Am not US based so not sure about the procedures but is there any way a jury trial could be avoided and the case decided by a panel of judges?
I believe the defendant has to agree to that. Laken Riley's killer did that and he got the book thrown at him. Let's hope Squeegie does the same!

He is 100% going to make the trial him v the healthcare system, sadly I can see many on the jury falling for it
I'm not so sure about that.

There's many aspects of this that look like the onset of mental illness, with the entire world adding on their judgments as to whether it was justified or that he's a whiny narcissist depending on their side.

It's not fair to glorify this, and it's definitely not fair to entirely demonize him until we know the rest of the story, either.

I keep thinking about how much people villainized Andrea Yates, and now she's generally recognized as being a victim in the situation as well.

The shooter's Reddit account indicates that SOMETHING was wrong, including cognitive issues and insomnia, as far back as 2018.

He writes like he might potentially be autistic, but definitely isn't abrasive or 'incel'-like in his writing. In comparison, Madeline Soto's murderer definitely did post in a way that made it clear that he was an unpleasant person in real life as well.

I think his lawyer should be able to make a fairly convincing case for insanity without going much into who the victim was.

During an extradition hearing in Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pa., on Tuesday, Luigi Mangione's defense attorney reportedly said his client will fight his extradition to New York, where he's facing murder and other charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“He is contesting it,” Thomas Dickey, Mangione's lawyer, told the judge in court, according to CNN and other news outlets.

Mangione was again denied bail and will continue to be held at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution on weapons charges stemming from his arrest in Altoona, Pa., on Monday.

A preliminary hearing for those charges has been scheduled for Dec. 23.

Because he’s angry, he’s an incel? Have none of you ever been at the mercy of a doctor or health insurance provider? Have none of you ever known someone who has a lifelong ailment? Can you really not see any validity to the anger? Have none of you ever received a medical bill in the hundreds or thousands?

The victim shouldn’t have died - that isn’t justified.

We also can’t gloss over what private health insurance providers have been able to get away with for so long.
So far we have seen no proof that the insurance industry has caused any issue personally for him. We know he had surgery. We know he had medial issues before that with his back. He has some reddit posts talking about how to stand up to doctors and get what you want. If he's acting on behalf of others then that is one thing, but so far we have seen nothing that shows he personally was denied any medical care or that he is in some signifigant debt due to having to pay for anything.

McDonald's customer recounts moment CEO shooting suspect spotted

Larry, who left the restaurant before the arrest, said he personally thought the young man who went to sit in the back corner after placing his order was an employee.

"They'll go back there on break and they'll take a rest, you know, maybe take a little sleep or something," he said.

Asked for his thoughts on one of the most wanted suspects in the US being arrested at his local fast-food restaurant, Larry said he was "a little bit surprised".

"But I'm not really surprised, you know?," he added.

"I mean, the way the world is right now, it's pretty crazy."

What has really surprised me (watching this from the other side of the world) is pharmacists and nurses also participating in the debate and telling of the number of people they have witnessed to have had their lives wrecked by health insurance companies. I was expecting there would be testimonies from patients/people with insurance, but not from staff in the professions in the health field.
It’s incredibly frustrating when a patient can’t receive the care they need.

According to police, a McDonald’s employee later called 911 to report the suspect. When officers arrived, they found Mangione at the back of the restaurant, wearing a blue surgical mask and a brown beanie and looking at a laptop.

The officers said that when they asked Mangione if he had been to New York recently, he became quiet and “started to shake.”

“It’s unbelievable,” Larry told CNN. “I still can’t hardly believe it’s for real, ya know?”

The UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect is fighting extradition. Here's what comes next

From CNN's Michelle Watson

Luigi Mangione’s defense team has 14 days to file a petition for habeas corpus, Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks said Tuesday following Mangione’s court appearance in Pennsylvania. Mangione is currently fighting extradition to New York.

“They have 14 days to file a petition for habeas corpus, and that would simply be a document challenging the commonwealth’s ability to prove that the defendant is the person that the state of New York has issued the arrest warrant for,” Weeks said.

Any court hearing on that petition will have to happen have after that 14-day deadline, Weeks added.

Mangione has two dockets in Blair County, Pennsylvania. One of them will go away once he is extradited since it is his fugitive from justice charge, according to Weeks. The other case relates to Mangione’s encounter with the Altoona Police Department when he was taken into custody Monday.

Mangione was denied bail related to both dockets, Weeks said.

“Our primary focus is to cooperate with the New York City Police Department and Manhattan District attorney’s office so this defendant can be prosecuted for his New York homicide charge,” Weeks said.

Well considering Squeegie gave the same
Fake ID used at the hostel, he WILL be extradited!

Hard to know how much time it could take to extradite Mangione - 'El Chapo' lawyer

Nada Tawfik
Reporting from New York

[...]

Lichtman says that because of Mangione’s mental state from his health issues - which are said to include a back injury - he may have a viable Extreme Emotional Disturbance defence in New York. That could reduce any potential sentence.

Certainly. Hopefully lawmakers will start addressing guns and healthcare.
Well, now that you mention that, Sandy Hook with many little children killed in cold blood by yet another mentally-ill young man with a gun didn't change gun culture in this nation.

