I’m not sure what Abby says but it’s obvious that by the time video starts, they are very scared and alarmed. This makes me think he crossed that bridge very fast to catch up to them and that he might have already had his gun out or they recognized the outline of one in his pocket. Add to that how quickly they start down the hill.
I have no doubt that is RA and no doubt that is RA’s voice.
I watched it and it was very upsetting. You watch and you want to save them.
I cried because I couldn’t save them and it’s very real now.

for the 43 second video. I listened several times, jotted it down, and then went to go back and compare to what was said at trial/in family interviews

:07s: Abby: "Is he right here?" (this is also what Sheriff Liggett testified he heard)
:12s: Abby (just as the camera moves away from her as Libby takes some steps): "Don't leave me up here!" I know Liggett and Abby's grandma both thought they heard this as well.
:17s: Libby in what seems to be a forced casual tone: "See, this is the path.." DROPS VOICE and quietly says what does sound like "that/there be a gun" as Abby walk/runs quickly past her saying something about "path" before Libby resumes her casual talk about the path

Is that ungrammatical? Yes. Doesn't mean that it isn't something a girl her age would have said in a moment of panic or that we are mishearing the "be" part. But she definitely says something about gun when she drops her voice--but I can't tell if she is making a statement or trying to ask Abby for confirmation

Then we have "Guys", followed by Abby's tiny "Hi.", and then immediately I swear I hear a metallic racking that sounds tinnier than the crunch of the leaves/gravel before he says "Down the hill."

The people on FB and other places who claim the girls are laughing and having a nice calm time....

I hear no laughing, mostly sniffing from Libby that could be from the chilly temp (45ish degrees) or nerves. I hear Abby's voice tighten as she becomes scared. I hear Libby trying to speak in that calm "out loud voice" that we women get when we are trying to act like everything is normal, don't notice us, please keep going along and leave us alone. Abby's tiny "hi" is the worst part of it all IMHO. She sounds so scared, cornered, trying to shrink into herself and not be noticed...and at that point it's too late. :(

@ 2 seconds she does say im almost certain of it " is he running?" then libby laughs.

@ 8 seconds abby says something but almsot impossible to decipher.

yeh im definitely hearing "that be a gun" at 12 seconds.

when he says "guys, down the hill" it might be rocks underfoot crunching.

I have always felt safe hiking with my husband (we are in our mid 30s), after seeing this video I'm not sure if he and I would have been able to react effectively in the moment. It's just not a situation that one expects.

Take mace with you whenever you go walking or hiking in a local park. You may or may not be able to use it but it’s worth having if you can use it.

If I see someone walking towards me, I am going to spray and then say sorry if they end up being harmless.

Aw man. I have not been on for a little while and just decided to pop in and see if there was anything happening. Only to see the video has been released. Was not expecting that tonight. Actually never thought we'd ever see it.

The girls sound brave, despite the fear they were experiencing.

Heartbreaking.

I do not hear fear or terror from Abigail Williams or Liberty German at all. Early on I remember the video being described as the stuff of nightmares. Was this correct? It does not sound the way I thought it would sound after the second hand information from the people that attended the trial.

What I hear is two teenage girls playfully discussing some creepy guy behind them. Abby is asking Libby if he is coming up from behind her. I think Liberty German was doing exactly what I thought she was doing, recording her timid friend crossing the bridge. Then since they have no idea what this person wants as he gets closer, Liberty German starts talking on the video as she records the ground as if she is trying to pretend to be doing something else as Abby gets across and then hurriedly runs past her like when someone is right at the end of something scary and jumps across the last few feet to make it across.

It is only then that this person finally approaches and tells the girls to go down the hill. I am assuming at that point was when he pulled the gun and at it was at this point that I think they realized it was serious and the video ends. This is when I think things probably changed dramatically, but I could not hear anything else from Abby or Libby other than the bridge guy telling them to go down the hill.

I do not think much of the conversation you hear beforehand has anything to do with thinking this person following them is going to pull a gun and kidnap them. I think they thought he was some strange guy and were trying to do their best to pretend to not notice him until right before he got close enough to them. Liberty German then realizes that phone she has in her pocket with Abby also has the person who abducted them recorded. Somehow, they were able to keep it from this bridge guy. This is really remarkable considering the circumstances and how I imagine they probably were feeling once they realized the seriousness of the situation.

I tried to see if I could recognize any more features or see if there is a closeup of Richard Allen, but unfortunately it looks like police had to enhance what they had just to get the closeup of what was later released to the public.

I think what makes the Delphi case so strange is that the person arrested and convicted does not do what you would normally expect. The killer throws the girls' clothes into the creek, but not Liberty German's cell phone after moving the bodies and placing sticks. Did the killer have a hearing problem?

The jury saw all the evidence we did not get to see and found Richard Allen guilty so they must believe it beyond a reasonable doubt.
Is there a set of normal expectations of murderers?

I wonder if she's saying "could that be a gun?"

There are conventions people expect because of fiction, from television, movies and books. Real life tends to be a lot more chaotic, messy and ham handed. It isn't a neatly tied up sequence told in forty two minutes plus ads, it's someone taking the time to plan a murder but using their loyalty card at Walmart. It's someone abducting two girls but everything beyond that point goes a bit sideways, because fantasy and reality are never in perfect alignment. A van drives past. A girl tries to run. A novice abductor panics and kills and the planned rape never happens. There's always something in reality that can't be planned for.

MOO

I like how you think. Reminds me of the quote "it is often better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission." Spray first and if wrong, ask for forgiveness. If you don't spray, and your instinct was right, you're done.

“Playfully” discussing some “creepy guy behind them?”

No. Having been a teenaged girl and having raised two teenaged girls, a daughter and a granddaughter, as well as having taught thousands of 13 and 14-year old girls, young teenaged girls in this circumstance are not going to find anything “playful” about it.

I hear confusion, voices tightening, some alarm setting in as they realize he’s catching up to them. Hence the nervous chit-chat about the path ending.

Then he’s telling them to go DTH.

IMO

Are you serious? Knowing that the girls were butchered shortly after, I watched the video and completely agree it's the stuff of nightmares. In fact, I was ready to doze off but decided to log in for a bit, and saw it and wish I hadn't. I won't sleep well tonight.

I do not know how I would act at that age if someone pulled a gun and told me to go down the hill. Maybe I need to listen to the video more closely. It just reminds me of when I was younger and you see some strange person that creeps you out. They sound like what I would expect two junior high teenage girls to sound like.

I think Abby and Libby were concerned, but it sounds like they were thinking this person was strange.

I do not understand why this video was not released earlier. What this video adds is context to the situation. Before I saw this video I thought Abby and Libby were completely in fear of bridge guy following them and the conversation was with bridge guy when he approached them right behind Abby. It now looks like Abby was able to make it completely across before bridge guy did (my opinion).

It almost sounds like Libby is telling Abby that the trail ends here and not bridge guy. It is only my opinion that I do not hear the same things as other people in terms of the context of the video and audio recording.

These children look terrified to me.
They are not at a McDonald’s playground, they are totally isolated with no one around and they knew that.
The way they are trying to mask their fear is devastating knowing that about a half hour later they would be dead.

I hear straight up fear, cloaked in stoic bravery, especially from Libby trying to stay calm for her frightened friend.

Agree. That is what bravado looks like in girls.

Oh that little "hi" is simply devastating.
