Mike Patty speaks first. No prepared speech, off the cuff. Thanking jurors for justice for the girls. He will always be grateful for their careful consideration. Gratueful for the community who has held them up during these years. To LE for nearly 8 years of hard work. To Judge Gull, thank you for her steadfast efforts and staying on track so this is possible.

At the press conference, Mike Patty speaks first and expresses appreciation that justice has been served. He thanks the jurors for remaining openminded and objective and delivering a verdict. Thanks the community for their support. Thanks the investigative team and prosecution for continuing to work towards the verdict. And to the judge for her steadfastness and how she stayed on course.

Tony Liggett speaks next and mentions how Carroll County is tight-knit. He believes that the verdict and sentencing will help relieve fear in the community. He says people who live here are resilient. He thanks the community and families for their patience. He says there will, however, never be closure in this case, though a form of justice was served. He calls RA a "lowlife coward." He apologizes to the families that it took 8 years to get to this point. "The reason justice was served today is due to one person....a person who only knows how to give." He's referring to Kathy Shank.

Doug Carter had prepared remarks but decided not to read them. He will speak off the cuff today. He mentions how he and others have been mocked for their emotion and inability to answer questions. He's not going to apologize for those things. He wishes we all could have heard the victim impact statements, as he is never going to forget them. There have been many investigative strategies over the years. Any notion of a coverup or police misconduct is not correct. Carter has never been a detective, but he listened to their strategy decisions and supported every one that they made. They "lived by the gag order, but the defense did not. And it cost a life." Anyone who shares the photographs should be held accountable. If you ever see them, just picture your own children. He will never forgive the leak of these photos into the public sphere. Every time the defense "created a public narrative," he wishes he could respond. But he had too much respect for the gag order. In all his years in law enforcement, Carter never really considered what the jury was going through. But now he knows about how juries can see things that LE cannot see. The people that mattered were the 12 jurors in this case. He praises the efforts of Jerry Holeman over the last 8 years. He ends by speaking to the community and suggests that they stop the conspiracy theories and begin to heal.

Nick McCleland invites everyone to take a sigh of relief that this part of the trial is over. He thanks investigators and his team of prosecutors. "No one will understand the heart and effort they poured into this." He also thanks Kathy Shank "the grandmother of our office." Without her, they would not have an arrest, conviction, or sentence. He also thanks the families for their support and for not responding to allegations that were put out there, for the betterment of the case. He also thanks Libby and Abby themselves. He says explicitly that Abby hid the phone so the killer couldn't take it with him.

Tony Liggett speaks to the type of community Carol County is. Resilient. Thanks all for their patience during investigation. On closure, there will never be closure in this case. daughters, siblings and granddaughters were lost. a form of justice has been served but it will not give the girls back to those people. The girls didn't deserve this. no closure simply turning the page and starting new chapter. Apologizes to family that it took eight years.

Dou Carter: we lived by the gag order. defense did not. Documents released by the defense - dammit I wish I could have responded but I couldn't

Impact statements - I wish you all could have heard them, will never forget them.

Only people that mattered in that court room was the jury. They could see what the public didn't.

Doug Carter now saying how they have been mocked and ostracized for having emotions and not always having answers. Thanking team for self-sacrifice and courage. Any notion of coverup not correct. He’s never been a detective but represented some of the best. His job was to support them and decisions and he stands by them. Gag order - they lived by it. Defense did not. And it cost a human life. Anyone who shares the photographs should be held accountable. If you ever see the photos, stop and picture your own children. He will never, ever forgive that. “Dammit, I wish I could have responded” but he respected the gag order. Baldwin and Rozzi are responsible for the leak, not his team.

Can anyone explain to us laypeople why the DT doesn’t want him to confess? Isn’t it the defendant’s right to plead guilty, admit guilt or testify and the defense teams responsibility to respect his wishes? I’ve wondered this the entire trial…

It seems to me the D has let it be known it’s only about winning instead of allowing truth and justice to prevail.

As public defenders I suppose that can be the end result because I really doubt if RA and his family would’ve funded such a ridiculous defence if the money was coming out of their own pockets.

Nick McCleland is taking questions:

It's hard to put yourself in the shoes of the family. He asked them not to read allegations on the internet. He urged them not to violate the gag order and "keep their eye on the ball."

Did he fight with Jennifer Auger at the end of sentencing? "No, she was commenting on things said in the sentencing, I'll keep those to myself."

RA has 30 days to file notice that he will appeal. If he doesn't file, there's no appeal. If he files, they will respond accordingly.

He feels confident in the verdict and the sentence.

Were other actors involved? Not at this point, there is no evidence to support it. If evidence comes in the future, they'll investigate. The amended charges were to add charges that were more appropriate at the time.

He wanted vindication to show that "the people standing behind me" were not corrupt and that a clean investigation was conducted.

Are all the other men cleared in the case? He asks for clarification on who "the other men" are. He says there is no evidence to tie them to the offense at this time.

Will they continue looking into the Anthony Shots profile? Answer: he was convicted. There is no information that he is connected as of now.

The timing of the sentencing was just to get it in before the holidays and it worked in everyone's schedule. I think the question is referring to trying to get the sentence in before the holidays to bring peace to the families. He says nothing will bring peace on any day, but hopefully there is relief that this part is over.

His opinion is that if the Indiana Code allows for prosecution for people sharing the crime scene photos, he will pursue it.

Did he see RA rolling eyes at the judge?
It was hard for him to see RA during the trial. When he tries cases, he doesn't get sucked into the reactions of other people other than the jury. However, he did notice a lack or remorse, regret, and emotion when images of the victims were put on the screen. As a father, Nick was emotional so the lack of those things in RA's demeanor struck him.

What piece of evidence "did it" for the jury? He thinks it was a culmination of everything they had, stacking up. If you can accept that he is BG, then you can accept he is the killer.

If RA truly wants to apologize to the families and admit what he has done, now is the time.

He believes that the community is safer now that they can rest assured they got the guy. He was born and raised here in Carroll County and for 3-4 generations of his family and he has always thought it was safe here. But there can be pressure off of people knowing that RA will be in prison.

Press conference concluded.
