What are the rights of someone in the case of a police officer just coming up to you and asking for ID/searching you? Just genuinely curious (and making sure the perp doesn't have something to argue in court that gets him off). Did they go up to him and say we suspect you were in a crime, what is your name, let us see your ID? How did they know it was fake so quickly? go to the patrol vehicle and run it/call it in?
police can definitely detain you if you refuse to ID yourself and they suspect you of a crime

The handwritten manifesto found on the person of the man detained in Altoona criticized health care companies for putting profits above care, according to a senior law enforcement official

I agree with the wanting to get caught, unless they sent an armed unit to the McDonalds he could have easily got out his gun and shot the officers or even if they were armed gone the suicide by cop route, instead he calmly complied

Now he will have his day in court and be able to tell the world his manifesto

I'm waiting for leaks about what's in the quasi-manifesto.
Same. I just want the gist, though. I really don't want to actually read it.

"The video, which has not previously been seen publicly, appears to support the police narrative that the shooter targeted Thompson because he loitered while others wandered by."

What the heck does that mean? That he wasn't targeted because he was the CEO of UHC?
I think it means the shooter was waiting on the sidewalk, allowing numerous people to walk by him, and then he only made a move toward BT after recognizing that it was BT.

Not the best word usage in that article.

Long time reader, first time poster:
If the PA guy is the right guy, it is absolutely baffling to me that someone who was so thoughtful and meticulous in planning their hit - THEN turns around and a) stays in the NE b) keeps THE weapon and fake ID's on them. Wow!

For those who believe he needed to get caught for the notoriety or for the opportunity to explain himself ...why not just mail a 'manifesto' to the NYT?

Former LEO, and this is one of the most intriguing 'stranger' murders I have seen in a long time. Thanks for letting me join your community.
Moo… I am personally just baffled by this. I didn’t think he was a professional hit man or some master criminal. I did get the impression though that he was intelligent and a detailed planner due to all the effort upfront and messages both literal and metaphorical left behind. Seemed as though someone like that wouldn’t still be carrying the murder weapon. On a bus.

not the apprehension I was expecting.

I wonder, if in his writings, he had a list of potential targets.

Target list, or possibly leaked internal documents proving X already knew about situation Y and DELAYED or DENIED certain details until after certain individuals disposed of their shares of stock.

Welcome!!!!
Thank you for your career in LE.

Maybe the adrenaline rush had dwindled away for him by now and he got sloppy or complacent?

Just guessing.
And he's totally exhausted. But, still, this doesn't explain his lack of pre-planning for his life after leaving NYC.

Looking recognizable, being in a McDonalds, staying in the NE, keeping fake IDs including one already known to be used by the murderer, keeping the gun, I keep thinking that something isn't adding up.

For some reason unknown to us, could he have planned to get caught within such a short time of the murder? I don't know . . . JMO

I think it was a scheduled bus stop. He has to eat, no choice but where the bus stops.

Just a hunch, not fact.

True but if it were me, not even a fresh Quarter Pounder couldn't drag me off of that bus. Bada-ba-babah <yes, I had to sing that out loud while I typed it thanks to @Vaderman >

Why give LE the same fake ID? Surely if he had one, he had access to more than one? This whole thing just feels ridiculously OTT and I'm not convinced there isn't somebody else involved. I swear I am the most anti-conspiracy, Occam's poster around, but this seems off to me.

I don’t know but I’m willing to bet he spent a little time last night posting on this thread. Lol. people on last night will know what I’m referring to.
I'd love to know more about this, could you elaborate? What sorts of posts? I've wondered about this the whole time.

I'd like to know how much cash (US currency, not Monopoly)he was found with. I assume he's been using cash only for several weeks. The amount of cash might be indicative of how much further his travel plans were.

I want info about how the arrest went down. So curious. Did they clear McDonalds? Haul him off the bus? Casually walk up and say, "Hey, what's up? What brings you to Altoona?"

Did the perp panic? Or accept the questioning? Did he talk or refuse?

I truly wonder what his plan was to do now, maybe he was just going to keep going until he was inevitably caught

I think he’s going to be like your standard assassin. Some creepy loner weirdo who people who know him would describe as “odd.”

We’re not talking about some well adjusted guy with a wide circle of friends.

I initially thought he was an outlier in that regard because of how well planned this was. The alleged manifesto means he’s just like the rest, only a better planner.
Agreed. 100%

Wonder what his destination was.

Will the local PD possibly release something regarding the local charges first? That might be the quickest way we get to a name and a pic. Looking at the local Altoona PD page it all looks very quaint I'm not sure I've hit the right one.

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to supress the contents of the manifesto as much as possible, only giving "broad strokes" as to confirm motive.

They also recovered a computer.

Local law enforcement is telling NYPD it looks like their suspect. They also are telling NYPD one of the fake IDs in his possession matches the one the suspect allegedly displayed at Upper West Side Hostel, the sources added.

Law enforcement are also asking Greyhound for its passenger manifest, to see what name the man being questioned gave them.

Numerous NYPD officials are en route to Altoona, which is in central Pennsylvania, about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh.”
