"Debilitating!? Hmmmmm, he was still able to be up at 5am, walk around the streets near the hotel and hang around for ages whilst still managing to shoot someone several times (while rapidly clearing repeated malfunctions) carrying a backpack and then ride off into the sunrise on a fast bike!

Not debilitating at all, by the looks of it.

This is sort of like discussing politics. Certain people will never see eye to eye. There are people here who think that the 20% that their policy requires them to pay until they meet their out of pocket is denying benefits. Or a deductible or a co-pay.

Brian Thompson shooting suspect Luigi Mangione suffered a back injury so severe he was unable to have sex, a former roommate said.

RJ Martin lived with the murder defendant for six months at a Hawaii co-living space and told The New York Times about 26 year-old Mangione's secret agony.

'He knew that dating and being physically intimate with his back condition wasn’t possible,' Mr Martin told The Times.

Explaining the injury that Mangione had suffered after a back condition called spondylolisthesis was worsened by a surfing accident Martin said: 'His spine was kind of misaligned.

'He said his lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve.'

Martin told CNN that Mangione, who he described as a bright engineer, suffered from debilitating pain throughout his six month stay at SurfBreak during 2022.

He said a single surf lesson left Mangione 'in bed for a week' afterwards, adding: 'It was really traumatic and difficult, you know, when you’re in your early twenties and you can’t, you know, do some basic things.'

I am with you. I have ZERO pity for him. NONE… Do you know how many people would love to be able to physically move around like he does? Sorry kid, Nothing here. He made poor choices.

Interested to know to whom he was reported “missing” … it doesn’t say to police. Just curious if it was a police report … or if they hired PI. And how they described circumstances of his missing.

Kaczynski’s book claims that the Industrial Revolution was a “disaster for the human race” — its consequences “have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering,” according to its description on Goodreads.

In what appears to be his review of the book, Mangione wrote that it is “simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.”

Mangione added a “take” he found online that he found “interesting”: “When all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive. You may not like his methods, but to see things from his perspective, it’s not terrorism, it’s war and revolution.”
from here Person of interest tied to shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO spent a summer working at Stanford
As far as we know he didn't try other methods of communication. He certainly didn't try to raise support for his cause from what we know.

All my opinion, obviously and he's not guilty of anything as it stands today.

I wonder if the difference in sentencing (murder in first degree In Minnesota vs second degree in NY) played any part in why he chose NY? I realize there’s a lot of factors but I wonder if he researched this.
Maybe doing it in NYC guaranteed a larger audience. I differ from others on the forum, I believe this is a big, historic deal. It's galvanizing, it awakens dark, pummeled emotions in every American who deals with the bs of the "health care" insurers.

I don't have a clue - it was just a hypothetical. If investments in a trust fund can be wiped out then I'd surmise that investments held in a pension fund can be too.
Yes, in theory a portfolio of investments can be completely wiped out but that would require the share price/company value of each investment in the fund/portfolio to be reduced to zero and that is not caused by insider trading.

Do we know how the NYPD was able to locate his hostel so quickly?

It's incredibly impressive how quickly they managed to analyze a very high amount of camera footage and zero-in on the hostel, which is what allowed them to obtain the flirting picture that ultimately led to his capture. Would have been like finding a needle in a hay stack manually.

Given the herculean task of reviewing this much footage manually, do you suspect that AI was used? They might be able to input a picture (from the immediate crime scene) and have the system automatically scan all cameras over a certain period to recreate a suspect's movements?
My assumption was, they used his backpack on the day as an identifier in their video search system. They had a timeframe when city not busy. If they got him up by the hostel … then door knocking ..
Think LM used an identifier purposely, then ditched it as part of escape.

As usual, the headline is bigger than the story... but its new..

Other former high school friends said the high-achieving Valedictorian went “absolutely crazy” after the surgery, according to Jack Mac, a staffer at sports and pop culture outlet, Barstool Sports.

