I've long believed that Malehya was quietly cooperating with police. While all the vitriolic fervor of online comments criticized her for leaving, not considering the potential that she was *fleeing from danger*.

When there's a serious matter going to end up in a trial, people are advised to keep quiet. Not just to protect the investigation, but also the trial. If a comment in a news quote has a slight difference from later testimony, the defence will use contraction to sow doubt.

This woman doesn't owe anyone her trauma. No matter how much we all want to know what happened.

I don't go by feelings, or assumptions, but by statistics and patterns. And everything I know about patterns and statistics regarding rural Nova Scotia, poverty, and misogyny... Made the stepfather a statistically likely suspect, barring evidence otherwise.

Edit to add: Daniel supposedly had subsequent girlfriend(s). So while the charges fit description of events reported by Malehya, I wouldn't assume her to be the victim in these charges. Until she chooses to disclose as such.

“Malehya said he (Martell) would try to block her, hold her down and once he pushed her,” one of the documents says. “She said he would also take her phone from her when she tried to call her mom, which would sometimes be physical and hurt.”

When reached by phone on Jan. 15, Martell denied the allegations, saying they are part of a narrative designed to make him look evil.

“I never abused Malehya,” he said at the time. “But the narrative was set that Daniel is an evil person …. You can see all the allegations online. It’s absolutely insane.”

Asked about the allegation that he hurt his partner when he tried to take her phone, Martell said, “Allegations to make me seem evil. It didn’t happen.”

....snipped....

Earlier this month, Martell said he has been “completely honest and open with absolutely everything,” and he described himself as the “figurehead for the Lily and Jack investigation …. at the forefront, displaying everything I could and telling everything I could to the public.”

At one point during the interview on Jan. 15, Martell spoke about himself in the third person when he declared: “He has nothing to do with the disappearance. But in the public, as long as he looks evil, the public will judge him as being guilty.”
Hero complex much

As sad as I am to learn someone, an adult in this case, says they have been victimized by and has accused DM of assault, etc., leading to charges against him and his arrest, I'm really not surprised at all, and hope beyond all hope that this will lead to ever more peeling back of the layers of the onion of DM and his treatment of those around him, including his custodial stepchildren Lilly and Jack, who IMO disappeared under his watch.

I always feel unrelated charges in a missing persons case are a prelude to bigger one's down the road
Great observation!

Also, it would be interesting to know if DM's mother, father, brother, or anyone else was on the property during the time DM was taken into custody and before he was released.

Certain charges, along with the evidence needed to procure them, often allow certain new "warrants" to be issued, kwim?

I’m going to bet the RCMP was forced into action by outside influences on this one, rather than direct pressure from MBM. Serious allegations are made, then nothing happens, potentially an embarrassment to the RCMP.

What might prove interesting with these charges is if it results in the two turning on each other. JMO

BBM

“The mother of two young siblings who have been missing for eight months told Nova Scotia police her common-law partner had been physically abusive at times, according to newly-unsealed court documents.

The documents were filed to support applications for search warrants, and none of the allegations have been tested in court.”

I look forward to seeing whatever evidence they have to support these charges and hope this new development leads to further information about what happened to Jack and Lilly. I think there is evidence to support these charges. RCMP doesn't just charge people without evidence I don't imagine. Or in a he said she said situation. Or to avoid embarrassment. MOO

This post seems more important now .

Did DM insert that the Dna sample was about tests for the blanket or did the rcmp say it was for that purpose

Because I'm thinking the DNA sample was for the assault case

Unusually DM did not provide anymore details
<bbm>

As they lived together as a family, I can't think of how any DNA sample could relate to a sexual assault 6 months before the children went missing.

Yes I agree, very strong possibility the complainant is indeed the silent MBM considering she left when the children went missing May 2025. Once her allegations in her statements became public the RCMP really had no choice but to lay charges and allow the courts to hear what she had to say but I’ve no idea why it has taken so long.

I am hoping the reason it took so long to press charges was that they wanted him to feel comfortable speaking publicly and loosely for as long as possible.

Let him lock himself in to his own stories and let him make mistakes.
I’m just reminded that “everything happens for a reason”.
JMO

All the charges involve the same complainant, court documents show, and occurred in Lansdowne.

All three alleged offences happened between Sept. 1, 2024 and March 30, 2025.

All he could say lately, over and over again was " the narrative was set that Daniel is an evil person...It’s absolutely insane....“Allegations to make me seem evil. It didn’t happen....

He insists he was " the figurehead for the Lily and Jack investigation >"

And finally, as he began disassociating he began speaking in the 3rd person :

on Jan. 15, Martell spoke about himself in the third person when he declared: “He has nothing to do with the disappearance. But in the public, as long as he looks evil, the public will judge him as being guilty.”

what if LE cautioned her to stay silent
<RSBM>

According to the children's maternal grandmother, Cyndy Murray, in the article linked below from September 2025, police advised the family against speaking to the media:
Replying to my post to add the following excerpts and link to an MSM article which touches on these and other aspects of the case (BBM):

"Two weeks after two young siblings vanished without a trace in rural Nova Scotia, experts are pointing to anomalies in what they say is an unprecedented case that deviates from a typical missing children investigation.
....
A few details stand out to Jeanis as unusual, including the children's absence from school that week. The children's stepfather, Daniel Martell, told CBC News the children were not in school on Thursday or Friday — the morning of the disappearance — due to illness. They also were not at school on Wednesday due to a professional development day.

....
Police will not say if anyone else had contact or saw the children in the days leading up to the day they went missing.
....
Michael Arntfield, a criminologist at Western University in London, Ont., called the case "unprecedented," saying it's highly unlikely for two siblings who live together to vanish when a parent is not involved.

....
The children's maternal grandmother, Cyndy Murray, has said police have advised the family against speaking to the media."

It might not be significant if there’s evidence or even if the charges stick. Perhaps it’s the fact that both the complainant and the accused will be required to testify under oath during the court proceedings related to these charges?

A deeper look into the family dynamics?
RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob McCamon confirmed the nature of the relationship between Brooks-Murray and Martell at the time of the disappearance is part of the investigation.

“I'm not going to comment on … anything being a factor, but I will say that any situation like that would be considered and followed up on by our people,” said McCamon in an interview.
