GUILTY Abby & Libby - The Delphi Murders - Richard Allen Arrested - #220

I do not believe the movements of LG’s cell phone ever showed them going down any other nearby trails. They did not venture off the beaten path from Mears to MHB or the defense would have pounced all over that. BB is likely not walking at a leisurely pace since she is exercising & not taking in the sights. No one else saw RA near Freedom Bridge at any other point on that day other than when he had arrived & we know other people were coming & going that day. No one saw RA on the trails again after ~2:00 - 2:15. No one on this planet has gotten RA off that bridge.

RA’s defense team could not present any additional evidence which corroborated what he claimed he did behind his initial times which were in the tip sheet. Therein lies their problem. They say, but they have no evidence to prove what they say. 12 people agreed it was beyond reasonable doubt that RA was there when the girls were & followed them across the bridge & ended their lives, based on the evidence the prosecution presented.

Transcripts are due in early July, barring further delays. The second juror who came forward claimed if people weren’t in the courtroom, they weren’t seeing the whole picture nor the evidence presented against RA.

Random question:

Can someone please refresh my memory of the detail of the secretary/clerk or whomever who found the initial statement from RA that he was on the trials at the time? This was the statement that did not somehow get in the tip database.

This ended up being the PIVOTAL point in the investigation and being found was the only reason this case was ever solved.

Kudos to that person! Would like to hear all the details of this hero.

The black Ford Focus driving towards the old CPS building at 1:27pm is probably the biggest piece of evidence showing that Richard Allen was arriving and not leaving. It confirms the timeline. About the only way I could see Richard Allen possibly being innocent is based on a different slightly altered version of the timeline.

First, lets describe the timeline the way it probably happened. I know others will say it definitely happened this way, but I am putting forth what is only a possibility.

Scenario 1 (most likely based on the evidence)

RIchard Allen drives past the Hoosier Harvest store surveillance camera at 1:27pm. He arrives 1:28pm at old CPS building. He gets out of his car and walks down the trail first passing the 3 girls at the entrance. BB is seen driving past the Hoosier Harvest store surveillance camera at 1:46pm. She arrives back at the Mears parking entrance at 1:47pm. Right at around 1:47pm Richard Allen walks by the Mears parking entrance as BB is gathering her things to get out of the car and continue her walk on the 501 trail. From the Mears parking entrance it takes 5 minutes to walk to the start of the Monon High Bridge. When Richard Allen passes the Mears parking area he may have even glimpsed the car Abby and Libby arrived in. Richard Allen walks out onto platform 1. BB sees him on platform 1 shortly after about 1:53 pm. Then she walks back down the trails towards the Mears parking entrance and about halfway sees Abby and Libby. Since she is exercising and walking continuously, she sees Abby and Libby around 1:55pm. Then assuming Abby and Libby keep walking they arrive at the start of the Monon High Bridge around 1:57pm. I am assuming Abby and Libby walk slow in this scenario since KG's car is seen driving away at 1:49 pm per the Hoosier Harvest Store video.

Scenario 2 (possibility)

Everything is the same except when Abby and Libby arrive they do not go down the 501 trail first. BB comes back from seeing Richard Allen on platform 1, gets back to the Mears parking area and begins walking down the 505 trail. Richard Allen leaves platform 1 not long after BB and sits on the bench at the 505 trail overlooking the creek while BB is walking down the 505. She sees Abby and Libby near the halfway point of the 505. Abby and Libby get back to the Mears parking area and begin their walk to the Monon High Bridge at around 2pm. They arrive at around 2:05pm. Before Abby and Libby get back to the Mears parking area from walking on the 505, Richard Allen gets up from the bench and walks back to his car and leaves. BB's SUV he probably does still remember sitting in the parking lot.

If Richard Allen's car was seen on any surveillance tape around town it would have to be from between 2:10 - 2:30pm in this scenario. This is why I thought it was important to try to verify when Richard Allen left the Monon High Bridge trail area that day. I know the timing is very tight in this scenario 2 timeline, but I wondered about it because of Richard Allen's statement about seeing an SUV in the Mears parking lot while sitting on the bench when he got up to leave.