He appeared to be a fan boy of Ted Kaczynski
We see how it worked out for Ted K.
It will work out the same for LM.
Change cant be made through violence, fear, criminal [we experience that daily] acts, its not the answer, "our country’s people requires me to respond with an act of war" as LM stated, is not the answer. He's sounds like a terrorist.
Many have insurance issues, one medical issue can put a person, family in bankruptcy, there is no denying chronic pain and suffering by millions of people; however, violence is not how you change the system.
As a constituent advocate with elected officials, attend meetings and let your voice be heard, for starters.
Did this guy go to the polls without doing his research and vote for whoever? Is he even a voter?
My thoughts and moo only

I think the time of morning made it easier to track his movements that morning. I would think NYC at 5am-7am is much less busy than say 9am or noon time. I also wonder if someone at the hostel called and said they recognized the man as someone that was staying there?

It says he was reported missing to the San Francisco Police Department. From article: "Mangione’s mother, Kathleen Mangione, made the report to the San Francisco Police Department on Nov. 18, according to a police source with knowledge of the case."

Responding to this from yesterday's closed thread:

"I don't understand people's focus on his Goodreads list, aren't people used to reading ideas from authors who are completely opposite to theirs in order to (in a way) ''protect'' themselves and get a full picture of who are the crazies in society past and present? Maybe I think so because I am a Goodreads volunteer librarian but I read widely, things that I am passionate about and also things that are completely outside my realm/moral values/beliefs to get an insight on what others feel/think, and sort of understand how they react. His Goodreads list (if I did not know he has killed someone) does not tell me anything other than he has an inquisitive mind." @Columbo Was The Best

Three things:

First and foremost, it was one of the first things we were able to read that made him 'human' to us, and not some character in a true crime fiction movie that many people had made him out to be. I don't think it's unnatural to jump to one of the first resources of data that's publicly available when trying to learn who he is.

Second, while I think there are many people like you, it's not uncommon for people to only read literature or consume media that aligns with their ideals. Most of us know a lot more about what believe than what we don't.

Lastly, he wasn't just posting what he read - he left comments and favorited quotes, which is a step further than just trying to have a balanced point of view / perspective on issues. It provides insight into his way of thinking, which is very interesting when dealing with someone who will go to these great lengths to prove a point.

I think a lot of disabilities can be seen to fluctuate - pain is invisible, it also sounds like intermittent numbness etc was affecting his sex life. You would be astonished at what adrenaline does to the body - people don’t notice amputations immediately after explosions, I’ve seen a jockey with multiple internal injuries and bleeds get up after a fall and walk several paces before collapsing, another rider smash her leg and break it on a fence without noticing the pain when adrenaline high.

He clearly was debilitated by his injury in his every day dreams and aspirations, I think it’s a very ableist view to think that because someone looks normal they don’t suffer…

Did he ask for pity? He seems pretty confident in his actions as some sort of psuedo-revolutionary.

I'm shocked that he didn't do more to disguise his appearance.

At the very least he could have a fairly substantial beard right now if he'd started growing it right after the murde

I do see stubble but not the kind of growth one would expect after five days.

I wonder where he was shaving? He couldn't have been traveling around on a bus all this time.
After all that intricate planning and decisive forethought you would have thought he'd be thinking about a change in hair or a fake mole on his face.

This whole case leaves me with a strange feeling.

It’s not often I have any sympathies towards a murderer but in this case I can’t help having a few. He was obviously aggrieved by the injustices of United Healthcare (as are many Americans as I’ve learnt from this thread). He was also clearly struggling with something in the months prior to this happening IMO (hence his social media posts stopping, not contacting family etc).

He is a very clever man I just wish he chose a more intelligent way of showing his displeasure with united healthcare - murdering somebody is never the correct option.
I understand why he did what he did but I certainly do not condone it.

I have zero sympathy for the murderer.
I have much sympathy for the family of the person he murdered.
