furious about this tragedy.

I’m aware that this is anthropomorphic, but I feel that NYC itself has been insulted. (I don’t know if my fellow New Yorkers will agree).

This killer murdered a man, a father.

His attitude is to punk the police, punk us citizens, and is doing it all with insouciance. Laughing at the rest of us awaiting his capture.

That he’s become a folk hero is unnerving to me. This despite the battle we endured getting my sister’s insurance company to pay what it promised.

The suspect figured he’d get an audience but I doubt even he anticipated people would be considering him to be some legend now.

I do think he’s out of the country but I hope he’s caught. Soon.

Actually I think it would be good to see all of the things that could be a message together. The ones you mentioned here were not on my radar.

But he wrote messages on the bullet casings, so the Monopoly money fits with that kind of gesture. I think it makes the most sense that the money in the shooter's backpack was left by the shooter.

The Monopoly money in the backpack just blew my mind if it’s true.

I googled what it could mean symbolically… this is what I found:

“In a broader metaphorical sense, Monopoly money can symbolize artificial or symbolic value, representing wealth or resources within a controlled and fictional system. It reminds us that the value of money depends on the rules and context of the system in which it operates.”

Moo- this echos the idea of insurance institution deciding how and when claims are paid for upon their discretion/rules only.

Just found this interesting.
I asked ChatGTP the same:

Symbolic or Statement Purpose

• Protest or Satire: Monopoly money is sometimes used as a symbol to protest economic policies, corruption, or inequality, implying that “money isn’t real” or criticizing how it’s used.

• Message About Value: Someone might have used Monopoly money to convey a point about the lack of value or authenticity in a situation.

Unless the amount of monopoly money found equals that of an expired claim, I lean away from the theory that guy has a personal vendetta (due to a denied claim) from UHC. Between all of the theatrics, the shooting in a highly public location, leveraging "working class" transportation and lodging despite having expensive gear, all of the "fun" hints he's planted.. I think he's some sort egomaniac who picked a cause célèbre that fits into his ideology and chose his assassination target to cast himself as some sort of modern day Robin Hood. I wouldn't be too terribly surprised if he's a fan of the Joker, either.

I also wouldn't be too terribly surprised if Thompson was a - somewhat - random target. It might turn out that he wanted to murder any insurance executive. Even though he was the CEO of United Healthcare, he wasn't the executive of UnitedHealth Group, and didn't seem to have a large public facing presence.

Is this proven to be accurate, Monopoly money in the backpack?

I did see the link but otherwise I’m not seeing it in mainstream news yet.

If this is true—-wow. That is a real “screw you” message to LE.

Very dystopian. Makes me think of the “Joker” movie.

NBC is reporting it

Dec 7 2024
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the “net is tightening” on the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting suspect as the manhunt for the executive’s assassin entered its fourth day. The FBI announced late Friday that it has joined the NYPD in the search for the suspect. NewsNation's Nancy Loo has more.
