I have never had long term debilitating pain, so this post is not intended to be insensitive about this subject.
But homeboy had no issue running into the alley and biking through Central Park and up Broadway.
if his physicality has returned, i wonder how much it played into his murderous scheme.

Saving this post as you've made a great point !

I wonder if they will charge him federally. He crossed state lines and it would eliminate jurisdiction issues regarding warrants and extradition back to NY.
I doubt it. He’d still have to be complainted or indicted in SDNY, warrants issued, and then extradited from PA. They would have to go through the same hearings again (preliminary, identity, bond) unless he waives them. There would be no real benefit and usually state courts move a lot faster than federal in my experience.

Also at the age where the diagnosis of a new onset persistent mental illness (bipolar, schizophrenia, psychotic depression) is not out of the realm of possibility. I'm not suggesting he has a diagnosis, but I suspect a "not guilty by reason of insanity" plea would be made.

His affect does seem inappropriate for the entire circumstances- a sign that something could be amiss.
He is at the age where schizophrenia presents itself and one of the early signs of this mental illness is withdrawing from people, apart from the fixation on some obsessive belief, which clearly he had here - so some mental illness is the direction of where my thoughts are leading to at this point.

He could have had pharmaceutical help, which would be a bit ironic.
Moo.. Didn’t he tell the judge tonight that he was of sound mind and not affected by any mental illness or under the influence of any drugs/illegal substances?

I will look for this in writing but I am pretty sure I heard this on the news while they were live broadcasting from outside the building while initial charges were being filed.

Without his attorney there yet or official longterm representation I’m sure they could try to walk that statement back later. But according to reporters he was adamant to the judge he was not affected mentally by anything.
Yes, but, do people in the throes of mental health crises often stop to say "oh my, I might be a bit out of my mind?" I think the main feature of psychosis (not diagnosing! just giving an example.) is not knowing you're experiencing it. His history isn't as relevant to me as his current mental state.

Could be just me, but Luigi seems more thin compared to the shirtless picture of him in his X banner. Those eyebrows were the only reason why he was recognized at McDonald's
In addition to the eyebrows, he probably was recognized because he was wearing the same mask and jacket as he was in the photos circulated by LE. Feel like he might not have been recognized if he had changed his coat and removed the mask but JMO

what his crime did vis-a-vis society was make CEOs more apt to hire and use more security firms
I think it’s the same guy but he looks very different in his jail cell photo vs the Manhattan pics where in every photo released he was wearing a hoody.

Out of curiosity, I’ve never been on a Greyhound bus, do they have WiFi?
Wi-Fi is free on all our busesfor every passenger. We see it as a must-have feature, not a premium feature. So go ahead, check your emails or share your scenic views on Instagram (we'd love if you tag it #gogreyhound). However, please don't stream video during your journey, as we all need to share the bandwidth!

Bus Features | Greyhound

(I see some people complaining on various sites that it does not always work... dead zones? etc.)

no idea about the bus
I think he looks spot on to the taxi pics
however, the hostel pic looks different to me - I was actually expecting him to have light-coloured hair
I thought he would certainly have very dark or black hair due to the fact that is eyebrows are so dense and dark.

So who was he talking to on the burner phone? He seems very isolated from his family and friends. If he had the faraday bag, I assume he had his own cell phone with him in addition to the burner police found.
I was wondering the same. But for all we know it was no one - I suppose it's possible he was holding it to speak to pretend to look occupied. Unlikely, but just a though.

It's going to be so fascinating to see what unfolds as the police stitch together his whereabouts - particularly those days he spent in NYC. There are 24 hours in a day - and only so many you can spend sleeping.

Another big question mark is his family relationships - it seems like he had fallen totally off the grid. This is someone who managed to fit in two degrees in four years at an Ivy league school - and he seemed a little adrift relative to the career trajectory you'd expect given his education and family background. He also seems to have come from a large and closely knit family - presumably his parents were concerned about him.

He had chronic pain and then had surgery, it sounds like. I'm wondering whether there were issues with painkillers?

Mangione’s mother made the report to the San Francisco Police Department on Nov. 18, according to a police source with knowledge of the case. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had been in San Francisco or if she had a reason to believe that he was.

Luigi was an entitled kid who perhaps was indoctrinated by his college (not sure). From what I have read, Brian Thompson was a self-made person with two young sons. Even though he separated from his wife, he bought a house less than a mile away to be close to his boys.

The entire scenario is such a tragedy. Luigi has ruined his life, his family's lives and the lives of Brian's family. Of course, it may turn out that Luigi has a mental health issues, which will make it even more tragic because his sister is a doctor; and the family had the means to help him.

I also want to add that I bet that Luigi could have had meaningful talks with Brian. who was said to be the nicest guy. I bet Brian would have listened to his concerns.

JMO.

A very thoughtful essay by a Pulitzer prize winning writer regarding the murder and the public's response to it.

This article is spot on, IMO.

I mentioned before, I worked in a hospital billing department for 9 years, and insurance companies twist themselves into contortions to avoid paying for things that they are obligated to pay for.

This is an imperfect analogy, but imagine you have a lawyer on retainer to deal with your occasional legal issues.

You get into a car accident that is not your fault yet the other driver is suing you.

You call your lawyer, whose retainer you have paid faithfully for years, only to be told that car accidents are not covered by your retainer. Even though the contract you signed clearly says they are.

Your neighbor is arguing with you over where the line is between your and their property. You call your lawyer for assistance, only to be told that property issues are not covered by your retainer. Even though the contract you signed clearly says they are.

You're the victim of identity theft and you call your lawyer for help, only to be told that identify theft is not covered by your retainer. Even though the contract you signed clearly says they are.

By now you are enraged that you are not receiving the services that you have been paying for. So you look around to see if you can find a better lawyer, only to learn that nearly EVERY OTHER LAWYER behaves the same.

This is why people hate the health "insurance" industry so much. They pay their premiums in good faith, but when it comes time for the insurance company to reciprocate by paying for services they need, the company refuses.

Delay, Deny, Defend is sadly accurate. JMO based on my own experience.
