What I don't understand is why he didn't just stay at the Hilton. We have stayed at that Hilton in the past and had an exquisite room. Seems like a hassle to be staying some other place than the meeting place (unless the hotel was full with those in town to watch the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center).

When we visited NYC at Christmastime one year, we stayed in NJ and took a transit bus to the Port Authority every day. Going to the City just once during Christmas was our goal even though we didn't like how crowded it was.

He knew what he was doing. Didn't risk going to the main NYC bus terminal (Port Authority) when he was catching a bus out of town after the crime. Went to a small bus place (178th St.) instead. Well planned. JMO.

"At 5:41 a.m., he arrived at the Hilton and began wandering the area near the hotel, walking back and forth on West 54th Street, before entering a Starbucks, where he bought a bottle of water and a snack bar."

So he was on scene before he stopped for his coffee and went back.

I think the decision to go to the GW terminal was the ease of drive down the FDR drive/Harlem River drive at that hour. Trying to get by taxi to the Port authority, which is in a very bustling area of midtown manhattan, in the 7:00-8:00 am hour could be a nightmare, and a person could be stuck in a cab in stop and go traffic. Bad idea for someone trying to make a quick getaway. JMO

Even knowing the name, and even if they have moved on him (which they may not have), it would still likely take hours for it to hit the news. It doesn’t sound like there’s anything imminent.

Maybe this is why the witness nearby said he was there "all night". He had been pacing the same block or so for about an hour, which does start to stand out, even in NYC.

You are right- He was on the W side- had to get cross town somewhere. If he took a cab, won’t they be able to get records of the pickups/routes and don't most have cameras in them now?

My hope is that he left a manifesto in the backpack, along with the gun.

What if he bought a second identical backpack, containing nothing, and planted it there in the park just to mess with LE? Could that model be folded up and put inside? He had to have known they’d find it in the park.
Also, the CNN reporting is that they’re honing in on the suspect, but trying to get more info. The reporter was unclear - does that mean they have the name of a person of interest and they’re trying to verify? Because why tell the public they’re closing in? Why alert the perp?
