The UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect is fighting extradition. Here's what comes next

From CNN's Michelle Watson

Luigi Mangione’s defense team has 14 days to file a petition for habeas corpus, Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks said Tuesday following Mangione’s court appearance in Pennsylvania. Mangione is currently fighting extradition to New York.

“They have 14 days to file a petition for habeas corpus, and that would simply be a document challenging the commonwealth’s ability to prove that the defendant is the person that the state of New York has issued the arrest warrant for,” Weeks said.

Any court hearing on that petition will have to happen have after that 14-day deadline, Weeks added.

Mangione has two dockets in Blair County, Pennsylvania. One of them will go away once he is extradited since it is his fugitive from justice charge, according to Weeks. The other case relates to Mangione’s encounter with the Altoona Police Department when he was taken into custody Monday.

Mangione was denied bail related to both dockets, Weeks said.

“Our primary focus is to cooperate with the New York City Police Department and Manhattan District attorney’s office so this defendant can be prosecuted for his New York homicide charge,” Weeks said.

No, that cannot be imposed on him. He has the right to a jury trial just like everyone.

Thanks, wondered if there was anything in law like “because of social media coverage we cannot ensure an impartial jury therefore we must proceed with a judge only trial”

"Debilitating!? Hmmmmm, he was still able to be up at 5am, walk around the streets near the hotel and hang around for ages whilst still managing to shoot someone several times (while rapidly clearing repeated malfunctions) carrying a backpack and then ride off into the sunrise on a fast bike!

Not debilitating at all, by the looks of a

118 lbs?!?!?! Wow, this would seem to indicate profound physical deterioration. If he really is around 6 ft. tall, as reported by witnesses, and with the photos of a very well-chiseled body with big muscles posted on his social media, he would have weighed a lot more than 118 lbs. in his better days, I think. Maybe at least 160? Probably a combination of his physical pain and emotional distress and being on the run caused this. He looks a lot older than 26 in the mug

I had asked myself why he chose an e-bike on a previous thread, and someone answered that it was probably because it was faster.
Come to think of it, it's more likely he chose an e-bike because he couldn't use a normal bike even if he wanted, due to his back pain.

MOO
Agree completely doesn’t take nearly the effort if you’re not pedaling but still plenty fast and of course would hurt going over potholes/bumps. Are there any videos of him running or walking briskly? If so I haven’t seen them. Seem to recall he walked (rather than ran) away from the scene between the parked cars.

Am not US based so not sure about the procedures but is there any way a jury trial could be avoided and the case decided by a panel of judges?
The defendant must request a bench trial.

Cases with much a higher profile have gone to trial, derrick cheauvin, casey anthony, OJ, etc

That would be a nightmare, honestly - The potential for the judge to be corrupt is too high.

They can request a change of venue and have the case moved to a different state where less people are familiar with it.

And there he is.. the real Luigi..

I'm glad he was caught when he was, because THIS doesn't look like the face of a man that was finished.
I agree...

He has livened up! He looked beaten when they arrested him.

If forbes linked it, then i think it should be fine!

Thank you for your help! Yes, Forbes verified it was him.

If anyone is interested in attempting to access, the link is PullPush Reddit Search

It sometimes doesn't pull on the first search and you have to continually click 'Fetch More' at the bottom to retrieve more posts etc. But overall, most of his reddit posts about his health are still accessible as of this posting.

As did Hinckley, (Reagan's shooter).

Reading through that, (Hinckley's), Wikipedia page, I'm wondering if some of the testing they mentioned to prove schizophrenia like the CAT scan mentioned has gotten more advanced since then.

He is 100% going to make the trial him v the healthcare system, sadly I can see many on the jury falling for it

Ugh. I was just listening to her calls recently. The screaming. The selfishness and the enabling. All so, so gross.

While I agree that he felt entitled to kill the victim, I don't get the same vibe with this case that I did with that one. I kind of agree with @MassGuy that there could be some sort of mental issue at play here. The fact that his friends state he went radio silent some months ago points to someone becoming reclusive and possibly dark in their thoughts. He seems to have possibly become misanthropic to some degree. Certain mental health issues tend to emerge in one's 20's.
I agree, there’s probably some mental health issue exasperating his feelings. And this next comment is separate from your post, but I don’t agree with a lot of the other comments about him being selfish, spoiled brat, etc. He’s saying the opposite from what I’ve seen - his manifesto was in defense of the American people. The people who are crying narcissism, etc can’t possibly ignore the fact that SO MANY Americans have been at the mercy of private health insurance companies. Combine these festering feelings of so many with America’s propensity for gun violence, this was definitely somewhere on our bingo card.

Luigi Mangione was the 'best at pick-up lines' at private Baltimore school, classmates said

By Ronny Reyes
UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione was hailed as being the “best at pick-up lines” by his classmates at a Maryland private school, according to his yearbook.

An image of Mangione’s profile at the Gilman School, in Baltimore, shows he entered the school in the sixth grade, calling his experience at the school “illuminating” and thanking his parents for the opportunity to attend.

The yearbook from Luigi Mangione's time at prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, a $40,000-a-year prep school he attended from 2010-2016, also includes a touching message from his parents, who wrote that they were astounded by his "genuine respect" for others while Luigi himself said his school experience was "illuminating." The future accused murderer went by several aliases in school, including “pepperoni." Gilman School
“I’ll admit, no matter how much I hated it at the time, [you] sending me to Gilman was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Love you,” Mangione wrote.

The page, obtained by SNWS, also shows that Mangione went by several aliases in the school, including “pepperoni,” “Squeej” and “30 degrees.”

His classmates described Mangione as a nice, “very normal guy,” and a “smart kid” who would go on to be valedictorian in 2016, according to SNWS.

I wonder if this delay is because he is finally able to talk to his lawyer or is he talking to police because his lawyer is present? Likely easier to meet with his lawyer at the courthouse than at the jail.
