How can he fight extradition to NY state? if the crime was committed there, should it not be compulsory that he is judged there? Asking as someone with zero knowledge of the US judicial system.

On another issue, I did not see a lot of security measures in place when the convicts were left out of the police van. Before this boy was escorted out, there was a group of four men in orange suits and a not so long gap between them and police officers/reporters. Isn't this dangerous? I mean not only for the reporters but also for the convicts themselves (someone could try to shoot them.)
It's just a delay tactic of 45-60 days. PA has to now crank out additional paperwork, he will definitely be heading to NY soon. MOO

That's why, like it or not, it will reverberate for a long time. HE didn't need to do it.

I remember during the vietnam war protests it wasn't little Joey Schmoe from the hood getting the headlines, getting arrested. It was big namers whose lives had been defined by comfort, money, great educational opportunities.

The media LOVES celebrities, the wealthy, and anyone attractive. The media is part of the problem, but they claim it's what makes RATINGS. All about MONEY.
If a homeless man shot him do you think it would have made headlines for a week straight? Maybe, maybe not. :(

Fighting extradition simply means that the Government will need to demonstrate reasonable cause to extradite him - It will happen, it will just delay it slightly.

Re: security, larger cities have sally ports, allowing the transporting vehicles to pull in, and be out of view/sight out of the public. However, Altoona is a relatively small city that doesn't typically see high risk/profile inmates.

And his "friends" at Rikers will appreciate his "fans" for that I'm sure! Little *** like him will be very popular!! ;)
But if commissary is currency, I think he’ll have a lot of financial weight to push around. He may not be physically intimidating or street smart, but I imagine he’s pretty shrewd and strategic.

Federal charges need to be filed to stop this nonsense. jmo

Both things can be true.
1. Cowardly, cold-blooded murder of anyone for any reason is NOT OK.
2. Denials of coverage for legitimate medical issues by healthcare companies are also NOT OK.
MOO
I wish I could like this a bunch of times.

Just overheard the Reuters live video feed say "court is ajourned and that he's fighting extradition to NY".
Of course he is! He’s going to be a royal PITA. An entitled little punk who’s the smartest person in the room. JMO

It's just due process. All Americans have the right to a legal proceeding when it's indicated by law. Extradition, being outside the jurisdiction of any one state, requires a legal proceeding involving presentation of facts by at least two states.

Some criminal defendants waive their right to an extradition hearing, because they are encouraged to think the next jail/situation will be better. Others want to play the legal game, for personal reasons, for attention. This case falls into that second group, which is not at all surprising given what we know so far.

Does he have a lawyer? I'm assuming he does but I haven't heard.

Lying about not knowing about the cash is odd, however.
Has it been mentioned what foreign currency he had on him? Canadian, Mexican . . . ?

I can't imagine how his family is coping with this. From pride in their son/sibling to sheer devastation.

It makes me angry -- what he has perpetrated onto his family.
By all accounts they worried about him and I think were looking for him as well ?

Sure, blame your own mother.
Awful.
Hardly 'cruel', it was common years ago to try to coax left-handed people to switch, but that's largely gone out of favor now.
People prob. thought they were being helpful to the child to encourage them to use their right hand, that's all.
If & when he winds up in prison for life or however long -- he can eat with his left hand all he wants !

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old identified as a “strong person of interest” in last week’s slaying of a health insurance executive on the streets of Manhattan, was reported missing to San Francisco police last month, The Standard has learned.
His mother, Kathleen Mangione, made the report to the San Francisco Police Department on Nov. 18, according to a police source with knowledge of the case. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Mangione had been in San Francisco or if his mother had reason to believe he was.

LM obviously had family who were concerned for his well-being.
Just adds layers of disgust imo, for his actions.
Fwiw, LE do have their man.

This case is going to become a major drama.

Just caught “an insult to the intelligence of the American people…”
Major drama with HIM at the center.

Just what he wants.

My sympathy for his medical problems is eroding, quickly.

It will become a historical circus show.
Just wait for it...buckle up.

YES!! Very well said. BOTH cause senseless and unnecessary deaths and NEITHER are acceptable.

This looks to me like a situation that needs, and will get, multiple psychiatric assessments. I’m no MD and no idea if this is manic, schizophrenic, both or something else entirely, but MOO, I expect there to be a significant legal discussion around competency shortly.

I'm curious if he was drug tested when he was arrested. Marijuana usage is linked to increased risk of schizophrenia, people in chronic pain sometimes turn to that for pain relief, and I've been told by people in the DC area that it's readily available from stores there in some quasi-legal form.

Visions of Sarah Boone but on a much bigger scale.

Wow! Did you guys see that on Reuters Live a few seconds ago? The police delivered him to court just now and he turned and yelled something loudly, sort of pushing away from officers, bellowing something about "injustice in the system and this being an insult to the intelligence of the American People."
It astonishes me that the US still takes high-profile prisoners (or any prisoners, for that matter) in and out of courts and police stations near the presence of the public. There was a particular incident in Texas 61 years ago that should have ended that overnight!

Good question.
It would hint as to LM's further plans.

Hope the defense atty. puts him on the stand and lets him talk.
Luigi will bury himself.