In the r/spondylolisthesis community back in April, Mangione posted advice to other users saying: "Keep trying different surgeons. ‘Nobody will operate on my back until I’m at least 40’ is nonsense coming from a medical professional who lacks perspective.”

Given what is known about his background, one would assume LM was not without connections to get help sooner than when he turns 40 ?
I know nothing about this particular surgery, but in the UK there's real reluctance to carry out some forms of surgery such as hip and knee replacements too young because each device used typically only lasts so many years and the surgery can only be repeated a couple of times. Could similar considerations apply in this case?

“My client is not waiving extradition. He is contesting it,” defense attorney Tom Dickey told Judge David Consigio at the hearing.

Nope, not what I said (or meant). I was referring to his physical limitations preventing him from having sex, and I actually asked if that could be deemed an incel (not being too familiar with the ins and outs of incels).

It's highly likely none of this ever applied to Luigi.

Nobody is glossing over that or disagreeing with your sentiments about the industry as a whole (nobody in their right mind would say it's working well, IMO). But in this case, I think it's all a case of misplaced anger over his own physical problems.

As always, just my opinion.
Ok - misunderstood your questioning of the incel part, so I appreciate you clarifying. I too am not all that familiar but know anger can’t possibly be the only qualifier. Other posters have seen the comment of a lake of relationship and throw around incel language.

I’m glad you’re able to see the issues with American healthcare. As for this case, it was reported that he and his mom were having issues with coverage and bills. So it is applicable to even wealthy people.

Two things can be true: he shouldn’t have committed murder and his anger towards UHC may be justified.

I couldnt do it, watch people get turned away. I feel bad for the healthcare workers, who had no control over who got turned away, seeing people needing help and not being able to do anything. The unfairness of it all, it would be a tough job to manage long term and not be affected by it.

Luigi Mangione was the 'best at pick-up lines' at private Baltimore school, classmates said

By Ronny Reyes
UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione was hailed as being the “best at pick-up lines” by his classmates at a Maryland private school, according to his yearbook.

An image of Mangione’s profile at the Gilman School, in Baltimore, shows he entered the school in the sixth grade, calling his experience at the school “illuminating” and thanking his parents for the opportunity to attend.

The yearbook from Luigi Mangione's time at prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, a $40,000-a-year prep school he attended from 2010-2016, also includes a touching message from his parents, who wrote that they were astounded by his "genuine respect" for others while Luigi himself said his school experience was "illuminating." The future accused murderer went by several aliases in school, including “pepperoni." Gilman School
“I’ll admit, no matter how much I hated it at the time, [you] sending me to Gilman was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Love you,” Mangione wrote.

The page, obtained by SNWS, also shows that Mangione went by several aliases in the school, including “pepperoni,” “Squeej” and “30 degrees.”

His classmates described Mangione as a nice, “very normal guy,” and a “smart kid” who would go on to be valedictorian in 2016, according to SNWS.

I had to google "30 degrees" to determine the meaning of his nickname. Here it is:

There are two meanings listed, one Normal and one Offensive. Here's the Normal one:)

"30 Degrees" is a slang term that has been gaining popularity in recent years, particularly among young people. The term refers to a state of mind or a feeling of being completely relaxed and carefree, as if one were on a tropical island where the temperature is a perfect 30 degrees Celsius.

And there he is.. the real Luigi..

I'm glad he was caught when he was, because THIS doesn't look like the face of a man that was finished.
Agreed. Nasty piece of work. I hope he is never freed.

I was referring to his physical limitations preventing him from having sex, and I actually asked if that could be deemed an incel (not being too familiar with the ins and outs of incels). (Incels have been mentioned before, here, with regard to this case....I am using the term as "sexual frustration," which for some humans can really affect their outlook/moods, etc.)

It's highly likely none of this ever applied to Luigi.

"...healthcare is a business, not a right, and human lives are expendable in the interest of ensuring that obscene wealth remains concentrated in the hands of an elite minority. Americans spend far more money per capita on healthcare than their counterparts in other developed nations – but it’s not like you get what you pay for. Often, the US healthcare experience consists of jumping through hellish bureaucratic hoops, spending a good portion of your life on hold on the telephone, and battling insurance claims denials – if you have the energy and time to do so."

"..the man was in fact emblematic of the lethal inequality that underpins US corporatocracy, where the health insurance racket does its part to keep people so sick and debt-ridden that they can’t pose a challenge to the system. And that, at the end of the day, is why the gunman is being “venerated as something approaching a folk hero”.

Same, I am sure he has had discomfort but he managed to sleep 10 nights in uncomfortable beds in a hostel, carry an ebike battery around and other things in backpack
I don’t think his issue with UHc is his pain though it’s their profits and denial rates by the sounds of it.

  • #660
Certainly. Hopefully lawmakers will start addressing guns and healthcare.

Unfortunately, millions of people just learned that you can make your own lethal weapon with a 3D printer! (I know I did!)

It’s incredibly frustrating when a patient can’t receive the care they need.

Of course. Is there any evidence this happened with/to Luigi, though?
