If that’s the timeline-July surgery on the east coast, flies to San Francisco after and then cuts all communication-after a major surgery and you can’t reach your kid for 4 months? WTH
And a trip to Japan somewhere in there, iirc?

I understand that his family isn’t speaking about this right now. It’s just that the only thing I’m seeing on his surgery is what he told people, and what he posted on Reddit (along with his other ailments). If a friend had said he went to see him in the hospital or at home when he was recovering from spine surgery, I might be more apt to buy in. Did he have the surgery in Hawaii, or did he fly home for it? California? The missing timeline and his descent into whatever state he was in is hard to understand.
The Reddit posts were to a group of people who suffered from the same back issues as he was experiencing. He posted multiple times encouraging others to have the surgery (this was after he stated he had his surgery in July.). He also stated he was able to stop taking meds 8 or 9 days after surgery. Just saying, I believe he was truthful in this setting as he gave many details and seemed sympathetic and helpful to his fellow sufferers. He flew from Hawaii to the East Coast to have the surgery, according his former roommate.

All families are different, of course. But I can't imagine a scenario in which I wouldn't be bedside when my son (also in his 20s) would be having major spinal surgery. It's odd. But, again, all families and dynamics are different.

Wow, what a difference in this pic and the smiling hostel one. Yikes!

For sure.

The cognitive dissonance between the good-looking, popular, wealthy, surfer dude valedictorian vs. this guy maniacally baring his teeth at the police, eyes glaring, is difficult to fathom.

It really does seem to be that something triggered a Before and After in the life of LM.

If he did have back surgery then I don’t see what the primary complaint is against the insurance company. If that surgical X-ray is his then he wasn’t denied the operation.

I’ve known people who’ve had back surgery which somewhat alleviated the problem, and others who didn’t respond as well. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

But in that ferocious face, I can indeed see the killer.

Agreed. Like so many others who may have mental health issues AND used illegal/legal drugs, it is unfortunate but he still is responsible for his actions. I feel like the trend in the country (possibly the world) is toward using substances to accentuate/deaden/entertain/whatever when these young people are so vulnerable.
He is, I agree, still responsible for his actions, just wish there were more preventable and other ways for helping individuals and families cope with the traumas they are experiencing before it gets to …well, this! Lives destroyed is such a sad occurrence that has been happening forever..wish that wasn’t the case..

I'm in my late 50's and was told to wait as long as possible to have surgery. I couldn't take the pain, had surgery about 2 years after I was told to wait. The outcome wasn't perfect, not pain free but it cut the pain in half. I still need pain meds if I'm doing any physical type of work. I'd say to someone young, don't push it, wait as long as you can, do the therapy then exercises at home. Avoid anything that strains the lower back.
I learned from experience through my wife's herniated disc, that the one year outcome is about the same for the surgical and non surgical treatments. Surgery will usually get a person back to work more quickly so that's the deciding factor. The exception is severe cases such as when there is bladder or bowel problems, or likely permanent nerve damage. My wife didn't work, so she was advised to wait it out. It was misery for a while, but after about a year she was fine. Now she acts like it never happened, so I'm concerned she'll injure herself again. Average people would benefit from more knowledge about spinal health. Relating this back to this case, he may have pushed for surgery when he could have chosen other approaches.

There was an expert (Former FBI) on CNN either last night or this morning who explained some of the possible processes that LM went through in order to make the choice to murder BT. He said it didn't appear that LM was the kind of person to murder or even harm others. Nothing in his background indicates that. When some people like him become radicalized and have a strong urge to remedy the wrongs in some way, they are usually reluctant to resort to murder. These are the kind of people who would normally never harm others, but one of the factors that usually tips the scale is validation. If the killer is trying to talk themselves into killing someone over a social cause, they usually do it if they feel there is some validation from others who have been harmed or believe in the cause. In this case, LM may have talked himself into it because there were (and are) so many people who are so tired of unfair abuse from the insurance industry. So many people who have been calling out for change and getting nowhere. The killer's feeling of validation is usually what tips the scale towards murder or other drastic action.

I tend to agree with this, considering LM had no criminal history, no record of bullying or abusing others. He may have done it because he thought it was the only option and that others would agree and be helped by his actions. Mental health problems were also a part of it.

All of his friends say that he was so kind and such a ‘good example’ to others. It’s sad to see the destruction.
It’s really the only thing that works for me.

There’s just nothing else that explains it, based on his history.

And more and more friends that speak about him being an exceptional person, student, friend and athlete does fit with this being totally out of character for him.

It was said that he was never political, combative or negative. He was very pleasant to be with. ‘Everything that is being said is the opposite to what we know’.

I see people referring to LM peeing his pants. Was that when he was apprehended by police?

(snipped for focus)

He reminds me of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

We don’t even know if he did.

The photo of him in the cell certainly gives that appearance, but there’s no way of knowing for sure.

Can I read the link?

I'd like to read it too and am quite skeptical about a McDonald's customer having this degree of intelligence on the situation.

Makes more sense that LM was travelling by bus, not hanging out in that PA town.

Not sure why you received a paywall.

Paraphrase:

LM living in HI
-- Earlier this year, LM disengaged.
-- In Nov. 2024, his mother filed a missing person report in San Francisco, saying she had not spoken to him since July

-- Friends pleaded with him on X to return their messages

-- Nobody has heard from you in months, and apparently your family is looking for you [one person posted on X in October]

-- The mother told LE she last spoke with her son in July, and he told her he worked for TrueCar in its offices (San Francisco)

-- But TrueCar had shuttered its SF office by then

-- The company confirmed that LM has not been an employee of their company since 2023.

  • A friend and former roommate of LM, stated that LM was in debilitating pain due to his spine being misaligned.
His lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve.
He was told by LM, he (LM) suffered a back injury and wanted to build strength.
After a basic surf lesson, he was in bed for about a week.
LM needed surgery, which weighed on him.
It prevented him from being intimate.
After six months, he left to see a doctor on the East Coast

The friend hasn’t communicated with LM since August 2023, when he texted him to ask how the back surgery went.

LM sent him X-rays. It looked heinous, with giant screws going into his spine.

LM said he would fill him in in person. Back in HI as soon as I can, need to figure out some spine stuff here first.

-- A few calls to LM between March and June 2024 to check in, went unanswered.

-- In late February, it appears he spent some time in Japan according to a post on X from a Japanese professional poker player, Obara J.

-- LM made comments about Japan’s falling birth rate, saying the country needed to encourage natural human interaction, s.x physical fitness and spirituality

In July, a friend asked him on X if he was going to attend the man’s upcoming wedding

The doctor on Court Tv said from the xrays it looks like a botched surgery. He described it with the xray.
