in that article it says
"Witty encouraged employees to “tune out” the criticism of the insurance giant, insisting that the overwhelming backlash “does not reflect reality.”
I wonder if Brian Thompson's death reflected reality to him.?
Witty is correct.

Am not trivialising pain and discomfort but LM ran across the road to shoot BT, ran into an alley to board an ebike, carried an ebike battery which is pretty heavy, in his backpack, his back problems can’t have been that bad that they are an excuse to commit cold blooded murder

Yeah, just saying I wouldn't put it past LM to 'milk' this for all it's worth.
It's not like he can't get any meds ever, whilst incarcerated !
Some prisoners have friends or family who will send $$ or whatever.
LM could live a long life yet, whatever the outcome of the trial, unlike his victim.
Omo.

Why willful ignorance? He hadn’t been provided with evidence identifying LM as the NY shooter.

It’s unfortunate that people bash defense lawyers for doing their job and protecting their client’s rights. We’re not all awful!
Agreed! If I’m ever accused of a crime, I want a smart, resourceful, talented and experienced defense lawyer! I want someone who would be called ugly names on WS! I’d never hire a defense lawyer who gave way my rights before they were eliminated by due process. Defense lawyers don’t weaken our justice system, they strengthen it. Even in cases where someone is glaringly, undoubtedly guilty. Welcome to the fun!

He would have been 25 on the date of the accident.

Thanks. Hmm.. so he could have still been on his parent’s insurance at the time of that ER visit. It wasn’t until just after he turned 26 he disappeared it seems.

So if he was on their insurance for the ER visit, would any required medical follow up visits have been covered due to it being a pre-existing event/condition, or does insurance cut you off specifically on the birthday?
Anyone have a clear explanation for those of us not in the field?

I posted this in the last thread, but I think its worth sharing again.

As a society, we find it shocking that a wealthy, highly educated, intelligent, attractive, young white man, with no apparent history of violence, would meticulously plan and carry out a brutal assassination. But if his actions are viewed through the lens of the Pathway to Violence, LM is not unique or special in any way.

I don't believe LM should be elevated above other criminals whose acts began with a grievance and ended in a planned, violent attack. That is his cohort now; he is not exceptional among those peers. He is essentially a home-grown terrorist who happens to espouse a philosophy that seems more palatable (to some) than that of others like him.

We may never have a satisfying answer as to what "flipped the switch" in his mind, allowing his possibly very legitimate grievances to morph into violent ideation and progressing from there.

There may have been mental illness issues in the mix, but it seems like a rather fast onset if that is the case (based on what we have heard so far from friends who knew him).

His nomadic lifestyle provided a protective bubble for the perseveration on his grievances to fester. In terms of distancing from friends and family in the months leading to the attack, I wonder if this was due to him slowly becoming consumed with violent ideation and planning and he didn't want anyone around to notice.

Luigi Mangione's school friend didn't recognize him in photos , says ' Italians in New York are a dime a dozen'

By Ronny Reyes
A high school friend of accused UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione said he didn’t recognize him because there are a lot of “Italians in New York.”

Fred Leatherbury, who attended the private Gilman School in Baltimore with Mangione, told Fox & Friends that it never occurred to him that his old friend could’ve been the suspect wanted in a five-day manhunt for Brian Thompson.

“When something so large… happens nationally, I automatically disregard that it could be anybody I know, just out of instinct,” he told host Steve Doocy. “And the thing that I remember about Luigi, if anything, is his really distinct, curly hair.

“And in all the security camera footage, all you saw was him with a hat or a hood on, so that wasn’t a connection that I was making,” he added.
“And of course Italians in New York are a dime a dozen—so just the jaw structure alone, the face, that wasn’t a judgment I was rushing to make. I brushed it off, to be honest.”

Kenny told CBS New York that the motive might have been related to an accident that sent Mangione to an emergency room on July 4, 2023.

Question: When did Luigi turn 26?

Thats what I thought, that his injury was from a car accident and the surfing just aggravated it. I cannot remember where I read that so I didnt bring it up. They must have got his medical records.

MOO any point this young man was trying to make will not be understandable by anyone because his point is the product of a very disordered mind. MOO We are dealing with a person who is seriously mentally ill.

ETA people who are experiencing psychosis can exhibit erratic physical movements that are outside of their control. So his movements to me don't indicate he fakes having or having had a real spinal injury or condition. IME DM Headline was exactly what I would expect. Meant to grab attention and not based on fact. Headline read "Luigi Mangione's disturbing claim about cruel way his mother made him eat" where the article reads: Her recalled how his mother Kathleen Zannino Mangione made him eat steak with his right hand 'out of adherence to social norms.' which says nothing about complaining or cruelty.

Do I hope Mr. Mangione receives consequences for taking a life? Absolutely, he should be tried for murder. But IMO he is no narcissist, no hero, no villain, none of those things. He is IMO most likely severely mentally ill and not a safe person to be in society. Just as I didn't think to myself "Good serves him right" when Brian Thompson was murdered, so will I not create a super villain out of a man I think is very ill and a danger to himself and others.
Agree. IMO, he is likely mentally ill. There are so many better ways to bring attention to our massive health care problems in the US. LM was smart and had resources to potentially bring this issue to light in a positive way where together people could address the issue and find solutions. Instead, his actions suggest that he wasn't of his right mind.

I thought he looked ME/Arab in the cab photo. (Leaning more towards Arab ) It was the brows.

This won’t help in the future.

According to FBI rules, a tipster can’t nominate themselves to collect the reward — meaning the employee would have to be put forward by an investigating agency.

Is spondylolisthesis the same thing as “slipped disc”? That’s the term I have heard before.
No, it’s very different. The disc is jelly like material between the vertebrae. That can protrude and press on nerves - but often shrinks back over time. ‘Listhesis’ is when the body of the vertebra itself displaces in relation to its neighbour.

Seriously sounds like an insurance claim process. JMO

Wow, harsh -- Andrew Witty the CEO of the insurer’s parent company, defended its practices in order to “guard against” what he called “unnecessary care in an address to employees just days after the shocking execution of UnitedHealthcare CEO -- Source: UnitedHealth CEO says insurer will continue to prevent ‘unnecessary care’ in leaked video as sick trolls warn, ‘Dude’s next’
Insurance companies shouldn’t be in a position to dictate what type of care or procedures are necessary for a patient’s wellbeing. Jmo

Seriously. I don't have words. He could have said tons of other things. Very poor choice to make these kinds of comments. Displaying insensitivity and zero emotional intelligence. IMO

Disgusting, given the heroic worker has had their name and other details posted online and may be assassinated themselves it would be outrageous if petty bureaucrats hid behind loopholes not to reward them.

NEW YORK - A person walking their dog in Central Park found a ziplock bag of bullets in the bushes on Tuesday, which police believe is tied to Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson.

FOX 5 NY has exclusively learned that police say the person was walking near East 81st and 85th Street when they saw the bag, noticing writing on it that mirrors markings found on shell casingsin Midtown the morning of Thompson’s shooting.

The writing references "deny defend," echoing a phrase used to describe how insurers dodge claim payouts
