What’s ironic is that he seemed to idolize the Unabomber, who also sought change through violence.

LM is smart enough to know that good old Teddy boy failed, but attempted to do the same type of thing.

So how he had any expectation he’d accomplish his goal is beyond me. But perhaps that goes to his mental state.
Maybe he believed the change wouldn't come from him directly but believed it would encourage more people to take action.

The weapon, IDs, manifesto and notebook in his backpack make me believe that he was waiting to be caught. It seems too odd to leave all this up to chance. He had all the evidence in the bag and we know from the prior occasion that he purposefully got rid of the old backpack, jacket and monopoly money so why stop there?
He was likely going to continue murdering.

I’ll withhold my complex personal thoughts on the state of healthcare in the US, the ethical dilemma of billionaires, and this case being resolved. I have to say that as someone who watched my mother lose her joy, her ability to work, hell, her ability to get off the couch due to an L4 injury - I deeply empathize with LM, although I cannot get on board with killing those we don’t agree with (at least extrajudicially…)

That being said, has parallel construction been brought up in this thread? I am finding the McDonalds story somewhat difficult to believe. More believable, IMO, is the police using a stingray system to skim many phones, ID’ing LM, then working back to a plausible way they discovered him. I know a faraday bag was mentioned (I have one myself), but LM denies that it’s a faraday bag, only a dry bag… IMO MOO.
Cell site simulators require a warrant to use. They would also generally have to know who they were looking for, what devices were associated with them, and the general area they are in. If they already had all that information, a warrant would be readily obtainable and parallel reconstruction would be totally unnecessary. The premise doesn’t make a ton of sense.

“What do you do? You wack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention. It’s targeted, precise, and doesn’t risk innocents,” was one of the passages written in the notebook, the officials said.
"bean-counter".... "wack".... does not sound like the nice guy everyone who knew him knew

What if he didn’t want to use violence, but to create the end goal he had to take Brian’s life. Who is hurting right now? UHC, and its investors. The very people he was on his way to meet with. Who is not hurting? Anyone that may have been betting against the stock.

He “apologized for strife or trauma’s - but it had to be done”

I think Luigi sees this about money and capitalism, and he is prepared to take his learnings to the inside. HE couldn’t figure out where he fit in the civilized world.

Yes, his strange fascination with Ted Kaczynski, who was also highly educated and went off the grid and later diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Strangely Kaczynski died of suicide in prison June 2023 (suffering from late-stage cancer) about the same time as LM seemed to go off the grid.

ETA: someone corrected me that LM went off the grid June 2024

since when is a Faraday bag evidence of anything? there are all sorts of bags and wallets available to prevent people from skimming your credit cards.... I find that odd. His passport and especially the gun are more damning IMO.

I think he read the Unibomber manifesto as far back as 2022 while he was living at 'Surfbreak' in Hawaii. Does this indicate he was in the pre-planning phase as early as 2022?

According to the NYPD his last known address was in Hawaii, and I assume this is where the gun components were mailed to.

Every day this world gets more depressing. There are tons of people on social media who have identified the McDonalds employee and are posting her photo and information and legit calling for her to be "taken care of" for snitching.

F*cking depraved.

I can't imagine he transported the gun from Hawaii, as that would involve taking it on a plane. I think he built it somewhere on the mainland after his surgery (likely in Pennsylvania or Maryland). We know he disappeared for a while, so the question is where he disappeared to.

I thought he went off the grid in June 2024? That’s the last time he tweeted and the reports say he was missing for months.

Police say it's unclear if Mangione's family or friends recognized his wanted photos and reported him

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the Dec. 4 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was ultimately taken into custody thanks to a McDonald’s employee who recognized him and called the police.

This morning on “Morning Joe,” NYPD officials were pressed on whether any of Mangione’s family members or friends recognized him in photos released by police and contacted authorities when he was on the run.

“Post-arrest investigation here, I think all these things will be asked and answered in time,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell. “When the picture went out, the thought process from everyone was, like, if someone knows this person, you say, ‘Hey, that’s John.’ That’ll all come out.”

“I think we had over 400 tips that came in. We’re still vetting each one of those tips. But thank God for the customer that was in the McDonald’s,” Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said.
