So it seems now like his distancing himself from his family was deliberate. He obviously wants to take sole “credit” for devising and funding this murder on his own. He even disavows the money he was found with. I guess having thousands in cash on hand is a bad look for a wannabe savior for the everyman.

His vitriol is so intense. I’m thinking this was a proxy murder. He was looking to obliterate somebody else, but he couldn’t, so he found a stand in for the job. I’ll bet he even thinks he was doing a favor to his victims’ kids. Disgusting. Moo.

I'm thinking this isn't arrogance and that he's had some type of psychological deterioration. Who knows?
I hope they lock him up and throw away the key, but it always makes me sad to see young people with promise completely lose their way.
He may have suffered a mental break, but the relative sophistication of his crime suggests he knew what he was doing the whole time. I’m surprised they charged him with 2nd degree murder, not 1st degree. His little outburst upon exiting the police car? I have to wonder how performative that was… as if he may be intentionally trying to appear “crazy.”

Hope you are right but I think his defence will not be about his actions that day but about the healthcare system in general and it might succeed in swaying some jurors with bad personal family experiences
His attorney will definitely consider that during voir dire!

  • #684
If that is the case he should have used his genius mind to get into politics/lobbying, not cold blooded murder of a father of 2
Definitely! He’s not one of the good guys.

Yeah, I don't get the 2nd degree murder charge either, unless they are just doing that preliminarily and plan to upgrade the charges.

Altoona police, citizens, receive threats after Luigi Mangione's arrest

By Ronny Reyes
Altoona Police and residents received threats following the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“We have received some threats against our officers and building here,” Altoona Police Department Deputy Chief Derek Swope told reporters Tuesday.

“We’ve started investigating some threats against some citizens in our community. We’re taking all those threats seriously and doing all the follow-up we can with those,” Swope added.

The deputy chief declined to say if any of the employees at the local McDonald’s where Mangione was spotted received any threats.

Many on social media have hailed Mangione as a hero for killing Thompson, a father-of-two, and for his views condemning health insurance companies.

He looks really thin; needs a few quarter pounders and large fries.

What has really surprised me (watching this from the other side of the world) is pharmacists and nurses also participating in the debate and telling of the number of people they have witnessed to have had their lives wrecked by health insurance companies. I was expecting there would be testimonies from patients/people with insurance, but not from staff in the professions in the health field.
A lot of people who go into healthcare still go into it because they care - lifelong nights and long hours, easier ways to make money. It must be horrific that you have to change care for a fellow human being according to a cold piece of paper. So lucky in the UK. Yes it isn’t free but actually UK pays less than most other European countries per head/GDP, and nobody is denied life saving care or bankrupt because of the healthcare (ongoing employment a different matter!)

It will be an interesting voir dire, for sure!

Defense atty: Please raise your juror number if you or anyone close to you has ever been frustrated with a health insurance company.

Edit for grammar

Pretty much every single person

If any juror was or had a loved one abused by the healthcare system/insurance, then yes, I agree with you. I fear many have.
Potential jurors will most certainly be asked that. Doesn't mean that some may withhold that info though.

Luigi Mangione silently walked out of courthouse after wild entrance

By Christopher Scarglato

Accused UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione silently walked out of a Pennsylvania courthouse on Tuesday afternoon.

Mangione, who allegedly gunned down Brian Thompson last week, was denied bail while appearing at the Blair County Courthouse.

The alleged assassin's exit was far more calm than his entrance — with Mangione screaming as cops attempted to control him.

Defense attorney says he was hired to represent shooting suspect

From CNN's Elise Hammond

Defense attorney Tom Dickey said Tuesday he has been retained to represent Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione, who is fighting extradition to New York where he faces several charges, including murder, is in custody in Pennsylvania after a judge denied bail earlier today. He also faces charges related to a gun and fake ID police found when they arrested him in the state on Monday.

“We’re going to fight this along the rules and with the constitutional protections that my client has,” Dickey said of the fight against extradition.

When asked if Mangione’s family retained him, Dickey said, “I’m not going to get into that.”

Dickey’s office is located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to its website. That is where Mangione was arrested on Monday.

Luigi Mangione had lived in adult-dorm 'co-living' space in Hawaii

By ecranenyp

Luigi Mangione had spent a brief stint living in an adult dorm-like space -- dubbed "Surfbreak" -- in Hawaii in the years before his arrest.

The shared penthouse space in Honolulu was initially set up as long-term housing for grad students but slowly morphed into a "co-living" space for travelers and remote workers, according to its website.

Residents undergo background checks before moving in and are all expected to contribute to the community.

Mangione lived there from January to June 2022.

Luigi Mangione started book club featuring Ted Kaczynski's manifesto

By ecranenyp

Luigi Mangione helped start a book club while living at the Surfbreak co-living space in Hawaii -- with Unabomber Ted Kaczynski's manifesto featured on the reading list.

Mangione's book club co-founders, R.J. Martin and Jackie Wexler, told CivilBeat that they initially suggested the rambling missive as a "joke."

It ended up being so "painful to read" that it led to the club folding, they said.

Mangione, meanwhile, reviewed it on his Goodreads account.

I'm curious about bias in jury selection. If such a significant portion of the public has had bad experiences with health insurance, can they really eliminate all such potential jurors? Would excluding them go against selecting a broad spectrum of the population? I know nothing of this, but it seems like it could be a sticky wicket.

So he might have checked into the hostel because he liked communal living...in addition to paying cash and using a fake ID and despite not interacting much with others.

Regarding the comment about how long LM was in McDonald’s and hiding in plain sight….had his bus already departed? I assumed it was a regular stop onto another destination. I wonder where he was headed next?
In an interview one of the McDonald's customers who saw him stated that he had been in the area for 2 or more days. So, if true, I'm guessing the bus was long gone.
