For those of you in NYC, how easy is it to rent an eBike? Primarily with cash. I’m familiar with the Citi rentals but this wasn’t one of those. So outside of the Citi ones which basically dominate the city, how else could he have gotten his hands on an eBike short of stealing it?

Craig's List.

Facebook Marketplace.

Message boards.

Buy one on Amazon (i see one for $249).

The first 3 take cash. I'm curious how far outside of NY he could have purchased it and ridden it in. Would that even be feasible or possible?

Or easily bought much more cheaply on Mercari or Poshmark...

Yep. Or for under $100 on eBay.

The suspect has not totally disregarded his fingerprints. The way he planned everything, I just don't see it. Obviously he wanted that backpack to be found, so he isn't going to leave prints on it or the energy bar that is in the pocket. He covers them with a clear silicone that dries so they don't show up.

Going to another level of murder mystery writing: he brings with him that morning an empty water bottle and the empty wrapper that somebody at Starbuck's had thrown away on a previous day. He grabbed them out of the trash. He specifically goes to Starbuck's to buy those things before the shooting and puts them in his pocket, but places the ones with somebody else's prints/dna on them near the scene.

LE finds those items after the shooting, all excited that the found gold. The results come back. The person who drank the water and ate the energy bar at Starbuck's name was...

Brian Thompson.

Somehow I get the idea they consider this victim to be some magnitude more important than all the other single people gunned down on the street every night across the nation. I wonder why this victim is worth more resources. Just my opinion.
Because he was gunned down in the middle of the city, by a mask wearing assassin armed with a silenced pistol.

For all the cameras to see.

That just doesn’t happen. Ever.

That’ll always blow up into a national story, and drive the news cycle for days. All eyes are on the NYPD, and they know it.

Just out of curiosity I'd like to know how many other people lost their lives on NY streets to gunfire in the last few days.

Hostels: Who stays there, other than traveling students?
Older people. Solo women travelers. Bachelor and bachelorette partiers. People who like to hang out in hostels and talk to other traveling people.

Does anyone else think that this suspect could easily be of college age, though? So, for him, perhaps it was protective coloration (and more money to spend elsewhere on his plan).

I'm 54 and I stay in them in Europe sometimes. But in the US, besides traveling students, I hear more about unhoused people or people who are struggling financially, and I imagine folks who need to be in NYC but can't afford the exorbitant cost of a hotel in the city.

rueters is quoting adams from ten hours ago - they seem to be gaming the public, this at 9:00 (an hour ago) is covering what adams said perhaps at 9 this morning. ?? idk
I completely agree and suggested the very same in my earlier post -- yet isn't it bizarrely hypocritical of him to wear Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas, an expensive backpack, expensive e-bike, eats McDonals and buys Starbucks. Fascinating and confusing to contemplate.

He did carefully place something on top of the garbage pile. Was it ever leaked or directly shared what that was?

I find it really strange… if I was getting threats there is no way I would wear bright blue stand out.
Blue jacket is the corporate color supposedly.

Had to finally create an account... the thread moves fast.. so maybe i missed it, but this is the biggest live / real time crime case with main stream interest since the DC sniper..

I also feel the DC snipers taunted with tarot cards, so the taunting angle is somewhat similar to words on the bullets and monopoly money in this case. Has anyone else thought of this comparison or have some mentioned it here and I missed it?
Welcome

Manhunts are always like this. But with “normal” shootings in the street, they would be doing this same investigation, the reporters just wouldn’t be reporting on every single thing. The fact that the case is bizarre and it’s a manhunt makes it an interesting story to cover. Exhibit A: we are all here following along

Yes, I posted earlier how I believe him to be a NY college student, familiar with midtown, possibly a grad student who did his thesis research on corporate greed.

A thought came up reading the many really well-articulated ideas people were having, are we seeing the potential trend where people are determined to commit a crime and see doing it in a surveillance society as a challenge to be overcome? The public discussion about the Idaho Four college murders and then the public discussion of the New York murder both have an element where the assumed actor was apparently consciously committing a murder, but appears to have tried to plan every movement to counter technology. I'm wondering if total surveillance as a condition of fact has created the counter-reaction of seeing this total surveillance as a challenge to be overcome?
He purposely committed the murder in front of cameras. I guess you could call that overcoming the surveillance challenge.

Then he biked away and entered a bus station miles uptown - caught on camera.

He overcame the surveillance by having a plan of escape that was faster then NYPD gathering the videos.