Scenario 1 is not a scenario in my opinion.
It is what happened based on evidence.

In RA’s 2017 interview with LE, he states he was at the trail between “13:30-15:30”.
That would be 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

This is how I understand the interview file was found.
The initial interview was found by Kathy Shank, retired from county service who volunteered early on to organize and keep the tips and files.
In 2022, it had been decided to once again go through everything in hopes of finding something that may have been missed. In doing that, KS located the interview in the back of a drawer of files marked “cleared”. She glanced at it and, having been around since the beginning and knowing what was deemed important by investigators she noted that RA stated he saw three teenage girls on the trail. KS knew the teen girls said they had seen a man dressed like BG on the trail and that LE had never found that guy. KS checked the digital database of interviews and discovered RA’s had been misfiled under the last name “Whiteman” which was actually the name of the street RA lived on. She then took the found interview to investigators.
She is a hero. KS was offered the $300,000+ reward and she declined it.
That’s pretty much what I know and how I understand it happened.

OMG! What a great story. She is a hero. She actually LOOKED in a folder marked cleared but also saw the significance of the 3 girl reference.

Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing that information.

Here is an interview with her. Kathy Shank

Where BB passed the girls is at the bend between Mears and the bridge. The bend is where where the eyeshot opens up from the trail and extends straight down the trail and down the bridge because the trail is old railroad tracks.
There is no chance he did not see or pass the girls.
I agree that scenario 1 is the most likely scenario, but the problem is the timing by witness BB.

According to Hoosier Harvest Store surveillance camera, BB's SUV passes the camera at 1:46 pm on her way back to the Mears parking area from her bathroom break at the local library. She arrives at 1:47pm. Let's give her a minute to gather her things and get out of the car. She is there to exercise so my assumption is she is continuously moving and walking. It takes 5 minutes to walk from the Mears parking area to the start of the Monon High Bridge. She arrives at Monon High Bridge and sees Richard Allen on platform 1 about 1:53pm. KG's car is seen driving away from the Mears parking area at 1:49pm by the Hoosier Harvest Store surveillance camera. This means Abby and Libby were probably dropped off shortly after BB began her walk to the Monon High Bridge at about 1:48pm. In my opinion, I think BB probably saw Abby and Libby closer to the start of the Monon High Bridge, but who can guess how fast or slow Abby and Libby were walking.

According to BB, after she sees Richard Allen at 1:53pm, she goes back down the 501 trail and on the way back to the Mears parking area about halfway walking back passes Abby and Libby. This would put her sighting of Abby and Libby at about 1:55pm. Abby and Libby arrive at the start of the Monon High Bridge at around 1:57-1:58pm. They walked slow. The picture of Abigail Williams at platform 3 looking back to the start of the bridge with no one in the background is at about 2:07pm. There is an earlier picture about 2:05pm of the entire length of the bridge looking towards the southeast end of the bridge.

Where was Richard Allen during those 10 minutes? Where was Abigail Williams and Liberty German during those 10 minutes?

It seems like there can be 4 possibilities:

1. Abby and Libby arrive at the start of the Monon High Bridge around 1:57pm. They sit and stare at Richard Allen for the next 5 minutes on platform 1. He eventually gets tired of them staring at him and gets off the Monon High Bridge to walk back. This delays Abby and Libby getting on the bridge.

2. Richard Allen gets off the Monon High Bridge platform 1 shortly after he is seen by BB, and starts walking back towards the Mears parking lot. He passes Abby and Libby on the 501 trail, but for whatever reason decides to just stop in his tracks and think about what to do next for 10 minutes so this is why he is not seen in the 2:07pm picture of Abigail Williams.

3. Abby and Libby do not care that Richard Allen is on platform 1 when they arrive at the Monon High Bridge. They start to walk across the Monon High Bridge while he is on platform 1 looking at the fish below. Abby and Libby pass him on the Monon High Bridge before Liberty German takes the 2:05pm photo of the entire length of the bridge once they are beyond platform 1 where Richard Allen is standing. But this does not make sense because no one is in the 2:07pm photo of Abigail Williams which is a photo taken back towards the start of the bridge. Would he really get off the bridge at that point since the girls are already beyond him and moving away only to get off the bridge to come back later?

