VERDICT WATCH Abby & Libby - The Delphi Murders - Richard Allen Arrested - #214

Question: February 13th, 2017 was a Monday. Was there a reason the girls were not in school?

The reason I recall was school districts allow schools to be closed a certain number of days due to snow and that year there was one left over. So it was closed although wasn’t actually a snow day. This one day closure was publicly announced in advance. JMO

Now we know that the sticks were just covering them and that could be undoing or literally just trying to cover them to hid them and delay anyone finding them.

The redressing I really am wondering if he had some period of time there that he didn't know what to do. It sounds like this did not go as he had planned for it to. I'm sure what he imagined leading up to this crime was one version and then when he was actually in the moment committing the crime, things didn't go according to plan. Going through the water means now they are wet and cold. Abby's clothing being down by the water might have meant she couldn't get to them so he just said put on these.. or she might have been shivering. I do wonder if he let her redress as another form of control. Be quiet and I won't hurt you. Put these clothes on to try to help calm her or something. That may not be part of his plan at all.

So while I can understand LE saying these were signatures and they are, they literally may not have been part of what he actually intended to do when he set out that day. IF he committed another murder would he need to do this same thing with sticks and redressing to fulfill something he needed? I don't know.

Wonder whose phones those were and did they see anything?

The Defense intended to use that data spuriously, as evidenced by their motions, to turn witnesses into perpetrators.

The biggest hole in the phone tower dump IMO is the absence of RA's phone. Of course some will say that's conformation he wasn't there, but or only shows that his phone wasn't.. And why would that be? Especially when he himself claimed to have been on his phone? That would have been the easiest way to exculpate him -- if it existed, if it were accurate, if it put him there magically from noon to 1:30 and sonewhere else after. It doesn't. It likely says his phone wasnt there at all, at any of the times.

Which the Defense didn't want to elicit under oath because the State would be all over that. Plenty of hood reasons murderers leave their phones behind.

And the State didn't need to make the point. IIRC the Defense did, in their opening statement, that there was no digital evidence tying him to the crime scene (also brought out on either Defense cross or Defense direct). The jury can connect that dot. His phone wasn't there. What that says or doesn't say, they can weigh.

Beyond that, there's just not much help from the tower dump.

From 1 until 4, there just weren't that many phones there and eventually they were all accounted for.

By 4, you've got park-goers that are in no way connected to anything, nearby neighbors who live there and so do their phones, and early searchers, bringing in theirs.

Fluke of flukes, in RA's favor for committing a crime in broad daylight and against two terrified little girls who had nowhere to turn, there was no one around at 2:14. Absolute echo chamber.

We can't know whether there was screaming or not. RA says there was. There well could have been. RL was gone, at the fish store iirc. The W family was away. BW was driving home from work. BB had just gotten in her car and left. Old guy with the camera maybe hadn't arrived yet, FSG might have been inside, doing his exterminator job, and the later walkers hasn't yet arrived.

If a child screams in a forest, and no one hears it, does it make a sound? Only three people were DTH. He says he heard screams so maybe he did. The girls can't tell us.

It just remains how absolutely dreadful it had to be, that for a sliver in time, at 2:14 until about 2:28 there was no one around who could stop this. Just RA unfettered. And he wasn't stopping for nobody.

Whatever happened, unless RA chooses to tell more someday, only the trees know.

Frankly, I'm okay if RA is forever haunted by what he did, in his ears, before his eyes. Indeed, does a good person kill two little girls?

No.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I hope the Jury do see that for what it is.
I take it LE checked the vast array of RA's phones found at his house?
Was there any evidence of differing network providers or anonymous use?

Jurors. Bored? Nothing to Do?
If deliberations go past today I hope they've got some board games and films lined up for them for Sunday and Monday. I think it was the Chad Daybell trial where one of the sequestered jurors said they got all their clothes out of their case and ironed them because they had nothing to do.
@Tortoise
I can just see this---
After returning to hotel, if all the jurors take clothes out of their suitcases & pull irons & ironing boards out of the closets, and press on high temp setting (say, 204°C / 400 °F) at the same time?

Flips all the hotel's elec. BREAKERS? Fire alarms ring & flash?

Just kidding, but in the midst of deliberations, it's a smooth segue to a bit of lightheartedness. Do a search w this ---> wiki extreme ironing. Fun pix & entry re "the latest dangerous sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt."

Srsly in the case, jurors have a very TOUGH JOB. I don't envy them and appreciate the posters saying regardless of the verdict, they will respect the outcome.

Hello, brand new to Websleuths but I've been following this case from the beginning. Is there a place where I can find a clock/ticker showing how many hours the jury has deliberated so far and if they have left for the day. Not just for today but going into next week. Thank you!

His conversation with his mother is what stays with me.

JA: "... You don't have it in you to do something like that."

RA: "Mom, I wouldn't say I did it if I didn't."

His wife & mother are just in deep denial. He tried over and over again to tell them and they seemingly just didn't want to hear it/believe it.

Jury dismissed for the day, anyone else coming around to the fact that we are looking at a hung jury?
All MOO, but I honestly think maybe they are just exhausted, or maybe had a crummy lunch that doesn’t agree with them, or some other kinda benign reason (like someone has a migraine headache, etc)

If it’s just that the jury is deadlocked, I feel like they’d be instructed to continue working to arrive at agreement (JG is a stickler for rules). I think they may just need more rest than anticipated.

Yes and because he is so dependent on needing their love he then stops confessing. It’s like he was emotionally blackmailed by the people who claim to love him as they know he is completely dependent on their approval and love so they took that away so he would behave.
