I think LE pieced it together from interviews with various neighbours.Yes, I'm aware of this fact...but for me that doesn't answer the question of 'how' LE would know he was interrupted by one of those other people, other than to have a record of the fact. From whence does that record come? A witness? A phone? Evidence on the bridge side of the creek?
The clothing in the creek and on the bank was on the edge of the W's property. They were out of town but their adult son was interviewed. [probably as an initial possible suspect?]
He said he drove to his parent's empty home on the afternoon of the 13th. They have a long gravel driveway along the creek. SO I think RA might have heard that car from a ways away?
Gave him time to scramble across the creek up into the brush, leaving som clothing items behind at the bank of the creek. That car was a possible interruption initially. Then he gets them into that tucked away clearing, and possibly resumed his attempt? But soon he likely heard people calling the girl's names from the bridge area. That might have been the final interruption. IMO
Gave him just enough time to throw some branches and leaves on the remains and scurry off like a rat.
