This is true. If their story was entirely fabricated it wasn’t put together with very much thought as it not only raises many questions but highlights their poor parenting as well. The children found to be missing from their beds in the morning is a far more common one, having the habit of waking up very early, oh panic set in, where did they go?

I think this is the most convincing part of their claim, IMO—the fact their story doesn't start earlier in the morning.
That said, maybe they slept in that day. (This is a pretty dark thought, I realize.)

My definition of couch surfing would be temporarily staying with a friend and sleeping on their couch because one feels they cannot be under the same roof as their s/o because of fighting.

IMO, I believe he did not sleep in the home on Thursday night because of the impression I got from their first statements to the media and DM’s subsequent statements about how fast he responded to look for the kids, and how far he said he went to find them immediately that morning. Why not take the ATV first (immediate proximity/woods,) and then the car (dirt roads and culverts) if it had allegedly only been 20 minutes since they noticed them not in the house/yard. Most importantly, for me, and IMO, if they were together under the same roof when the kids went missing, how does it make sense she could accuse him of “doing it”. By “it”, let’s say for argument sake, “it” means abduct Lilly and Jack? Because that’s what she called in and that’s what they insist happened because they lament police would not broadcast an Amber Alert for the two kids. It doesn’t make sense to me, to accuse someone of abduction who supposedly lived in the home, slept in the same bed as you and with whom you woke up the morning the kids went missing. IMO/MOO

I wondered about this as well. Their step-father stated they were off that day because Lilly had a cough, but that in and of itself doesn't mean they informed the school. If they didn't inform the school, it would be a safe assumption that the school bus stopped at their home that morning. No idea if it did or did not.

Unless of course, something like you stated in your edit took place.

This might not be a requirement absolutely everywhere but it is pretty standard. And if you don't do it in time, the school immediately calls you.
To expand on why this question has been pestering me:
It would be weird to call in and report an absence without seeing your child/children first, unless they were very sick the night previous.
If they were very sick the night previous, why are they running around ("playing outside?") before the parents are even out of bed?
I mean, the answer could easily be that truancy is the norm in this household. The absolute, inarguable conclusion is that the kids were either healthy enough to go, and no one could be bothered, or they were sick, and no one could be bothered to get up and tend to them.
It's not like anything can be derived from the answer to these questions. It's just bothersome, as a parent, to consider it.

Things really do not add up. If Lilly was genuinely not well enough for school I cannot see her wanting to go outside especially with a cough which might affect her breathing.
I can see Jack not wanting to travel on the bus alone ,but one of the adults could have driven him to school.
Neither adult being up to check them and to see if Lilly was feeling better or needed cough medicine/Calpol if she still was poorly.

Eta Daniel has stated a lot of things he did that morning including running ahead of all the drones and helicopters, screaming as loud as he could, running waste deep in water. He seems to have accomplished a lot in not very much time, yet didn't even see Jack the entire day.

Could just be family members, school staff, mum's community members, 35 isn't that many really. Doesn't mean there's 35 potential suspects, they could be 35 interviews for evidence gathering. It will be interesting to see what comes of these though.

A house gathering would go a way to explain why the parents might have still been dozing in bed at 10am though. I can imagine a scenario where they were hungover, kids are making a racket and told to go play outside for a bit. All moo.

I am sure if one of them went missing it would focus your mind.

I’d be able to find what my kids wore through process of elimination. I’d hyperfocus on it as it’s valuable information when searching for signs of them. My daughter in particular has tons of clothes, but when looking through her favorites first, I’d be able to narrow down what she was wearing. I find it so so so odd the mom and stepdad can’t describe the clothing
