In my opinion I think I might have figured out why the jury convicted Richard Allen. It has to do with the timeline Richard Allen gave of being at the Monon High Bridge trail from 12 - 1:30pm. The information I got is from the Carroll County Comet article dated October 25, 2024. The title is DNA and digital evidence has yet to link Allen to murders of Caroll County teens.
On the day of the murders Richard Allen said he left his mother's house in the Mexico, Indiana area at around 11 to 11:15pm. Then he went back home and got bundled up to go to the Monon High Bridge around 12 pm.
The problem is Richard Allen's confession to Dr. Wala. In it he gave another important detail(besides the van), that he stopped and got a six pack(of beer?). He told Dr. Wala he drank 3 before going to the trail and 3 later after he got back from the trail. It takes about 35-40 minutes to drive from Mexico, Indiana back to Delphi. That would put Richard Allen at home around noon or 15 - 20 minutes before noon.
How did Richard Allen have time to drink the 3 beers? He didn't if you are to believe the story that he was on the trails from 12 - 1:30pm. Drinking the 3 beers first makes it much more likely he was arriving to the trails at around 1:30pm, not leaving. Also, the article states that police were able to uniquely identify the 2016 Ford Focus on the Hoosier Harvest Store surveillance camera due to the racing spoke wheels. Until I read this information it did not make sense why the jury believed the state's timeline.
I still think Richard Allen deserves a new trial because this is not the way police and prosecution should be getting confessions. Also, this information only puts him on the trails between 1:30 - 3:30pm which everyone already suspected due to the confession regarding the van. I think the minor detail about drinking the 3 beers first made his credibility suspect regarding the timeline. In my opinion, the jury convicted him because of it.
