I agree as well. I also feel that this situation would be approached was differently in the US, "everyone is a suspect" especially children cases over here.
They also had a baby, was the baby alseep? Did she get up to feed or change it while the older kids were up? Seems like it would be a good time to get the kids fed & changed for the day...
You have very good points. I totally get being "overwhelmed" but you still have responsibilities when you have children. I feel like people are very quick to assume children are autistic these days when in reality (& many cases) it's because the children are lacking structure, are board so they tend to get hyper, & development delays due to not having certain typical needs met (ready books to your child helps a lot, playing games, Structure, structure, STRUCTURE & routine help tremendously). We've seen in my profession children get self diagnosed by the parents saying their children are autistic & by the time testing is done it comes down to are these kids actually autistic or are they lacking structure, routine, & emotional/physical care? It's usually the latter & within the year with a basic plan the children are doing tremendously better, regression can & does play a role when parents or caregivers fail to do their duty on part of plan.
& I am not saying that this part is the case at all with these parents but we've also seen many many parents push for diagnosis on many disabilities type for extra income, recently we've had a case where the parents were charged with fraud for it & had a huge judgement to pay the government back the proceeds. (Again not saying these parents are or were intending on doing it, just that it's a very real thing especially in recent years.)
If the children did wander off (which is likely) they could have been unsupervised for quite awhile & pretty often.