4. Abby and Libby do not arrive at the start of the Monon High Bridge until around 2:05pm because they do not start walking to the Monon High Bridge until 2pm, but if BB is continuously moving she should have started her walk down the 505 trail where the overlook bench is located at around 1:58pm when she gets back to the Mears parking area. The timing is tight for Richard Allen to have sat on the bench shortly after BB's starts her walk down the 505 trail and Abby and Libby start their walk to the start of the Monon High Bridge. This might explain the missing 10 minutes.

None of this takes into consideration the over 60 confessions, unspent toolmark analysis matching Richard Allen's gun, or the white van confession that only the killer would know. But this is why I think it is important to verify when Richard Allen left the Monon High Bridge trails that day. If his original confession is correct, I think his car should have been spotted on some surveillance camera around town driving after 3:30pm. I think that would be the easiest way to verify his story instead of trying to guess how fast or slow people walk on the Monon High Bridge trails.

There is only one living human being on the face of the earth who can answer your question and that is Richard Allen, and he’s not talking.
Which one of RA’s confessions indicates he drove through town? I don’t remember that. If his car was not seen driving through town, the best explanation is he didn’t drive through town on the way home.
Witness testimony indicates he was still at the crime scene a 3:30pm since he was not seen muddy and bloody on 300 N until just before 4pm.
This is my scenario:
BB sees RA on the bridge about the same time Libby and Abby were dropped off. BB walks back up the trail and RA follows her thinking she might be his target.
RA passes Libby and Abby on the trail and changes his mind. Now they are his potential targets. RA lingers just around the bend of the trail, watching the girls as they very slowly cross the bridge while still being able to see down the trail if anyone is headed his way. I don’t know how long it took but when RA decided it was clear he took off after the girls, trapped them, took them, and killed them.
The timeline is tight and supported by witness testimony and evidence. In my opinion, the ten minutes doesn’t change anything.
My not caring about your ten minute question, I’m sure doesn’t help any. Sorry about that.

If the defense could put RA anywhere but the bridge at 3:30, they would have.

If the prosecution had images of RA's car at 3:30, they would have had to provide that to the defense.

RA was not forthcoming about his route out of the park.

Possibly the camera didn't record him. It happens. Glitchy. Had just recorded a different car and was resetting. Or RA knew an offroad way to get home. Being seen by SC might have shook him. So he took to paths and backways.

IMO going into town? Nonstarter. He had blood all over his clothes. Hurrying home to clean up before KA started asking questions.

I definitely agree the timeline is tight. Another possibility is that once KG's car is seen leaving at 1:49pm after dropping Abby and Libby off, it took Abby and Libby 15 minutes to walk to the start of the Monon High Bridge from the Mears parking lot area. This would be consistent with their pace if BB sees them halfway down the 501 trail on her way back to walking to the Mears parking area. That could be the answer.

We will never know what other pictures or video they took from between 1:49pm and 2:05pm, the time around when the picture of the entire length of the bridge was taken once they got on the Monon High Bridge. I agree my question about the timing will probably always be left unanswered.

Given that Abby had never walked on the bridge before, part of that "extra" time between them leaving the lot and starting to cross the bridge could have been Abby getting cold feet as the reality of what she was going to do (cross a rather scary bridge with no side rails high above moving water hit her and her slowing down/or even stopping, and then Libby having to coax her/reassure her/cajole her to go ahead to the bridge.

I think that given how serious it seems BB is about her exercise walking, it would be reasonable to assume that after she came back from her trip to the bathroom, she spent a little bit of time doing some stretches to re-warm up her leg muscles before assuming a her normal pace.

MOO After BB passed the girls and walked on down toward FB he simply passed the girls or they passed him and he hung back out of sight till they got closer to the other end.

Not just scary but explicitly forbidden.

The reason I do not think BB stopped to do anything like stretching is because it requires her to not be moving since I think she would do the stretches in the Mears parking area. The scenario below explains it. Abby and Libby had to arrive only a minute or two after BB according to the Hoosier Harvest store surveillance video of when BB and KG's vehicles arrived and left the Mears parking area. From some video I saw the average person it takes about 5 minutes to walk from the Mears parking area to the start of the Monon High Bridge.

