BingoI noticed this with the Jayme Closs case. Folks get too attached to their own pet theories and reality turns out to be simpler and less interesting as they'd imagined. They refused to believe a random stranger committed the murders and went as far as smearing Jayme as being involved.
This case had a lot of years, a lot of interest, and a lot of theories on suspects. In the end, it seems the simplest explanation makes the most sense: a drunk pervert did it and got lucky for five years.
