Abby & Libby - The Delphi Murders - Richard Allen Arrested - #207

Caught up at last on thread, after almost 3 hrs solid reading.

( Followed the case closely since the girls went missing, but don’t post much. I’m cautious in what I write on a public forum)

Bear with me please, these thoughts that have been developing over a period of time but I’ve not seen raised/answered on the thread ( though I may have missed things)

1) Because the defence didn’t request a formal evaluation of mental competency prior to trial, does this leave open the path to appeal a guilty verdict on grounds of ‘ineffective assistance of counsel’?

Could this have been a deliberate move by the defence?

2) I have long thought RA may have had deep troubling feelings of inadequacy ( possibly linked to short stature) & felt emasculated by strong female family members.
Perhaps he experienced ambivalent/confusing feelings toward his close family members, at times hating & blaming them for his perceived inadequacies.
Perhaps he harboured fantasies of killing them ( all MOO) but substituted the two young girls to “save his family”?

3) Linked to the above, I wonder if RA experienced sexual dysfunction, adding to his feelings of inadequacy/frustration & indeed to violent rage if he intended to rape but was unable to do so physically.

With a history of depression, suicidal at times, possible medication ( antidepressants?) & alcoholism, I’d suggest he might well have experienced sexual dysfunction.

Sorry a long post from a retired medical practitioner. All MOO

Makes sense to me.
All of the different pictures of him that I have seen not one shows him looking to have confidence in himself.

Regarding number 1 I think I finally put together what the defense is going for: RA is a sane, normal person who became temporarily psychotic during the time he was in custody just like any other sane, normal person would have. I think that’s why they didn’t have him evaluated and yet still say he was not being rational at that time.

Regarding 2 we’ve so far seen him show protective instincts toward KA; he didn’t seem to take a submissive role with her. Idk of course.

All JMO.

It’s still puzzling to me that he got some sort of legal mail on April 3, his lawyers clearly state it wasn’t discovery, and on that same day he seemingly confessed to his wife over the prison phone. She hangs up on him. He spends the next few days spiraling as his defense attorneys come visit him, take photos of him looking unwell, and a singular attempt is made to move him which the state actually didn’t object to. Guards state he’s only acting crazy when he realizes people are watching, and it gets worse when his lawyers are present.

Today’s testimony will be interesting for sure.

Could it have maybe had to do with the length of time he would have to remain in custody? Maybe he thought he was almost done until then? Just speculation.

Those are not ‘confessions’….mere thoughts of a mentally ill man. Sounds like he’s goading…. Telling the world what they want to hear and trying to make it his truth

I don’t believe anyone can accept those as a true confession

The Defense disagrees that RA is mentally ill.

Richard Allen is sitting in court as a sane man per his attorneys.

I’m curious of what else a true confession from a deviant murderer of two young girls would sound like?

Ra is expressing himself clearly to me. He is referring to the girls by name over and over.

Ra says he's sorry, he will burn in hell, all appropriate thoughts to follow his admitting many times he did indeed kill Abby and Libby.

He had some of his hissy fittin’ and weird turn of phase I would expect like I wouldn’t cheat on a cigarette meaning he wouldn’t cheat on his wife or something. Rambling is all. He had nothing better to do.

Who would expect ordered private thoughts from such a person anyway?

It may not raise to the level of insane but he’s abnormal obviously.

The ongoing infantilization of RA is curious.

all imo

Maybe, but the defense was basically claiming he seemed well until April 3 in their motion. There wouldn’t have been much of a communication regarding time in detention as far as I know. They weren’t anywhere near trial yet, and he should have been fully aware of that.

Could it have to do with a legal document that had nothing to do with his lawyers/trial? Perhaps a legal document realting to/coming from his wife as he did then reach out to her to confess.

I do think that it was a MASSIVE mistake not to get the height of BG analyzed. ESPECIALLY when they arrested and charged a 5’4” man for this. They went to trial knowing they had no DNA, no murder weapon, no conclusive witness ID-not sure why they were hoping that simply him saying he was there during the time of the crime would be enough. If they could confirm the height of BG to be 5’4 to 5’5 that would go a long way (for me at least) for removing doubt RA is the guy.

I’m not who you asked, but it’s not unheard of.
Allen was one of 22 people housed pre-trial with the Indiana Department of Correction.

Delphi murders suspect Richard Allen moved to different prison
Were they all kept under the same conditions as RA was?

One I found was the accused (now convicted) killer of Laura Mitchell. He was transferred to Miami Correctional for safe keeping. He was on oxygen and suffered a head injury while in jail. I have no info on his housing conditions. We have followed his case here on WS.

I thought this was a good but brief 1/2 hr summary of yesterday’s trial, day 10. Interesting the contrast mentioned of how RA appeared in the video interviews from 2022. He was far heavier, full beard, dressed all in black compared to how different he looks today sitting in the courtroom. It’s also mentioned when he was arrested he was placed in handcuffs which the D didn’t want the jury to see, reason why the end of the vid was not shown to the jurors.

Divorce papers?
Not necessarily. We know that he seems to be affected by any impact on KA ... and she did have to sell the house at some point (I don't recall when that happened) so something like that possibly. I just find it curious that he received legal paperwork, contacted her first, confessed, then she contacted his lawyers.

I did notice a tweet flying by on the height topic but I can’t recall who was testifying at the time, does anyone remember? Whatever it was the jury did hear it. IIRC something about the height could only be determined to within a 2 inch variance.

I would think that it would be hard to analyze someone's height accurately if they are moving in a slouchy manner while wearing a hat and a hoodie and constantly have their head down as seen in the released photo and by witness statements.

They are confessions and the fact he was out on the bridge at the time In question dressed as the killer and his gun cartridge under the bodies.

He is guilty it’s as simple as that and I am not seeing anything that makes me believe otherwise.

I believe what they testified to in court was that it would cost $10k and the height would have a margin of error of 2 inches. So if it came back as 5’6”, it could actually be 5’4” to 5’8”, which isn’t exactly more helpful than witness descriptions.

I'm chiming in late as I have not been following the trial threads, but I was puzzled by the snippet I heard about this testimony.

Long before the arrests I remember reading that Bridge Guy was estimated to be well on the shorter side of average, around 5'6", give or take. Were those estimates from the true crime community rather than from official sources?

I don't remember anything from high school trigonometry but mathematically it doesn't seem that hard to come up with a general range. Was LE that worried about boxing themselves in to an estimate?

Edited to add: I see this was partially addressed by some responsive posts that crossed with mine, thanks.

“They didn’t see me around the girls,” Allen said. “I don’t care how stressed out I get. I’m not going to admit to something I didn’t do. … You don’t have anything that implicates me, because I wasn’t out there.”

“You conscience is telling you, this is the day,” Holeman said, as the interview escalated.

Have we seen anywhere where RA says, just plainly, "I didn't do it". Just straight up denial rather than "I am going to admit I did it" or "they didn't see me around the girls" or "if it's a picture on the the girls phone, it can't be me"?

Allen has been listed as 5 feet 4 inches tall by his defense attorneys and 5 feet 5 inches tall in jail records.

Given the description of Libby’s video, just a very small image on a couple of video frames, possibly the issue of accurate estimation relates to camera distortion and movement of the subject.