If we were to use pacing to describe the timing and we assume that BB did indeed see Abby and Libby on the 501 trail halfway between Mears parking lot and the Monon High Bridge after she saw Richard Allen on platform 1, this would mean first that it takes Abby and Libby 15-16 minutes to walk from the Mears parking lot to the start of the Monon High Bridge if they start at around 1:48pm. BB starts a minute before Abby and Libby at 1:47pm. It would mean it takes BB about a third of that time or about 10 minutes to walk from the Mears parking lot to the Monon High Bridge and back to the Mears parking area based on where she says she passed Abby and Libby (halfway) on the 501 trail which would be around 1:54 or 1:55 pm. BB gets back to the Mears parking area to walk down the 505 trail at about 1:57pm and Abby and Libby arrive at the start of the Monon High Bridge around 2:03pm based on their 15 minute pace.

These are rounded figures so if my math is wrong someone can correct me on the timing.

RA likely either followed BB at first or was waiting to see if she would return prior to the girls getting far enough across the bridge that she might see him. It’s possible that’s why he was standing on platform 1 beforehand, timing BB’s appearances & noting how close to MHB she was getting. Her trip to the restroom may have thrown his timing off hence why he left the platform. He wasn’t going to prematurely frighten his prey & begin stalking them before they were half way across. He needed them to be closer to the SE end in order to pull out the gun & hurry them off the far end so as to not potentially be seen by anyone coming from the NW end of MHB.

I’d guess BB was walking the fastest, the girls likely the slowest, distracted by their phone, as many teens are, stopping to read texts, look at pictures, etc. RA’s pace would probably be stop & go because he needs BB to not be seeing his movements. Maybe he did sit on the bench to wait for BB to get further away, take a few drinks of his beer while working up his courage & possibly waiting for the girls to let their guard down if they passed one another. He couldn’t rush his approach back onto the bridge - it would have looked odd to be following the girls as quickly as he appeared to do in the released cellphone video & likely out them on alert much sooner than he wanted/planned. He wasn’t wasting time approaching them once he got back on the bridge, if he ever left it.

FWIW, being that RA got two life sentences and is going nowhere, it's important to realize that his confessions are his testimony if you will.

He corroborates other witness testimony. In a way he could not if he was there at a different time. That is why his confessions convict him.

What he doesn't confess much to is the part no one can corroborate because he murdered both of those witnesses. We will likely never know how terrified they were (we can undine the terror), what they said, if able, whether they tried to escape or couldn't (imo that Abby was redressed and had the phone suggests to me they were trying to convince him to let her go, Libby falling by the tree suggests to me she tried to escape him) but he has secrets and they are ugly. 18 minutes with a man like that is forever.

But he corroborates the juveniles, corroborates the first platform, corroborates why there's no man in the 2:05/2:07 photo (he says he got behind them/followed them). He corroborates BW. He didn't see anyone who came before 1:30 or anyone who came after 2:15. He corroborates BG, essentially admitting it's him, dressed as he was. Indirectly admits seeing Abby and Libby in "knowing" Abby and Libby didn't have a phone out in front of them, filming him (how wrong he was). He corroborated the elevation change on Libby's phone.

Later he volunteered information -- he thought they were older (he knew they were younger), he didn't rape them (he curved then to undress at gunpoint (which is a violent SA and we don't know what else he may have done or that was washed away), he admitted they didn't die right away, he watched to make sure they didn't suffer (no, he watched them WHILE they suffered -- sick, sick, sick).

One thing is certain-- that evil little man is finally off the bridge, in prison where he belongs. Hell can have him next.

In the meantime, Abby and Libby can have their bridge back, where it should remain a place of adventure, laughter and life. A snapshot of how they lived their lives!

He can continue just living his life - in prison, until he dies, alone. His new jailhouse spouse likely won’t tolerate his pathetic gaslighting & feel sorry for me BS. He’ll be miserable without that codependency.
