Sounds like they got him! Someone at McDonald's identified him and phoned it in. The guy has the same fake ID as the gunman.

ETA: Sorry I just realized that's already been posted. This thread is moving SO FAST!! My apologies!!

More details:

A person of interest was nabbed Monday in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompsonbusted possibly trying to use a fake ID in a McDonald’s, law-enforcement sources said.

The man — who sources said is being eyed for the coldblooded, targeted execution in front of a Manhattan hotel last week — allegedly had a manifesto on him when he was taken into custody by cops in Altoona, Pa.

He also had a gun, silencer, four fake IDs and other items “consistent” with what authorities were looking for in the case, sources said.

Law enforcement were still trying to figure out the man’s real identity, sources said.

He was nabbed on a tip called into local cops, who then apprehended him, sources said.

Rbm.
Thanks for the updates in this case.

I want to know what was in that manifesto !
Possibly a description of the crime he was going to commit ?
Or, if written after Brian was murdered, a sort of confession and motive ?
Omo.

Person of interest arrested in Pennsylvania on local charges ‘caught with manifesto’ and ghost gun
The man arrested on local charges in Altoona, Pennsylvania, possibly over giving police false identification, was said to be carrying a manifesto, law enforcement sources said.

According to the New York Post, he allegedly had a so-called manifesto on him when he was taken into custody by police on on Monday morning.

Investigators also believe he was carrying a ghost gun — the Frankenstein weapon being put together with parts sold online — that matches the gun believed to have been used in the shooting, a senior law enforcement official told The New York Times

Now I'm bummed that I went to bed early. :)
Me too — would like to see what was it that looked like a perp post.
If they say he’s 26 they must know his true identity by now. I’d thought 20-21. Beautiful face — I wonder if his parents are just normal hardworking people (whatever their cultural background) and are going to be devastated.

And just when it seemed it couldn't get any more bizarre! He takes 5 days to travel 300km and doesn't find time to dispose of gun and ID. WTAF!?!? If so he wants to get caught or at least wasnt seriously considering getting away with it

The man detained in the McDonald’s had written a “manifesto,” according to two law enforcement officials.

For those who believe he needed to get caught for the notoriety or for the opportunity to explain himself ...why not just mail a 'manifesto' to the NYT?

Former LEO, and this is one of the most intriguing 'stranger' murders I have seen in a long time. Thanks for letting me join your community.
I believe he planned enough to minimize getting while carrying out his goals, all the while knowing that getting caught was a very distinct possibility in the 21st century. A realistic approach.

The man being questioned by police in connection to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was picked up in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee thought he resembled the man in the NYPD’s photos and called the cops, multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the situation tell CNN.

Altoona police responded to the call and picked up the man, who they say is 26 years old, and searched him.

In the search, they found a gun with a suppressor — a device that muffles the sound of a firearm — like that used in the homicide and multiple fake IDs, including one that the NYPD believes was used by the suspect in New York City, the officials say.

The man is under arrest on charges in connection with the gun recovered by police, according to a law enforcement official.

The suspect was in possession of some documents that investigators also want to examine as potentially relating to motive, though further details on the documents were not clear.

Altoona police are waiting for NYPD detectives, who are on their way

NYPD now currently en route to Altoona per CNN.com. Presumably they would only actually go if there's been even more confirmation this is the right guy than what's been reported so far, yes?

Did anyone else notice in the getaway timeline that the e-bike disappeared in one block. Just one block.

How have they not found the bike? 2 minutes… one block. No bike found. Just crazy. Even if stolen they have cameras showing enough of that area to see who took it. At least I’d imagine they do. Based off how they caught the suspect on camera in other area in and around that block.

  • 6:56 a.m. — suspect leaves the park at West 77th Street and Central Park West, still on the bicycle.
  • 6:58 a.m. — He passes another camera on 85th Street and Columbus Avenue, still on the bicycle.
  • 7 a.m. — He's at 86th Street, no longer with the bicycle.
  • 7:04 a.m. — He enters a taxi northbound at 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
I understand that e-bikes are big targets for theft. Would it make sense if he conveniently left the e-bike someplace where it would be easy for a new owner to acquire it? During the early hours after the murder, everyone thought he was on a CityBike, so privately owned e-bikes weren't likely on the investigation radar screen. Someone decides to take the bike, and poof, it's gone.

I wonder if he truly wanted/expected to get away. I'm not sure what the motive was, but look what he's accomplished: people are selling and buying shirts with the sketch of him with the gun pulled and the words "deny, defend, depose" splattered across it. People are cheering him on. People are wildly discussing the health insurance policies. In my opinion, it doesn't matter if he was caught. He's lit the powder keg.

Long time reader, first time poster:
If the PA guy is the right guy, it is absolutely baffling to me that someone who was so thoughtful and meticulous in planning their hit - THEN turns around and a) stays in the NE b) keeps THE weapon and fake ID's on them. Wow!

For those who believe he needed to get caught for the notoriety or for the opportunity to explain himself ...why not just mail a 'manifesto' to the NYT?

Welcome!!!!
Thank you for your career in LE.

Maybe the adrenaline rush had dwindled away for him by now and he got sloppy or complacent?

Just guessing.

Would it, though? Chain outlets are more likely to have cameras and trained staff. Maybe an independent coffee shop or cafe would be safer, if available.
And apparently he didn't plan to change his appearance so that people wouldn't connect him with looking like that guy that killed BT. With all of his prior planning, I do not understand how he could not have significantly changed his appearance.

Were there case developments last night in the thread that are still there today?
There were no case developments last night. Just speculation posts etc

Red emphasis mine.
If this turns out to be the killer ...

Hope the tipster receives the reward !
They've earned it.
Imo.

Suggest he wasn't done with it yet JMO Makes me wonder what other victims he had in mind.

I still can't get past the monopoly money in the back pack bit. Like who IS this dude? He's so clever stupid I am left shaking my head.

The 26-year-old was picked up at a McDonald’s in Altoona after an employee thought he looked like the man in New York Police Department photos and called police, the sources said. He had fake IDs, including one NYPD believes was used by the killing suspect in New York, they said.

plural fake IDs, the gun and suppressor still on him.
I wonder, if in his writings, he had a list of potential targets.

Lesson for law enforcement though- this guy would have gotten away with this if he had not shown his face to anyone and not left any DNA at the scene. Both of which he could easily have done. In spite of having 40,000 cameras in NYC it was only because he screwed up that they got his picture, that led to him being captured.
Yep, and literally due to an observant citizen calling in the tip, not necessarily because detectives were hot on his trail and “tightening the net”.

Not discounting investigation efforts of course.

Def leads to the fact this guy was almost looking to be caught. Or just not fully baking his plan.

So he may have assembled this gun himself, which means scouring purchase records would have been a dead end.

The man who was detained at McDonald’s showed the police the same fake New Jersey identification that the man believed to be the gunman presented when he checked into a hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Nov. 24, a senior law enforcement official said.

The man had a gun, a silencer and false identification cards similar to those they believe the killer used in New York, according to one of the law enforcement officials and a person briefed on the investigation. The man is said to have been in
possession of a gun like the one used in the shooting — possibly a so-called ghost gun, assembled from parts purchased online.
