Good point. His grandparents had 10 children, and they each had children of their own. That may be a lot of people to split up the wealth of the grandparents. They might be well off, but not necessarily rolling in dough.
Google results show me that spinal fusions can cost up to $150–250K. Maybe his fam has money for one surgery, but not enough for a second one, if insurance didn’t deem a revision necessary.

Then he amplifies his own situation and extends it to the “lived experience” of the whole “American people.” (A sentiment that may not be entirely inaccurate, IMO.)

Mangione made his first court appearance on Monday night to face charges relating to the killing of Thompson outside the annual UnitedHealthcare investors meeting in New York. In addition to the murder charge, he faces counts over the criminal possession of a weapon and silencer.

Police said that they arrested him in possession of a so-called ghost gun – that could have been produced by a 3D printer – and a suppressor.

Mangione was largely silent during the court hearing, though he did speak out to dispute the account being presented by prosecutors. They had said he was carrying about $10,000 in cash, and asserted that the bag he was carrying had the ability to block cellphone signals, which all pointed to his sophisticated criminal planning.

“I’d like to correct two things,” Mangione said, according to CNN. “First, I don’t know where any of that money came from – I’m not sure if it was planted. And also, that bag was waterproof, so I don’t know about criminal sophistication.”
That air of superiority… “I’d like to correct two things…”

need to look at the video again, however, iirc, he whipped his neck around [turned it around] and I felt once he saw a crowd decided to show off?
Yes.
He definitely looked around and behind him as he was being led in and saw that he had a captive audience before he shouted.

His mother reported him missing in November. If I were in her shoes, I'd be grateful to know that he was alive and somewhere he wouldn't be able to hurt himself, at least temporarily. Just my opinion.
Yes but knowing he is alive in these circumstances? Any hope that he may have been alive in some understandable and less horrific circumstance (like off on an extended backpacking trip or whatever) is out the window.

tbf, was he expected to shout in the void? Of course he wanted record keepers.

Imagine how his relative (cousin?) feels, he's a republican state office holder.
Very sad that his cousin has to endure this. I hope his constituents don't judge him based upon the actions of someone else.

I highly doubt that he had any trouble picking up women, to be honest. He's the absolute opposite of an incel, from what I can tell. He even had the desk girl at the hostel flirting with him. Incels don't get that.
I think the "incel" / involuntary part is his back issues interfering with intimacy, as was alluded to by a friend from his past.

I'm not getting vibes of debilitating, chronic back pain from him, quite honestly!
Same, I am sure he has had discomfort but he managed to sleep 10 nights in uncomfortable beds in a hostel, carry an ebike battery around and other things in backpack

This case is going to become a major drama.

Just caught “an insult to the intelligence of the American people…”
I don’t believe he wanted to be caught as was earlier suggested. He may have mental issues, but he knew what he was doing.IMO

The X-ray image is from a profile photo he had pinned to one of his accounts. The photo with officer holding his neck is a still image pulled from today's Reuters video, as he entered the courthouse, shouting angrily.

We'll see how arrogant he is when the folks at Rikers "welcome" him!! :D
I think he’ll be just fine, if he’s not in solitary. His fans will put so much money on his books, he’ll be the CEO of commissary in his pod.

Appears to be a radicalized psychopathic murderer to me.

I don't think many mothers would be prefer their baby to be dead over being in jail. If she did recognize him in the photos, she may have been worried like many of us that he'd be shot when the police found him. Now she knows that he's safe for the moment.

I thought the surgery appeared to be lower back, not the neck. Am I wrong?

Holy mackerel, check the heavy grip on his surgically repaired neck.
It was his lower back that was repaired. This is just pain compliance via pressure point. It’s a standard move and completely harmless.

Was that just a temporary thing immediately after the accident or the surgery, though? I find it difficult to believe his injury/surgery prevented that if he is physically able to walk across the street, shoot someone multiple times then ride off at high speed on a bike all whilst lugging a backpack around.
I had asked myself why he chose an e-bike on a previous thread, and someone answered that it was probably because it was faster.
Come to think of it, it's more likely he chose an e-bike because he couldn't use a normal bike even if he wanted, due to his back pain.

MOO
